You know that problem that Vista and then 7 had when if you had both redirected folders and offline file sync enabled it could take forever to logon. That issue that they fixed in Vista, then in 7. Weeelllll, you'll never guess what Windows 8 does They really need to fire Faily McFailson from MS and fix their bugs propperly rather than embedding the same stupid faults in each new version so they have something to do.

Hi all I'm gonna to scream in a minute but i cant quite fathom whats occurin' with this one. Difficult to explain this one without giving some insight as to what we have setup so here we go: With our computer replacement scheme, and some long hours by me, we've got a Windows 7 deployment system setup, along with a DFS Storage Share where the win7 roaming profiles and redirected folders point to (which as far as i can see / tested / used, is working a treat). However, user naturally have to use shared documents on older storage systems - think the big old EMC Celera's type NAS systems - as this is a gradual process at the moment. We've discovered, quite annoyingly, that users are getting a very strange issue when they access files on shared documents of these other storage systems that arent the roaming profile store. For example, Word 2010 seems to create a .tmp file when the user uses a document from this shared area (permissions shouldnt be a problem as on this particular folder on this share, as 'Everyone' is set with Full Control), he's able to edit the document as normal, but when he saves it, it doesnt save it in the UNC path, although transparent to the user, it has, but it seems to have only saved it in the user's cache on his machine, and this .tmp file gets left in the UNC location. Seemingly, this is Windows automatically caching files that the user uses on the network, however, I dont recall asking windows to do this, so is this "by design" and is there a way to turn it off so that only the roaming profile / redirected folders does it, and not every file on a share that the user connects with? To note, I did try using the GPO setting "Prohibit 'Make Availabe Offline' for these files and folders" and removing the CSC etc etc, which after sorting out the users' profile, didnt seem to have the files re-cache, and I was hoping that this would help prevent it from happening but no dice unfortunately As the description of that GP setting shows, it seems very much a GUI / prevent users from manually choosing to do it etc. Cant seem to find any [obvious] setting to prevent windows from doing this.... just wondered if anyone has any ideas on this as this obviously is pretty rubbish and delaying me from finalising our new deployment of win7 etc, along with the few users that are piloting it at the moment. Many thanks for anyone that can help with this one or has ideas on it Nath.

I use the evil technology that is offline files on staff laptops. One of my users did some work offline over the summer and these files just flat out refuse to synchronise. Another user suffered a similar problem on Windows XP and I simply used CSCCMD 1.1 to extract the un-synchronised files and copied them. I'm guessing a similar fix woould work here but the CSCCMD tool doesn't work on Windows 7 (or Vista for that matter) so I'm a bit stuck. How do I extract these files from the offline files cache???

Mapped drives are set for our users by a script. For teaching staff it appears that two of those mapped drives are set to "always be available offline" but others (up to four for teaching users) are not. I thought this might be controlled by a Group Policy but can't see anywhere that individual mapped drives are controlled in such a way. Can anyone tell me where I can look, if there is a way to identify which GPOs might be responsible or how else they might be controlled like this? Thanks, Paul.

Hello, how can i download a page, like this:

https://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/exercises/tenses/past_perfect_mix.htm so it works fully offline (note that there are 2 buttons)

I am something of a newbie to servers, domains etc. However, i am in a jam with regarding to the teachers using their laptops at home. Servers are running 2008 and laptops are Windows 7. The laptops have roaming profiles and redirected folders. When the teachers are using at home, none of the shortcuts on the taskbar work and when clicking on Documents in the Start menu, nothing happens. However, if you click on your Username at the top of the start menu, it does take you to your My Documents. Any shortcuts pinned to the start menu also fail to be recognised. In fact, when clicking on any pinned shortcuts, Windows informs they are no longer available and would you like to remove? Bonkers. Could really do with some guidance on this. (Ever feel like you have bitten off more than you can chew?) Many thanks Steve

Hi, We've got Staff laptops which need offline files available for loading the desktop. Works fine when on the network, and when not connected to any network. However, when they connect to home wireless network, it still tries to synchronise with the server. Have looked at group policy admin>network>offline files settings, but can't seem to work out why it is still doing this. Any ideas? Incidentally, if I disable offline files, it just doesn't load any desktop when not connected, and comes up with a "server not available" error message.

Hi, I am setting up a few new staff laptops (well, netbooks actually) and the idea is to use offline files and cached credentials for offline/away from network use where the domain is unavailable. This works fine with regards to cached credentials, the machines are set to remember/cache the last 5 log ons, and offline files are enabled by GPO for the users redirected My Documents/My Music/My Pictures/App Data/Desktop folders. When logging in, the offline files are available and the users My Documents and mapped U: drive are all available offline, however it seems some of the offline files settings are not being set like they should be according to the GPO. In group policy I have the setting enabled so offline files sync at log off - this works fine. However I do not want them to sync at log on, so I've disabled that in GPO. I've also disabled end user configuration of offline files, and the offline files balloon tips in the system tray. However, offline files still sync when logging on, users can still configure offline files and balloon tips still appear in the system tray regarding offline files... so it seems the GPO isn't actually applying properly? Can anybody offer any advice with this as it's pretty irritating waiting for files to sync at log on. I want the experience to be as transparent to the user as possible. The offline files have been configured in a "basic settings" GPO for the netbooks and everything else in there applies fine and works well... except the offline files settings for some reason. I've tried setting them in computer settings, user settings, either or and both and yet the result is always the same... I just can't get my head around it  p.s. using Windows Server 2003 and XP Pro SP3 clients.

Hi I need a little help and advice. We have some networked fizzbooks for our students (Primary School). I want the children to be able to take them home, log on, do their work, save it, log off bring them in to school and when they log on to the network all the work they did on the laptop is synchronised with the school server... All the users have the same logon username and password. Is there a way for the children to be able to log onto the fizzbook under the school domain, at home, even when the domain isn't available? Hope this makes sense! Jay

This started happening to our laptop users occasionally a while ago and adding up to four minutes to the logons, this patch solved it instantly. You end up with a long delay at the "Redirecting Folders" stage. Well worth the download if your setup is like our and you encounter this: You encounter a long logon time after you enable the "Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline" Group Policy setting in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 After extracting the file you can use this in a startup or shutdown script to deploy it silently behind the scenes: wusa.exe "\\domain\dfs\dist$\patch\Windows6.1-KB2525332-x64.msu" /quiet /norestart

Hi, Problem cropped up the last 3 weeks that I’m hoping is a M$ problem as its affecting many different laptops in the same scenario, and can be replicated We use Offline Files and Sync the entire user’s documents area. However users have been recently getting a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death/Doom/Rolf Harris/Whatever) all with the same error. The system in place allows them to log in offline (at home) and we allow them to connect to their own wireless systems also. Previously there have been no problems; the users are not doing anything specific to cause the error. Manipulating a word doc, facebook poker and we recreated it by just leaving Radio1 stream running. Its important to note that this DOES NOT happen when on the wireless at school Anyone else using the same / similar setup? Many thanks, Simon BSOD is as follows RDR_FILE_SYSTEM STOP: 0x00000027 (0x00000000BAAD0075, 0xFFFFFA6019B5CC58, 0xFFFFFA6019B5C630, 0xFFFFFA6006A3F300) rdbss.sys Address FFFFFA6006A3F300 base at FFFFFA6006A1C000

I am having issues with syncing offline files. I have set it all up in Group policy and it pulls down, but when I go to Offline files it is stuck on "Ready for first Synchronisation" and doesn't do anything. If I run it manually, it works, but it will not sync on its own. If I manually create a schedule for it, this works, but I need a way to do this for all of our computers so I really need to be able to run this sync through a command line or group policy. I have tried using the scheduled task that the program creates when setting up a schedule, but it is linked to the users SID and so makes it difficult to do anything with. Any help will be much appreciated.

I am having great difficulty setting up Offline Files - a lot of which I've searched on the forum; following and replicating other people's setups to no avail. I've attached my current GPO set up for y'all to have a look at. I have administratively assigned offline files with the following: %homeshare% \\server1\profiles$\admin\%username% \\server1\templates$\admin\start menu (Enabled administratively assigned in a user gpo, too, but it did not work) In addition to the above, on Win 2003, I have right-clicked on the folder --> properties --> sharing --> caching --> 'All files and folders that users open from the share will be automatically available offline' And ticked 'optimised for performance'. Can anyone help me to get this work? Cheers.

Best Practice Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection (aka User State Virtualization) Have to say that this article on the Group Policy Blog is pretty much spot on for most things you'd be looking for in setting it up. Kinda got there before discovering it (typical init?) but still, worth looking at even if you have set it all up. Hope it helps Nath.

Hi, I'm planning on implementing Windows 7 with offline files on some teaching staff replacement laptops this summer. I know how to setup up the group policy etc. but I would like it so that the offline files are encrpted. I can see the policy for this but have a few questions: If I encrypt the files what happens if there is a problem - is there a domain decrypt certificate I need to create? If the files are encrypted, I assume they can't be accessed via bartpe, winpe boot discs? I know in XP this feature required admin rights. Is this still the case in 7. If so this is a non-starter, Teachers with admin rights ehhh! Is there a microsoft guide to how to do this on a domain? I've only found one for doing it standalone. Thanks,

We have Redirected Folders setup for My Documents, Desktop, and Application Data to a DFS share on our file server. Offline Files is setup to cache these and kick in whenever a user goes 'offline'. Sync also happens on logoff. It's a standard configuration from Microsoft from everything I've read. It's even been working fine for about 1.5-2 years. Just recently we've had reports where some users desktops just go 'blank'. After toying with it for a while, we can reproduce the issue. If a notebook loses it's connection after successfully logging on the network: The offline files sync manager notifies you that you've went offline, but the desktop goes blank and gives you a 'server is not available' error if you F5/refresh the desktop. If you reboot the notebook, have NO network connectivity at startup, and logon under cached credentials: Offline files works as expected and My Documents/Desktop displays files with no issues. Reconnecting to the network while still logged in allows for a successful synchronization and the offline files goes back online. Previously if you lost your connection, the desktop would usually go blank for 3-5 seconds and come back, or a F5/refresh of the desktop would bring it back after losing network connectivity. The CSC cache for Offline Files is correctly being populated. My hypothesis is that there was a change in SP3 that causes Offline Files to behave differently now. We don't have many notebooks running SP3 so that would explain the lack of reports about disappearing desktop icons. I've played with all of the group policy settings for offline files and haven't been able to change the behavior. I'm going to put our old SP2 image on my test machine and see what happens, if the SP2 image still works! Has anyone experienced this? Thanks!
