You have a car - a luxury not enjoyed by the majority of humanity, it will get you from A->B (presumably) and it probably doesn't cost you a fortune to run. Would walking into a dealer and watching a pile of cash disappear in a puff of depreciation make you less annoyed? If so - well, people are the strangest things... 3

I'm not trying to be condescending but a career path as a support worker in a school was never about earning a fortune, its about making difference to the community.

I spent £1800 ( the second most I have spent on a car, £2350 being the most on the galaxy) on a below avarage miles, full history Mondeo TDCI. In 6 months.... In garage for code read due to LIMP issue In Garage for Service and suspension link In Garage for Pads, disks and a oil thermostat as it started running cold. In Garage for Tyre as it got a gash on a nearly new one. In garage for Water thermostat as it was still cold ( still did not fix this COMMON problem ) In garage for Failed Injector In garage for 4x Shock Absorber ( Ride still not brill ) In Garage for Failed Injector In Garage for MOT...... Yay just a pair of wipers... In contrast.... I bought a £72 sierra (try finding one at that price these days) in 2007, fixed it's faulty Map sensor and did 16 months only spending about £40 on it. 3s-gtech Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Kind of - I'm nearly 29 - got told to shift the old car (a battered but utterly reliable Pug 306 non-turbo D) by the missus, as it 'looks like it belongs to one of the sixth formers'. 406 Coupe wheels and a boot filling sub probably didn't help. Now got an old Focus instead, not a huge step up! Still got the MR2 in the shed which makes it all okay though.

bossman Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Look at it from a different perspective I was 26 by the time I could afford a car which was then 10 years old and needed lots of work done which cost me more than the car was worth. I then moved on to an even older car when I was 28 which cost me £200 quid but lasted me another 2 years until I decided to get a bank loan for 6k which after I had paid it off (nearly 8k) the car was worth a little over 2k and then some dumb sh*t pinched it and I only just got my 2k back. A good friend of mine once told me that the only car he would buy was one that had a years MOT and Tax and that he wouldn't pay any more than £200 quid for it. I look back on that with a kind of realisation that he alway's had a different car every year and they were all top models although old and in all the years I knew him he never had car trouble. Morale of the tale is........................................ITS ONLY A BL**DY CAR don't lose any sleep over it believe me its not worth it, there is more things in life to get wound up about.

twin--turbo Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 I work on the principal that i should get 10 miles for £1 spend excluding annual tax and insurance ( but including tax/inusrance loss gain at changeove) So a car costing £100 should do me 1000 miles.. costing 500, + 500 in bits and fixes.. needs to do 10,000 miles... I would nver buy a new , nearly new car.. just nothing in it. A freind decided to change his sierra for an Aygo costing £8.5K in order to save money... I strongly advised against , but he did it and ended up significantly worse of than running and fixing the old sierra. Rob

But I was living with my parents rent-free so my other outgoings were minimal. If you're paying rent and buying food and raising a family then no, you can't buy a swanky car.

caffrey Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I had nothing but second hand cars for years, but getting too old to spend weekends under them and fixing them on a cold driveway (plus the more modern ones are getting more expensive and harder to maintain). So I bought a new one, nothing special but I'm coming to the end of the lease and think i'll go back to old cars Never really saw cars as a status symbol - just bought what I liked.

I had a 98 Fiesta until a couple of months ago. Had it for about 10 years and I bloody loved that car. Never broke down or gave any hassle between services. Only replaced it as it was getting too expensive at service and MOT time to keep it in that state :*( I am 32 and driving that car never bothered me, to me a car is a tool to get me from A to B with as little hassle as possible.

dave.81 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I'm 31 and wouldn't class my car as rubbish and haven't had a 'rubbish' car in my eyes for 10 years+ although i'd rather spend money on cars than gadgets, drink etc. Currently have an Audi A4 Quattro Sport, going backwards before that was a Jap Imported Toyota Celica GT4, Honda Accord Type R, Jap Import Honda Integra Type R heavily modified and a heavily modified Focus about 10 years ago. But in a lot of peoples eyes the cars above are 'rubbish' so it's all what you see the car for i guess.

rich_tech Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 my £400 astra failed the other week, succumbing to a collapsed cylinder (no suprise given the oil I was going through), quoted at £5/600 to repair, My first car was a Ford Mondeo 2.0 I bought at 21, cost me £1200 a year to insure, wish I still had it too, was an awesome car and would have one again in blink of an eye.

Miscbrah Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Got the car I always wanted as a teenager. Good ones go for about £500, PERFECT ones go for about £800-1k. Perfect turbo ones go for about a million but nevermind those... Cheap (ish) insurance, old tax system so cheaper to tax than my 1.6 Astra, scrapyard bits and Haynes manual repairs on some VERY simple engines. Only thing that kills them is the rust as they're really Cavaliers. Pyroman Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 There's no such thing as an "old" car, the word you're looking for is "classic" =D. (I would say that as an owner of a 23yr old VW T25 and a 26yr old MZ TS 125 Motorcycle)
