If you use wpad.dat and auto detect proxy settings you don't need anything other than a web hosted file that can be accessed onsite, but can't be accessed offsite.
-
If you're going into this fresh, now, offsite infrastructure via Intune is probably the correct answer. Not something that I've done, but probably the end goal. I did it in 2021 as an evolution rather than revolution. I set up Always On VPN, changed our proxy settings to wpad, and went from there. I was pretty chuffed with the project. It meant having a dedicated AoVPN host, using our existing NPS, and going through a couple of the excellent guides online to make it work. I think your Head is on the right track, personally - it can be a real boost to productivity (with the caveat of working from home being optional still!) Be prepared to help users with their home firewalls (many ISPs like Sky have DNS settings which block VPNs).

Wet cambelts are a bad idea. Look after it this time!

They're great cars, at least without an early 1.0 Ecoboost. Unless you know exactly what you're doing or what's causing it, don't ignore warning lights in future (I have done so, but with knowledge of why they were on and how to fix it).

Is there anywhere to view the keys added to a KMS Host?
3s-gtech replied to WestyTech's topic in Licensing Questions
Yes, using VAMT. -
I don’t want to incite anything litigious, but we had copiers that our cousins in the USA use as a generic trademark. They were atrocious, and this week, six months after getting rid, I’m finding that the bloody drivers have somehow come back from the dead and gone berserk (hundreds of instances, app notification popups etc). Windows Update most likely trigger. Hateful rubbish. Awful support. Rude call centres. Broken supplies ordering. Good techs, but getting them out was tough, and the copiers broke all the time. I could make a better photocopier using my scrap box. Or from something dead.

2T Engine help please? Overwintering and getting out of storage...
3s-gtech replied to AB_IT's topic in General Chat
You don’t need to take out the plug - you can just kick it over without the leads on to get some oil through. Otherwise, check the tyres and brakes, and ride it. -
No. Generally, it does nothing.

1 litre 3 cylinder EcoBoost engine? Problems with these mainly affected earlier cars, but do not ignore the EML on an EcoBoom!
-
The EML is a generic diagnostics light. It basically means ‘a system controlled by the ECU is out of parameter’ or words to that effect. That can be anything from a failing sensor to a more critical issue with a system. The only way to know what’s wrong is to get it plugged into a diagnostic scanner, via the OBD port. You can buy one and do this yourself, but if you’re not mechanically minded or don’t have tools, get a garage to do so. Don’t keep going - the warning may be minor but it could indicate a more serious issue.

It's an irritating workaround, but my experience with DP has been really variable. I have a couple of suites of new PCs where I had to use a few HDMI instead and DP would not work at all. Random. Have you tried using HDMI? May need converters from the GPU.
-
Wooah, I didn’t know it worked with Salamander. This could save me a hell of a lot of work. It’s included in the suite too!

I doubt it’d void anything to bang an old HDD in there https://infoserve.lexmark.com/ids/ifc/ids_topic.aspx?root=v54781690&topic=v50548483&productCode=Lexmark_C4342&loc=en_SG I’d remove any partitions first as who knows how it’ll manage existing ones.

[ms office - o365] Microsoft Publisher - EOL 2026
3s-gtech replied to thimon's topic in Office Software
I’ve stuck with it for our leavers yearbook. I tried with InDesign, but the learning curve wasn’t worth it for a yearly application, and the end result was plenty good enough anyway. Our Prospectus uses it too, but in parts that really needs freshening up! -

Wouldn’t it be interesting/unprecedented/useful if they open-sourced it? -
Smoothwall Recommendations
3s-gtech replied to Techlee77's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Running two Smoothwalls here - the hardware (Dell R410) eventually failed after many years of use (iDRAC failed, irritating but not terminal) so I transferred the software to replacement servers, with the help of their support. The product is good, I get on well with it and I find the support decent. -
Move KMS from 2012R2 Server to 2022 Server
3s-gtech replied to hipsterdoofus's topic in Windows Server 2022
Yes - if you just want to test deactivating/decommissiong the server, drop the DNS entry only for now. -

Move KMS from 2012R2 Server to 2022 Server
3s-gtech replied to hipsterdoofus's topic in Windows Server 2022
Yes, it may affect the activation of the host itself. You essentially install KMS into the existing service. I think there’s an slmgr command to pull it back out again, but not something I have done. Bear with me. -

sppsvc or Software Protection Service. -
I’m doing another suite this week, from 2010 era HPs to 10th gen Core. We won’t be close to replacing everything by next October, but there is LTSC at a push and maybe extended support? Wonder if I can get 11 running on HP DC 7800s (mighty Core 2 E6600!) [emoji28]

Windows Lite or mini version with TTS function
3s-gtech replied to dariuszpindela's topic in Windows 10
Bump up the RAM, SSD in there and stick full fat Windows 10 on - it’s fine with 4GB unless you’re multitasking. -
Having SQL Server running on a Hyper-V host is a really bad idea. It vacuums up RAM - deliberately, for performance reasons. That will fight your HV role. You can limit memory allocation to SQL Server, but really you should not run anything else on the bare metal.
