Hi - just had request for proximity access control system to operate 4 external doors here - not really IT but you know how it goes.

Anyone got any good/bad experiences? The doors are so far apart, it would be nice if they could be controlled over our network - any recommendations?

We use SALTO and it works really well, you have the option of mag lock online doors the same as paxton but also battery handles and even wireless connected battery handles now.

We had it installed into reception as part of the schools commitement to safe guarding but it also meant we then had a platfrom that could be used to secure access to the it suites etc...

Do you use Cunninghams Cashless Catering?

They also do door entry which links back to the biostore - then saves having to keep reset the codes when the students find out!

We also use Paxton Net2 kit, and it's genius. The only thing missing is AD integration, but in some ways that's not such a bad thing. There's a C# API though, if you want to cook up your own synchronisation (which I'm considering).

One more vote for Paxton here, we had a guy come in and set it up on 11 doors. The school secretary finds the s/w really intuitive and she had all the passes configured in about an hour. Another great thing is any data relating to the doors is held on the door device itself so you don't need to worry about backing anything up, install the sw and it just scans the network for paxton devices.

The software installed really easily (needed .net framework 3.5) and we were told to give the doors static IP's which I've done.

No problems as yet and it has been in about a month.

Didn't know about the API, but then again I don't know any C#

In our new building we have Paxton net2, eastrace managing the cards with AD/cmis integration and another 3rd party working on writing a custom app to get Paxton data back into cmis for e-reg at our 2 entry points.

Not so great if the door controller explodes... if you mean "data isn't lost while the server is unavailable", yes - the doors carry on working, and just get updates pushed/events pulled when the server reappears.

Sounds good - but best of luck with using it for e-reg - we tore our system out for that a while back - it was just too easy to dodge for the kids

That's what I meant, (and what I said about backups).

If the door controller explodes you just get a new one. Easy if you aren't doing anything fancy with them, bloke come out - installs it and changes it over in the s/w, you give it a static IP.

However, If you've been working on a linked up system via the API though then I guess that could mean a big rewrite?

We use the Paxton Net2 system. We have a contract with a local firm to do all the installations and support. The day to day administration is done by our Facilities manager. The only real thing we help with is the networking, maintaining the PC the database runs on and the odd upgrade.

We use a fingerprint system from synel reading from our biostore database, i woudnt recommend it as the readers are not that great.

hijacking the thread abit i was just wondering how much other schools are locked down?

we have two gates set up with auto modes to open automatically at certain times, with grouploops to get out, fingerprint/card reader, fobs and intercom to get in

followed by reception doors with auto modes, fingerprint, cards, intercom to get in and RTE button to get out

aswell as fingerprint/card access to 5 server/comms rooms in the school.

the system uses equipment from synel, jacksons and dorma. it also links in to the fire alarm and inturder alarm system and is getting very difficult to support.

We encounter a lot of door entry systems when people ask us if they can use the same card to log onto a MFD for print/copy release. 9/10 it's a paxton system the site is using.

My local college uses it and gave me a quick tour of the product - seemed to do everything you would want.

Another Paxton Net2 vote here, it's the primary access control system for my other job.

The RF ID cards were big problem at first though, most didn't work but the we found the hole punched in them for the lanyards went right through the Chip! doh...

Can you use Oyster cards for access control? Most people at the school here would already have an Oyster card, and they're easy enough to get hold of if anyone needs one. Would a generic near-field / RF ID card reader be able to read a unique ID from an Oyster card that could be used to identify an individual?
