I believe you haven't calculated that correctly... I bought a 2009 one for my other half to learn to drive in costing £99 a month, with the outright price being £5000. In a 107 currently with the fuel prices, on a 1.0 engine you're getting 100 miles for £11 exactly, whereas on an old 1.0 corsa that I used to have it cost £18 exactly (working it out with todays fuel prices). So monthly saving of £28 to start with meaning monthly cost of £71. Then a saving from £120 a year road tax to £20 a year, so £100 saving meaning monthly cost of £64. If I were to insure the 107 over the old corsa I would save £300 a year on insurance so 300 / 12 = 25 so 64 - 25 = £39 a month. So for £39 a month we have a nice newish reliable low mileage car.

I assumed you were talking about a new car, since you started your post with "Owning a house and spending money on your house is more cost effective than a new car!". But your calcs ignore depreciation vs investment and you are anyway £39 a month worse off, £480 a year.

 

BTW, fuel economy is hugely influenced by the way you drive.

I had the 1.8 version of the z3 , as long as u have a good independent BMW place near you i would say there not bad to run .

 

If all you have are BMW garages , then forget it .. When my airbag module went , they charged me £50 for a diagnostic ( even though i had done one ) , and then told me what i already knew and basically said at a guess we think its the seat-belt pretension-er.. I said i doubt that's the problem as you cant even get a connection to the module to give up a error code , so its either wiring to the module or the module its self . So took it to a independent garage and £75 later i had a whole new airbag control module.

( By the way the reason it broke was my fault as i shorted it out with a stereo hideaway box on top of it ! )

I am currently looking for another car as I have used up my Vectra, I have yet to find anything in my price range, in a manual of that size that does not handle like a barge or a coffin. I still have a rubbish car as I can't find a better one

That's actually quite reasonable. Peugeot charge £80 +VAT for theirs.

29, and until recently had an 60-reg toyota iQ until I decided to sell it, trading it for an annual season ticket travel card and a small wodge of cash.

 

Now I never get asked for lifts, don't have to worry about petrol, insurance or servicing, can mostly travel for free (unless I'm going outside zone 6) and can read or nap while travelling (unless I'm cycling, obviously).

 

Bit of a pang when I got rid of it, but I feel so much better now.

bus/rail cards arnt cheap up here. Last time i used a bus it cost about £5 to go to town and back. £10 on a oyster and i did many more miles and still have loads left

£57.40 for a weekly season ticket for me, purely between home and work without any travelcard benefits. It's not cheap anywhere.

 

There was a reason I only bought an annual one after selling the car.

My mechanic says he has something to try that may well improve my TDCI running.

 

 

Still thinking of a 3.0 S-Type which is the same basic engine as the 220 but installed in the correct orientation
