  1. Hi, We have a problem with SIMS.net on Vista and Windows 7 Laptops where the error missing or incorrect s:\sims\connect.ini is sometimes shown. In the XP era this always meant the network wasn't connected either by wire or wireless and was easy to fix. It is equally easy to fix on vista\7 by going into my computer and seeing that s:\ has a cross through it, double clicking it reconnects the drive and makes sims work again. (missing network is still also a possibility). This happens a lot and there must be a way to prevent it. Is there a group policy or reg change to prevent this network disconnecting procedure in the newer OS's? Thanks,
  2. Hi all, Our SIMS server is running on a virtual server - Server 2003 standard R2 x86. (It was converted from a physical server). I have given it all the resources the OS supports i.e 4 cpu cores and 4Gb RAM. We currently have a problem where CPU usage hits 100% on all cores and causes speed issues with SIMS because it's busy, especially around the time of year they do profiles and assman. I can confirm that the activity is caused by SQL(SIMS) and not anything untoward. I want to improve performance of the SIMS server. The virtual host has lots of spare resources (While the virtual SIMS server sits at 100% on all virtual cores only 5% real cpu is used on the host.) Ideally I would like to create a new 2008 R2 server image and migrate SIMS over but I had a look and there are loads of SIMS integrated software that make this a bit tricky. So.. I know I can't upgrade 2003 x86 to 2008 R2 x64, but can I upgrade to x86 2003 enterprise to allow the use of more RAM and CPU cores? If I do will I have to repair SQL 2008\SIMS etc or should it all just work? Thanks,
  3. I've just noticed this too with the same setup. Has anyone managed to add a list of allowed MACs to IAS? I'm not sure how. I found the option in Ruckus L2/MAC Access Control but this is limited to 128 entries. I've seen the option to add MAC control to DHCP, but I'm sure this would be a bigger headache because then I would have to add all the MACs from every computer and device and there are a lot...
  4. I've got a similar problem with XP PCs, I've set a group policy preferences power scheme for XP and I can see it has been applied by looking at the registry (HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\PowerCfg and HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]). On some machines it works without problem (screensaver, monitor off, hibernate). On the others they always show the logon message box, the screensaver doesn't start and no power management kicks in. I've compared the registry keys between a PC that works as expected and one that doesn't and both are the same. I can see the logon message flicker after 5 mins as though it tried to start the screensaver but failed. All PCs are based on the same image, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with not working as expected after a user logs in. Has anyone had the same problem and fixed it?
  5. Sorry, more questions ... How does the licensing work? Is it per connection? Do I need a external connector license if it's available on the Internet? What does citrix give me over 2008 r2? Does load balancing on r2 only work by round robin? Or can it be set based on CPU/memory usage?
  6. Hi, I am after some advice on the best way to setup a thin client setup. Is it just get licenses, setup 2008 remote desktop on several servers. Setup broker, install software, buy client hardware? What are the best clients to use? I just want to use it for office and the Internet. I suspect the biggest performance eater will be flash games:D. I'm thinking of 40 or so simultaneous clients. I would also like to offer the connection to be available via ruckus guest network and externally via the web site as a remote access solution. Thanks in advance...
  7. Thanks for the reply but the keyboard profile is already on the macs. It's added by the bootcamp drivers and available in the keyboard layout settings. The problem is in the profiles, I can't see how I can specify a profile to be used when using the macs and another for normal computers as there is only one setting in the user properties. I could remove the user profile path and use the local default profile on each computer, but this would cause other problems e.g office setup wizard, program config options etc that are solved by using the mandatory profiles. Changing the keyboards is looking like the easiest option at the moment.
  8. Hi, We setup a dualboot Mac suite over the summer with OSX and Win7, All working OK except the keyboard special keys when running windows. Students have mandatory profiles which are setup on a network share. This works great on most of the Windows 7 Computers, but the iMac's have a strange keyboard layout and this confuses teachers because they press a \ and get # etc Is there a group policy setting, reg key or batch script that I can setup so when users are on the apple computers it uses the Apple Keyboard layout setting? I did consider changing the profile but this would mess up the standard keyboard computers or changing the keyboards, but there has to be a way to do it. Thanks,
  9. I think I've fixed it. It was to do with the autoconfig settings in DHCP. I removed the WPAD DNS setting from DNS when I removed smoothwall, but forgot about the 252 DHCP Option I created. Thanks for your suggestions.
  10. I've tried removing the virus scan, disabling ipv6 and removing bonjour but still have the problem. Is it only me with this problem? Perhaps some extra info might help.... We previously used smooth wall as an Internet proxy and didn't have this problem (but several others :-) ) we have now moved back to the SEGfl RM safety net system, because it was too expensive to continue with smooth wall. Could this change be the cause of the problem? It has to be proxy related because the triangle is on all vista, 2008 and 7 computers.
  11. Thanks, should have done a search first Does anyone know why the button is disabled? Do Microsoft use their own software? Why make something harder than it was before?
  12. Resurrecting this old thread because I also have the same problem on some Dell latitude 2100 laptops. Wireless status would also be helpful. Are there any new suggestions for software or am I better off allowing the task tray?
  13. Hi, I have windows 7 setup to use mandatory profiles for students which run off a network share. It works OK but isn't as easy to manage as xp was e.g. I have installed Photoshop elements and premiere elements and want the acceptance agreement that shows each time a user uses it to go away. In xp I would set the load the program and setup the desktop as wanted then copy the profile to the share and make it mandatory. I can't do this in 7 because the copy button is now disabled. I tried making a profile using sysprep but ended up breaking a machine trying. I fixed a similar problem with office using a showoptin key. Does anyone know the regkey for pse and pre that stop the acceptance agreement? Or is there a better way to achieve what I'm after? Thanks
  14. I do agree, It's not as good as backup exec. but it is only the 3rd version not the 13th. I've had all sorts of issues I didn't have with BE12.5 - It needed loads of patches before it would even backup a server. This interface is confusing it took me ages to find the log files - I'm still not entirely sure where they are - where is \\?\Volume{d76456fb-b756-11df-bbde-0019bsfsfd95ey6}\D2765F51-2511-41687-A7F1-44224AFC9742\FailedFilesLog.txt ? on the backup disk? A backup fails if more than 100 files can't be accessed - caused by it's hate of cookies It got confused by files compressed on a SIS volume - BE had no problem with this. The big advantage is the cost, not sure what else yet.

    Exchange 2007 SP3

Since the SP3 update we now have a problem with direct file access using the documents feature of OWA. When files are accessed via this method a blank page is displayed. Does anyone else have this problem? A Google search led me to You Had Me At EHLO... : Exchange 2007 SP3 and OWA S/MIME Version Mismatch comments, where others have the same problem. Looks like I'll have to wait for a patch.
  16. Hi, I've setup Data Protection Manger 2010 for our Backups, since Backup Exec was becoming expensive to maintain. Most Servers backup OK but a few always have problems with the cookies folder in the user profile. - This normally just results in a warning. but.. There is an server with redirected profiles on it, (More cookies than Cookie Monster could eat) so DPM reaches the 100 failed files limit and "the replica is inconsistent" error. An error line from the failedfileslog.txt is: 0x80070005 \\?\Volume{d1d45b15-30e3-11df-8924-00137267215c}\Profiles\Admin\Cookies\admin@hitbox[11].txt I know I could add these as exceptions but that's a lot of work. I don't understand why it can backup all other parts of a profile, but gets stuck on small txt files. Is there an easy fix? Mmmm, all that talk of cookies has made me hungry
  17. Hi all, A bit of a non problem but I would like to get it sorted so as not to confuse teachers. In Windows 7 and Vista computers the network icon in the taskbar has a yellow exclamation and says 'no internet access' when I hover over it. The computer does have internet access though, and internet explorer and all web apps work as expected. I think this is a recent problem as I don't remember seeing the yellow triangle last term. I've tried running connection troubleshooter and it says there is no problem. It might be Mcafee enterprise as I recently updated it to 8.7i rollup3, I'm going to try uninstalling it on a test PC tomorrow to see if it fixes the icon. Does anyone have any other ideas?
  18. So if I need to generalize can I use an answer file like below to /PersistAllDeviceInstalls and make the oobe phase quicker. - I don't intend to use this image on any other type of computer. 1 true true
  19. So - based on a quick search.. I install KMS on a server using slmgr /ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx with a volume key that does servers and clients - The KMS can only have one key. Then Windows 7 clients will sort activation out themselves and XP and Server 2003 are unaffected because they don't understand KMS?
  20. OK, I'll try without the unattend.xml file by just running sysprep from c:\windows\system32\sysprep. Does it cause any activation issues? Do I need to generalize if the hardware is the same?
  21. Hi, I'm trying to duplicate a new windows 7 Pro Laptop to 17 others to save some time. Here is the scenario: Have 18 Dell E5500 Laptops with Windows 7 Pro Have customised one - went though oobe then installed required software, removed junk etc Now i want to duplicate it to the other 17 laptops - I want to use WDS to capture the image, then multicast it, as I have done with XP previously. With Xp I was able to copy the c:\sysprep folder from a factory fresh laptop using winpe (before it went through the oobe), then reapply it after I had made the changes to it. Capture - then use on other laptops. I tried the same process in W7 but the sysprep folder is no longer in the root of the drive. I've found an unattend.xml file in c:\windows\panther folder, but sysprep says the answer file contains one or more elements which have already been processed. The unattend also doesn't have any key in it unlike the xp version. Am I trying to achieve the impossible? Is the only way to install all the software manually 17 times? Thanks,

    Exchange 2007 SP3

Hi, I successfully upgraded, but with a few issues along the way. E2K7SP3EN64.exe is a self extractor. - No problem there I stopped backup exec service and mcafee groupshield from services.msc - to stop them interfering I then ran the setup, as others have done (ignoring the switch) It did a readiness check and failed because a restart was pending. So I rebooted the server, stopped the services again then re-ran setup This time I got an error 'dllhost' () process (ID 3692) has open files at the readiness check. This stumped me a bit because I had already stopped the third party services. Anyway, I managed to find the process 3692 by adding the PID column to task manager processes (view, select column, tick PID). It turned out to be GSH - mcafee groupshield. This confused me because I had already stopped the groupshield service, I double checked and it was definitely stopped. So I searched on google and found there is a COM+ service. I had to get to it from Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Component Services, COM+ Applications. Select GSH User Junk Folder Router then right click and choose shutdown. Then I ran setup again and this time it was happy. It did the schema update itself as part of the process, although it took 40 minutes to complete the upgrade, of which 17 mins were the schema change step. I rebooted the server again afterwards to reset the services. No wonder it wasn't a Windows update. :-)

    Exchange 2007 SP3

Hi there, I've just looked at our exchange server and it's running 2007 SP1 on 2008 Svr. I've noticed that the current version is SP3. So I've downloaded SP3..... It says on the release notes that SP3 includes all SP2 so I only need to do one upgrade, but it also mentions a schema update and uninstalling interim updates. I found out from a google search that I have no interm updates only rollups. Now, I have a file downloaded E2K7SP3EN64.exe Is the process?: run E2K7SP3EN64.exe /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions then rerun normally and follow the prompts. or is E2K7SP3EN64.exe just a self extractor? then I have to run extractedfolder\setup.exe /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions or is it OK just to run the file and let it do the schema update as one of the steps? - I don't remember exchange 2003 SPs release notes being this vague:doh:
  24. Hi, Quick question: If I put an iSCSI storage box in one building, can I access it from another building using dedicated iSCSI switches connected via SFP\GBIC fiber modules? or would this have to be done with fiber channel? or NAS? The idea being to distance the disk based server backups from the server room. Thanks,
  25. Hi, I'm planning on implementing Windows 7 with offline files on some teaching staff replacement laptops this summer. I know how to setup up the group policy etc. but I would like it so that the offline files are encrpted. I can see the policy for this but have a few questions: If I encrypt the files what happens if there is a problem - is there a domain decrypt certificate I need to create? If the files are encrypted, I assume they can't be accessed via bartpe, winpe boot discs? I know in XP this feature required admin rights. Is this still the case in 7. If so this is a non-starter, Teachers with admin rights ehhh! Is there a microsoft guide to how to do this on a domain? I've only found one for doing it standalone. Thanks,
