Used to run multiple AD servers, Certificate services, Windows Deployment Services with MDT), Radius Wireless/Wired 802.1x (NPS), 2 x Dell servers with ESXi 24/7, Firewalls in HA with 4g backup, OSPF layer 3 networking.

 

Now down to a few Lenovo mini PCs with Docker (radius, PiHole DNS, Remote management/monitoring) and a few NAS units running some VMs and Microsoft 365 AD. Wireless wise a few Aruba Hospitality APs with built in controller. Switches jus layer 2 with firewall doing vlan routing and separating/isolating the traffic. Haven't got the motivation to running/managing/fixing a complicated home network anymore. Uptime Kuma tells me any major issues whether I am at home or away which is still prob too much, lol.

Tranquil PC used as a server for virtual machines (email server, Windows test server, Windows remote access desktop, file server, source code repository, development server). I'm currently running the router as a VM but I'm planning to replace it with a dedicated hardware device. 2TB of RAID-1 storage, all silent and passivly cooled.

Mirroring server for the above - turns on at 3am to do backups. 2TB of RAID-1 storage, plus removeable USB connected drive swapped with one in fire safe after backup.

Modem, switch, UPS, VGA switch for switching between VGA inputs and sound mixer for combining audio sources to all go to speakers and wireless headphones.

Hmm - a decade(!) on, it's interesting to compare setups. We still have an all-in-one-ish PC, but that's now an Intel NUC with a 32" monitor - still used as a TV, but all via the internet connection now, no need for a physical arial. No local servers, that's all on cloud / remote servers. The iPad is a newer model, the scanner is still the same one. We still have a KVM setup, but it's more compact now it's HDMI rather than VGA. In the post-pandemic, work-from-home-capable setup, we now have a small console table with a power adaptors and a USB hub strapped to it to make for an easily-portable desk to use if we need another work-from-home desk. The oldest part of the setup is the 1985-era IBM Model M keyboard, which just keep on going.

Was running a Dell T330 hosting VMs running HomeAssistant, PiHole and Plex. Now, running a Raspberry Pi 4 running the same things, with an external 5 bay USB HDD enclosure. More than halved my household energy usage.

 

If I need anything else, I will either spin it up as a VPS online, or get another Raspberry Pi.

Docker has opened up a lot for me at home. I've migrated most services to docker and now don't really have a need for VMs at all apart from Home Assistant which can be a different experience depending on the platform from what I have seen/researched.
