Good point. According to that Wikipedia page, "basic information about the MIFARE Classic or MIFARE DESFire chip can be read by any ISO/IEC 14443 type A compatible reader", so I'm assuming all I need to do is find a reliable 14443 type A reader (the one from eBay says that's what it is, but I can't get it to work) and I can read a variety of cards - the RFID chips embedded into phones, or those new payment tags or contactess debit cards you see advertised, maybe (just to emphasise to anyone reading this that "basic information" is simply a 10-digit serial number, nothing to do with any Oyster/bank/phone details on the card).

 

I know and s2 and s3 can read the card but doesnt know what they are - we found that out in the office last week!

I discovered this when in London and my phone kept vibrating whenever I put my card back in my pocket, my hotel door card also did it damn and blast annoyances lol

Maybe a bit late to the thread but we have used Salto for the past 6 years. Cant complain ticks all the boxes and allows us to use the same card for our cashless catering and paper cut.

Same here. One card does it all-door access, cashless catering and pcounter. Brilliant system!:)

Ok just managed to test withg my oyster and the usb reader I have can read it

 

Many thanks. I got a different USB card reader off eBay in the end - this one does act as a USB keyboard, so you can just plug it in to pretty much any machine and run a simple console application to read the ID string it "types" when it reads a card. Interestingly, the card reader works with both my (newer model (DESFire), I assume) Oyster card and my contactless debit card, reading a ID string off either. The problem is that the card reader draws too much power to be provided directly by the Raspberry Pi, so I'll have to rig up some kind of powered USB hub if I want to use the Raspberry Pi for an access control system.
