2) Old Acer X2 AMD, Old ubuntu Desktop

 

3) Old acer X2 AMD . Runing Myth TV for PVR Recording (This is GR8!)

 

 

4) Old Dell D520 laptop. My laptop running Ubuntu

 

5) Old Dell D505 Laptop. Wifes ubuntu Laptop.

 

6) Old Dell D505 laptop. Eldest son (8) XP laptop.

 

7) I also have a windows laptop for the rare ocasion I need to read car diagnostics..

 

All routed on a Cisco 877W router..

 

 

Mythtv has been through 4 HW builds

 

the first was a massive desktop case running an old P4.. Noisy but did the job

 

Then had a super nice little Acer Veriton, but that died

then a Dell SX280... But that died..

The Acer T180 has run for 18 months now. Standard pedastal but it does a good job.. Mainly recording Kids TV!

5 yr old laptop is my test machine it uses our school test system via vpn.

 

Why spend anything on home test equipment if you have powerful machines at work?

Better still would be to get work to buy into some server time in the cloud!

 

Other than that just a myth box,telephone and desktop.

2) Dell Inspiron D6400 laptop - super-upgraded ancient laptop, for web browsing and work.

3) Currently at work but mine, an 11 year old Dell built solely to run NFS III and 4. Which it does rather nicely

4) Bunch of games consoles, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS. All get used, as HD graphics don't bother me.

 

Very little geeky stuff at home really, it stopped being a hobby and just became my job (which I still love!).

So what do you run at home...

 

All-in-one PC that acts as the TV.

Tranquil PC used as a server for virtual machines (email server, Windows test server, Windows remote access desktop, file server, source code repository, development server). I'm currently running the router as a VM but I'm planning to replace it with a dedicated hardware device. 2TB of RAID-1 storage, all silent and passivly cooled.

Mirroring server for the above - turns on at 3am to do backups. 2TB of RAID-1 storage, plus removeable USB connected drive swapped with one in fire safe after backup.

iPad.

Macbook Air.

Netbook.

Scanner.

Modem, switch, UPS, VGA switch for switching between VGA inputs and sound mixer for combining audio sources to all go to speakers and wireless headphones.

3 Raspberry Pi boards.

I have team viewer client on the virtual XP machine. So I can access my systems from anywhere on a PC/Tablet...

 

Need to get a physical cable from the Mythbox back to the router though as I cant's WOL it in order to set new recordings when it's off either have to wait for it to power on for a scheduled recording or go and press the button.

Old dell optiplex 755 desktop from work, a seagate go flex networkd hdd which I store all my media on as it's dlna compatible and works Nicely with my recently purchased Samsung box which plays the media over the network on my tv in the lounge. I use my work iPad and work laptop at home for anything else I need.

 

I have got a couple of old laptops I use for parties for playing music etc. but they spend most of their life in a box.

 

I did go through a phase where I had all sorts of stuff wired up at home just for testing and messing around with, but those days are long gone. Not only does it take up too much room, but if your running just a few machines 24/7 it adds a lot onto your electric bill!

Same here. I used to have server-this, NT-that, Smoothwall, Win2K box, XP box as soon as it came out, wife's pc, kids' pc's, personal domains and all that good stuff. I ethernet-cabled the whole house almost in 2000.

 

Just don't have the same interest anymore. Well, I do, really, but when I go home, I leave it behind at work these days.

 

Just have a dual-core Intel, 4g of ram for home use, and I take my work laptop back and fore for everything else.

 

The electric bill is very much a factor too.

I mainly use it for gaming, currently on Hitman Absolution and Assassin's Creed 3 with the occasional F1 2013, F1 Race Stars, FIFA 13 and Need for Speed Most Wanted (Very disappointing compared to the original). Not really an FPS fan and as much as I want to, I just haven't got the time to get in to Football Manager 13 (I'm also waiting for it to go down to £4.99 on Steam! ). The Mrs and kids use it mainly for YouTube videos.

 

The PC is connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2333BW which also doubles up as my main TV as we live in a small flat and is used with our Nintendo Wii.

 

Also got an iPad (3rd Gen) and the Mrs has pretty much given up web browsing on the PC instead settling for doing everything on the iPad.

My house is fully cabled but that is for the TVs and game consoles to pipe media from one place to another, work is not a primary motivator to it.

Internet connections are via wifi or Homeplug... ethernet cabling the house tidily would require too much upheaval and I'd never get it past Mr gee40

I have 3 Shuttle XPCs in the house. The newest is mine, and that's about 3 years old - a Quad-core Q9300 with 4GB RAM. The bootable drive is a 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD. It runs XP Pro. I've got an Athlon64X2 running Win7 Pro (unstable) and a Sempron running XP Pro (semi-stable). Otherwise, a pair of NAS drives, the main one being a Netgear ReadyNas Duo with a pair of 2TB mirrored drives in it.

And I've got an ancient P4 15" Dell Latitude laptop, which also runs XP, and still works fine.

 

Finally got the TV (Panasonic 42" plasma) connected via a Wi-Fi card to the network over the weekend.

 

Call myself a geek? Only just, looking at the lack of funky gadgetry in my house.
