Did you manage to fix the menu? When I migrated the template the menu still worked but it lost the animations.

I agree getting another range would be easier, as would removing the proxy, but trying to do so through East Sussex Technical and the South East Grid is proving difficult. They are really slow. It took them a month to do the firewall changes necessary for the lightspeed box.

Thanks for the posts. I agree smoothwall could do this, but it was too expensive, which is why we ended up with lightspeed. I'm still hoping that the proxy can be removed to save me all this extra work. Maybe smoothwall express could be used. I looked at ISA\TMG but I'm a bit anti now Microsoft has discontinued them. pfsense looks interesting I'd rather have a switch hardware type device than a server because of power and heat problems where the internet comes into the building. I have a little experience with switch config via telnet, but would still much rather have a nice web GUI. Any more suggestions?

Update: I can't get a range added to the gateway device, so I will need an intermediate L3 device to NAT the VLAN IP ranges. Any suggestions for something easy to configure and maintain? Most of the switches here are 3com or HP. Would be great if such a device could also provide DHCP and DNS for the guest VLAN and rules to prevent the guests accessing the main school network, with a nice web gui. I'm not getting anywhere either asking for the crappy RM upstream proxy to be removed. I'm don't mind keeping the proxy setting for the devices we control so I don't have to re-configure, but I don't want to have this added complexity for guest devices. Can a NAT device hide the proxy? so the guest devices can use port 80, or is this an extra service, or device that's needed to do this?

Thanks for the replies, I can't change the gateway switch because it belongs to the internet provider, but I'll ask them if they could add another private range... I looked at the Ruckus settings. I found how to isolate the clients which is good, and I've already created a L3/4/IP address Access Control list but I couldn't get it to work. What rules would be needed to only allow internet access and nothing else? I also want guest devices to use their own DHCP, and DNS.

Hi, I am thinking about how to set up a secure guest VLAN with it's own DHCP scope and DNS etc to keep it separate from the main network. We currently have everything on VLAN 1. Switches are mainly 3com or HP with a pair of 3com 5500s at the core. We have ruckus for wireless I have managed to create a VLAN to test it out and these are the problems I've had so far: Internet doesn't work because the ip range is different to the RBC assigned range - do I need to use NAT somehow or reserve some IPs from the main range Proxy setting guest devices: ideally I want all guest devices to use port 80 and not need to enter proxy settings for max compatibility. I'm looking into removing the proxy altogether and using lightspeed as the filter. I'm trying to find a system that is simple to configure and maintain. Do I need a NAT hardware router, that can also do guest DHCP and DNS? Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks,

Hi all, Since coming back there now seems to be a weird problem with office 2007 apps (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher and Access) Users can open Word documents from network drives, or create a new document, when they press the save button(after successfuly browsing their h:) the dialog box greys and an a (Not responding) message appears on the title. The computer is still usable for other things and if they leave the computer alone, the document is eventually (After 5 mins or more) saved. Not ideal when they all come to save at the end of a lesson. It is only office that is affected, any other program saves without delay. It must of been something that changed over the summer that caused it, but I'm not sure what. File servers are the same (Running 2008 R2), sofware and image are the same... I had a very similar problem when I was setting up a new Windows 7 suite, but this was resolved by setting the Web Client service to automatic. The computers that are affected already have this service automatic and running, and are XP OS. Staff, and administrators do not have this save problem using the same machine that would cause a student a problem. I'm currenty thinking it could be: Network traffic related, but I have no way of measuring how the network is performing, I installed wireshark but its all gibberish to me. Our switches are mainly 3com 4400s Printer related - No printers have changed, but I've seen office do stupid things if it's waiting for a printer to respond. DFS related - Our file shares use DFS Windows Update related Has anyone else had this, and solved it, or can suggest anything else to try?

Hi, I am trying to migrate from 1.5 to 2.5 at the moment. I used SPUpdate to transfer over the content because I kept getting undefined errors with jupgrade. I've followed the guide posted by 3s-gtech above (thanks for that) and the axe template works, but there are a few glitches in the css that I'm not sure how to fix. The main difference is the vertical menu which loses the spacing, lines, and sub section indenting; but on the positive side still works. Rokslideshow had to go, but I've managed to replace it with showplus which offers a similar slideshow component. Akeeba backup and xampp have been really useful for this project. I even managed to get the usb version of xampp to work, so the old 1.5 site and the new 2.5 site can run, and be developed directly from my portable USB hard drive from different computers.

bump - This is still a problem. I've tried setting special permissions 'files only' but this doesn't work. it does if I give standard modify to a teachers group but I don't want to do this for the reasons above.

OK, another related question. I have some new Dell Laptops here to set up for staff. I have learnt about 'audit mode' and how I might be able to use it. Would this work?: Turn on Dell Laptop, Press Shift, Ctrl, F3 at OOBE setup screen Add office software etc and remove dell crap. Re-activate sysprep using Dell's unattend.xml - not sure how to do this though 'sysprep /oobe'??? does it use the panther unattend.xml file? Clone to other laptops Then all laptops will load, I can name, make local account etc and all our software will be there, after it finishes.

Hi, I need to clone a Windows 7 computer to other same model\hardware computers. With XP computers we can set up an image, clone with imagex to a wim file. Then deploy to other computers and use newsid to rename, then join the domain. = Simple and quick. I have yet to succeed in finding a similar quick method for Windows7. All the documentation I can find is for creating an image that will work on any hardware. - I know it's strange, but I don't want this, all our images are hardware\model specific because we buy machines in batches for specific departments. So each one has different department specific software and drivers installed. I know sysprep is the answer, but I can't seem to find the right combination of options that does what I want. Can anyone help me save some time with a sysprep script file that keeps the drivers and shuts-down so I can clone it to a wim? I then don't want it to take ages optimising settings and rebuilding the driver database, create a new user etc on first image boot. At most I want it to ask me what name it should have, maybe domain join and nothing more. Is this possible?

Hi all, I've been asked to give teachers write permission to student home directories. At the moment they have read-only access via a mapped users share. I don't want to give them standard modify rights, because this could allow them to drag student folders into one another, or be able to delete a student root folder, causing all sorts of issues. There are also several folders under each user e.g My Documents, Favourites etc that need to remain for the student to be able to logon. What special permission options would be needed to allow them to only modify child files, and is a cacls batch file still the best way to set them all up? Thanks for your assistance.

Hi all, I have been given some budget to increase the space allocated to staff and student home shares and a public share. I would like to have two servers and load balance\replicate between them so If one server has the problem the other will continue to work over. I'm aware DFS could do this, but it's not really designed for it, and is a bad idea. Does anyone else already do this, and can suggest a solution? I want to spend most of the budget on hardware so ideally wants to be something that is included in windows or is low cost to add. SAN hardware etc would be too expensive. Thanks,

Just to confirm we are using the windows connection and not a third party tool. Although I have seen that the intel client can do a pre login connection but this looked really complex to set up. The delay and ad check-in increase are the suggestions I'm trying at the moment

I have had this with gamemaker 7 and 8 running under student accounts. It produces the error "Error #5: You tried to run this software twice, or you do not have full permissions. in this case contact your administrator", then it goes "Softwrap file error 4" then it goes "Error: Inconsistent Files" Our solution to the problem was to delete a file and folder on each XP Computer delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\global.sw2 delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\softwrap (folder inc sub folders) then let gamemaker re-create them itself by running as a student not an admin.

Hi, We have been using student XP Laptops and trolleys for years, and one of the biggest problems with them is the message '<> not available' when a student or staff member logs on. The same message you would get on a standard domain computer if the network cable was unplugged and there was no cached profile. To fix this we have to plug the laptop into the network with a cable then run gpupdate from a local admin account, then reboot leaving the cable connected until it displays the logon box. This is needed often. It looks as though when using a wireless only connection, XP doesn't fully connect to the network before it displays the logon box, and over time the computer account goes stale and the laptop is unable to authenticate with the domain. We have tried to use HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\EAPOL\Parameters\General\Global\authmode to use only computer authentication but this didn't resolve the problem. All the messages in event log just say unable to contact domain controller or similar network not available messages. Does anyone else have this problem? or has managed to overcome it? Thanks,

Hi All, I have an original RM One PC in to fix. It has developed a fault where it has an intermittent flashing blue power light (around the power button), and won't turn on. Has anyone else come across this before? I suspect it could be the power supply, but it is horrible to get at. I'm just deciding if it's worth the time, effort and money to fix. RM want £55 to collect it and then just look at it, or £175 to come on-site then + labour and parts. Thanks,

I have just gone through our software share, tiding up old versions of acrobat reader, flash, promethean etc This got me thinking, is there a freeware program that could create a menu listing for all the software installers in alphabetical lists. Like CD Autorun menus used to be - where an item was greyed out if it was already installed. Filtering the list by location or type of computer would be useful. Does such a thing exist? I did a quick google search which found several possibilities, but I thought you guys could save me some time if you already have one up and working. Thanks,

Hi all, We have a few systems here that operate by paper at the moment and we would like to digitise them. It would be really useful to know what software others are using at your school for the following scenarios: Science Technician - Equipment booking. They have asked for a system to allow the science teachers to book equipment for lessons in advance. I've tried using outlook\calendars but this is too open, it needs to be teacher proof - i.e lesson period selection, no double booking, stopping them from booking resources without 24hrs notice etc. Print\Reprographics Room - We have a staffed print room here with several photocopiers. At the moment the teaching staff have to fill out a paper slip with details of copies, size, stapled etc which is paperclipped to the original. Then the admin staff do the job, and then manually calculate the job cost and then total it all up at the end of the month. I'm sure this could be done electronically. Departments often overspend their budget because of the delay in them being charged for photocopying. Lettings for sports clubs - This is partially digitised at the moment using a program called Ressched. The problem is the invoicing side of the program is poor, with no way of marking if someone has paid, finding outstanding balances, payment reminders etc There must be a program that does the whole job for a small cost. Building maintenance helpdesk - We use spiceworks for our IT support helpdesk and would like to set up something similar for the site staff. I have considered installing another spiceworks instance for this, unless anyone else has a better solution. Thanks for your assistance, much appreciated.

How do I find out which way the backup is set up? All I know about the backup is that there is a maintenance plan that runs a backup each night and tidies up the number of copies.

Hi, I think it's more about the CPU than the RAM but anyway... I've found the settings as per Suggested Max Memory Settings for SQL Server 2005/2008 - Glenn Berry's SQL Server Performance - SQLServerCentral.com It was set to 2147483647 Max server memory. I've set this to 3500 as suggested since the server can't see any more than 4Gb. So far not much difference, but thanks for the suggestion.

Hi, Our SIMS server is visualised (p2v) running on 2008 R2 HyperV Host Server. The host server has 32Gb RAM and dual processors with 16 cores available. The SIMS Server runs at 100% CPU most of the time which makes SIMS.net really sloooow. I've checked in the task manager and it is the SQL process (sqlservr.exe) that is the cause. Yet when I look at the host task manager it never goes over 2-3% cpu on any core. So the host processing power is not being passed to the guest. The guest already has the max 4 logical processors and being 2003 x86 std I can't give it more than 4Gb RAM. I've got to move SIMS over to a new 2008 x64 R2 server in the summer (which I hope would have better performance, being optimised for virtualization). Is there anything I can do to speed up this 2003 virtual machine in the meantime? Thanks,

[sims] S:\ disconnects after time or sleep on Vista\7 and stops SIMS.net loading
HCC replied to HCC's topic in MIS Systems
I have tried that before but then it thinks it needs to upgrade the client each time, even though it doesn't (something to do with s:\setups?)- 3 replies
