Saying that "woman X can't be as good a referee as man Y because she runs more slowly and has poor spatial awareness" is not sexism. Saying that "women can't be as good as men at being referees because they are poorer at running and spatial awareness" is sexism - it's suggesting that all women are poorer than all men which simply won't be true for something like this where they will be a continuum of ability.

can I add a loud applaud.

Top marks on the ref course I was on went to a 16 year old girl. The 5 who failed the course were all lads who regularly play football.

I don't have a clue about the offside rule, however I'm sure my wife could tell me should I be interested (which I'm not).

Regardless of that, this whole thing has the destinct whiff of political correctness gone mad yet again...

Why is it "political correctness gone mad"? If a woman can do a job as well, or better than a man, is she not best qualified?

The young lady in question has proved herself, by running the line, in the lower leagues. Just because she is a woman, does this mean that she should not expect the natural progression up the ranks? Pure cobblers! (And I don't mean Northampton Town....for the Football fans amongst you!)

As it is, she makes a blinding decision, and makes Keys and Gray look stupid.....I call that a double whammy!

We need to get over the fact that every "ism" is "political correctness gone mad".

Am I the only one who just doesn't give a damn about what some guy said on the TV about a sports game involving overpaid men in tight shorts?

I enjoy PLAYING a good game of football when my fitness level dictates i can run more than 30 seconds without collapsing, but I find sport trully boring to watch, and only watch it on the big games to be included in social conversation occasionally and as required.

If everyone got sacked for saying something they shouldn't and being overheard then we'd all be unemployed by now.

You know what i hate....that bloody Boots advert where the women are really ill and neither of them acknowledge that they are ill and they are running around doing this and that but the OH is at home in bed with a cold "oh bless send him my love".

When i dont feel well i let everyone know! lol

Then what is the point of posting?

I refer you to my previous post about Ron Atkinson and Rodney Marsh.....Both sacked from commentating/summarising for unguarded comments on an "off-mic". I also refer you to the furore caused by SKY catching Gordon Brown on an "off-mic" during the last election. Anyone remember "bigot-gate"? ( Also, why does EVERYTHING have to be "-gate"?). SKY were supposed to have switched the mic off, and yet Brown got castigated for it. What's good for the goose?

Finally, there are some amongst us who do our very best not to make unguarded comments, so I'd still be employed, thanks. Within a media career, you have to be especially careful about what you say, and take the consequences of any slip of the tongue. That's how it is.

To be fair if I had said what they said about a teacher I would of been sacked and yes if you say something like that you should be sacked no matter what job.

One thing I learn't first when I use to be interviewed is if you mic'd up you don't saying anything you do not want to go out on air even if you think the sound is down why people do not get that simple rule is beyond me.

In fairness and in context Rodney Marshes were mocking a disaster and Ron Atkinsons coments were Racist, not really on par with what Keyes and Gray said, which was a best is behind the times, not really a sacking offense. Amazing how people blow one thing out of proportion and compare it to something wildy different.

Sexism isn't 'wildly different' to racism. It is discrimination against someone due to their sex just like racism is discrimination against someone due to their race. Sexism is still sexism, regardless of the extent.

I take issue with these points.....

It is not that long ago that Atkinson's comments were the norm. Think Alf Garnett of the late 60's/early 70's. Atkinson was behind the times, then, so what makes Keys and Gray any different? And if "at best" they are "behind the times", then what is it, at worst? Sexism? Misogyny?

Is it because it's "only against a woman"? That, my friend, is still offensive, whichever way you cut it.

I personally think she was lucky with her offside decision, like most male linesmen are.

Do you mean "...like most Referees Assistants are"?

For all of you women who DON'T understand the offside rule. here you go ...

You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue for the till. Behind the shop assistant on the till is a pair of shoes which you have seen and which you must have.

The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.

It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma.

She prepares to throw her purse to you.

If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes!

At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and "whilst it is in flight" you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes!

BUT, you must always remember that until the purse has "actually been thrown", it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other shopper and you would be OFFSIDE!

(I used this to explain to a female friend of mine. She found it both funny and informative)

It was a mile onside. lol

Thats what I said she made the correct decision with regards offside, that he was indeed onside and not offside.

I am old school, it's linesmen and lineswomen, referee's assistant is like Sanitation technician for someone who cleans toilets.

Why does there need to be differentiation between 'linesmen' and 'lineswomen' though?

Why does there not need to be, you don't say business person, you say Business man and Business woman. Can't we accept the fact that women are Women and Men are Men without it being seen as a derogatory slur.

That is political correctness gone mad.

No, it is recognising that splitting people into their genders pointlessly makes no sense and is a stupid hangover from times gone by. Women are women, yes, and men are men, yes, but like with race there is no need for it to be 'pigeon holed'. And yes, it is businessperson, like it is chairperson, head teacher (not head master/mistress), kitchen assistant (not dinner lady), refuse collector (not bin man) etc... There is simply no need to perpetuate gender specific titles. The argument you're presenting is basically 'well, they've always been called that' has been shown time and time again to be without merit, as you can compare it to racist terms too...

I am sorry you can dress it up as much as you want but what you have said just boils down to outright political correctness, no wonder people are scared t say anything incase it offends someone.

Ok, we should all start using the N word too then. Makes sense.
