As an addendum to earlier - as awesome as Goldeneye was for multiplayer, best bit for me was getting the invisibility cheat after literally an entire weekend of replaying Archives over and over and over and s0dding over on 007 in 1m22 chunks, desperately trying to knock off those last couple of seconds that were always wasted fetching Natalya from some stupid hiding place until finally, about 4pm on the Sunday, I clicked through the level-end stats... and heard that glorious, wondrous shimmer of the cymbal as I saw, in beautiful red letters, 1m17 for my time. That sound effect still sends shivers through me, sometimes I play to the end of the airport level just to get DK Mode and hear the sound of the cymbal :)

Online original Half Life, there was a map with a nuclear bunker?

Doak, and no, you pretty much had to hope he was in one particular room and if he wasn't, quit and restart. That was a nightmare.

Back to the halcyon days of text adventures.

The Hobbit

Scene - A cell in Goblin Town, Thorin is present

>Talk to Thorin

>Give Thorin the One Ring

Thorin takes the one ring from you

>Tell Thorin to put on the One Ring

Thorin puts on the One Ring

Thorin dissapears

>Tell Thorin to take off the One Ring

Thorin is not present!!!!

Wasted so much time.. and this is a game with no save points!

Discovering Operation Flashoint demo on a pc mag cover disc... lost years of my life to that game :)

I played that demo a hundred times, trying different strategies. Amazing.

My moments are mainly on the N64. Best console EVAH:

Zelda: Ocarina of time - all of it. There were too many moments of "...wow..." to list. Everything from the opening in kokiri forest, to seeing hyrule field, to the boss battles... It's pretty much the best game I've ever played. Nothing's yet beat it.

Goldeneye - Picking up the sniper rifle in the first guard tower, and frantically trying to line up your shot.

Jet Force Gemini - the epic sweeping orchestral symphonies that start up when you know there's about to be some action.

Ocarina of time - a second listing for being incredible.

Anyone remember an old Amiga/Atari/PC game called Midwinter II : Flames of Freedom ? It was the first free-roaming game and in some ways was like a very early GTA, you could jump into any vehicle and there was lots of different types. I lost many early years to that game and never came close to completing it!

Oh yes spent a lot of time playing that one as well.

Full Throttle for the PC. I loved that game. The initial cutscene with the Gone Jackals song playing over it was awesome. If you've never heard of it, go find it and buy it, it's a cult classic that's relatively unknown.

Single player.. Cod4 helicopter scene, HL2 and Knights of the old republic for storyline.

Online .. Playing sins of a solar empire with a friend VS the CPU. He had a massive fleet of 1 shiptype and I had a smaller balanced fleet, what I didn't realise is towards the end of the game he was selling all his structures to buy more ships in order to backstab me... I went afk and he took that chance to attack my fleet and when I came black his fleet was in ruins and mine was still floating around :D

Numerous times on call of duty, One that sticks in my mind is at I34 Lan; playing crossfire in the knockout stages of the SnD cup. We went 12-12 so into overtime. And we needed to win a round to stay in the game, Im the only player on my team and manage to clutch the round 1v5. The thing that makes this stick to mind tho is just as I killed the last man my teammate (sat next to me) slammed his fist on the shared desk in excitement. Must have loosened something in my PC because it just powered off... After a short panic it turned back on tho. Ended up playing 52 rounds :(

Eve-Online .. Blowing up everything with PL :D or in my time in CO2 when we had an alliance destroyer op. 50~ destroyers tech 1 fit cruising around the north, the alpha was insane we instapopped a pimp fitted nighthawk

sorry for people who don't play those games, wont make much sense.

Playing Call of Duty World at War - Headquarters on the Asylum map - I had one game that went one way then the other then back again and it was like that all the way through. We were very evenly matched and it made for a very tense exciting game with lots of kills and I was on the winning side in the end but only just.

Brilliant game but way way too short.

2. Shooting down the Red Baron in MicroProse's WWI flight simulation Knights of the Sky.

Some achievement! Did you use the old "slow right down to near stall and let him overfly you" trick which seemed to fox the AI every time?

Elite.....

Some 20+ years ago, I spent an awful long time working my way up from Mostly Harmless, to that point where you become Elite.

A finer game, I am yet to see.

Graphically, it wasn't brilliant, but it still had that certain something that would grab you and keep your interest.

Syphon Filter, on the PS, was a demo on a mag....Took one look at it, played the demo all night, then went straight out and bought the full game in the morning....Only time I've ever done that!

Lol, no, I must admit that the first time I did it was sheer luck. I could see him as a speck in the distance and emptied my guns well above him, never expecting them to drop in their trajectory and hit him, but they did and down he went! I was amazed at the programming that allowed that.

Online original Half Life, there was a map with a nuclear bunker? You could go in and activate a nuke and then the blast door would start to close and there was a mad scramble when the klaxons went off with everyone simultaneously trying to get into the bunker before the door closed AND kill each other at the same time.....awesome.

That's surely HL2:deathmatch you're talking about, the 'Runoff' map.

For me, entering the station in HL2 for the first time, on a machine built to run it. I was blown away. Also, the level in Pripyat in CoD4 was pretty special, incredibly tense, and the satisfaction at the end of the game was right up there.

Completing Creatures 2 on the C64 was also a high point. Final levels were insane.

Nope, it first appeared in the original halflife as a deathmatch map. IIRC it had a cannon in the towers at each corner...

i think it was either the lambda_bunker map or perhaps snarkpit, i can't remember. but it was def hl1. across an open area with two towers overlooking it, down into a blast room which you could press the button, it would sound a siren and you had about 30 secs to get there before the doors closed. after that you'd get the sound effect of planes flying over, then a large explosion and anyone outside the blast doors were killed.

**edit**

actually i think the level was crossfire

I loved that game - played it to death when I was about 10... Couldn't get past the bit where you needed to steal the goggles from the guys in the canyon... must have wasted about 50 hours just riding around, trying to chain smack them, failing and ending up chainsawing them out of frustration! :-(

Too many to mention even a 1000th of them - thanks to a life spent gaming.

+1 for Omaha Beach in MoH - an extremely sobering thought that it happened for real.

Many many moments in Action HalfLife, a favourite would be: Diving from a third floor height roof through a 2nd floor window, killing 2 people with a blast from the sawn-off shotgun, dying because I can't get up because someone else entered the roon stood on my prone body and beat me to death and then getting another two kills using the dead man's trigger on a grenade (one of the kills was the *** who stood on me and beat me to death).

+1 for the HalfLife bunker maps (crossfire and double cross).

I think that the moment I remember was one at a LAN party. I was playing BF2 in a competitive Domination match against another clan. We were being completely obliterated and the score was something like 50-13 in their favour. At that point either the other clan fell apart or we just completely pulled it together and ended up winning the match 0-9! Great times!

Monkey Island, randomly clicking items together to try and combine them into something that would get you to the next part of the adventure.

Baldur's Gate II, just all of it. The game is epic, one of the best DnD based video games I've ever played.
