IanT Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Whats your canteen food like!? My place is excellent!!........had a lovely pasta bake today
Robz Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 absolutely horrible, I only ever touch the stuff when it's inset day (no students so no healthy food required) and free otherwise its an appallingly horrible attempt at healthy food that even the caretakers dog walks away from!!!
K.C.Leblanc Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Pretty awful, food gets prepared hours in advance and kept warm. It's also mostly bought in rather then cooked on site. I don't know why everyone raves about Jamie Oliver's impact on school dinners. One of his key arguments was that dinner ladies weren't cooking from fresh ingredients but instead using preprepared foods. This doesn't seem to have changed.
HarryMonkey Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 No matter how bad your food is, it could be a lot worse ... You could work at Stowe.
Jamo Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I have never eaten in ours, although the pasta i see lying on the floor by the humanities stairs looks ok.....
Ambient Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Pretty good selection here. We're a "Healty Eating School" too. We get our lunch for free here (and that goes for all staff), the only requirement is that you eat it there and then in the centeen, rather then take it back to your office. i can live with that, and have done for a while now
featured_spectre Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 not too bad, we have a proper chef in (who has a sous chef and pastry chef etc). Everything is done fresh, and 90% of the stuff is local and everything is seasonal.
localzuk Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 It depends on the day here... Sometimes it can be quite flavourless, and sometimes it can be quite nice. Pasta bakes for example rarely seem to have herbs in.
Dom_ Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Disgusting... last place was free and GREAT, this place is expensive and gross :-(
sonic1485 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 I only ever have baguettes from ours but I walked past a kid at first break that was carrying a tray and I got a faint whiff of cat food. It's probably good for them!
tech_guy Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 The food is excellent here, all prepared in-house by our Chef. Portions could be bigger though but that's just me as I'm a pig.
broc Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Avoid it like the plague.... had Christmas Dinner once.... never again.... I have never seen such a pile of overcooked, tastless, unappetising badly presented excuse for food
pete Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 They send trays of bacon sandwiches to the staff room at break time. As such, I will support them in all their endeavours.
sidewinder Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 (edited) Sandwiches are passable and the 'pasta pots' look ok though Ive never had one Anything from the main kitchen itself though is hideous. Bland and flavourless. I know they're trying to cut down on salt but the food tastes like they leave out seasoning completely. I keep falling for the trick on training days of thinking 'well its free, i may as well have some' - NO NO NO I make my own (couscous, pasta, salads, noodles) or buy sandwiches from the cafe across the road (which does an incredible trade from 6th formers/lunch pass students, says a lot about the quality of the canteen) Edited March 18, 2010 by sidewinder
john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Ours is good, I've had pizza, sandwiches and other bits from them and they are very good and tasty. They make the staff room a big cake every week which is also good. They look after us, I can give them a call and ask them to put me something to one side if I am busy and they will do for me then I can just pop down and get it when I get chance so they are very good and supportive of us.

john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Well next time I visit I am coming at lunch time!!! If you come on a Friday morning you get a slice of cake As for supplier lunch I don't know what our rules are I'd probably have a pile of forms to fill in or something.....
p858snake Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 This is what I had option of whilst at High School (As a student): Ferny Grove State High School
tech_guy Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 They send trays of bacon sandwiches to the staff room at break time. As such, I will support them in all their endeavours. You lucky b***ers!
Pete10141748 Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 From what I've seen here it's pretty standard, they do offer a lot of healthy stuff at least, even if the kids don't choose it There's always something left over and put in the staffroom, but I'll always pass on that thanks, leftover cold school dinner? I'd rather go hungry for the last few hours of the day!
rad Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Ours is repetitive. Main meal is the boring stuff, one day it will be mince, then that will turn into curry, then into lasagna (not joking) Pasta everyday with a tomato covering and then tons of cheese jackets with beans sausage rolls pizza slices salad bar thats the same too We have gone all "Healthy" but then the options of chocolate muffins, millionair shortbread etc has appeared.
maniac Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 (edited) The food here is pretty good, although I only ever have the baguettes which are baked off that morning, so are nice and fresh. They also have a brilliant Coronation chicken sandwhich filling, although apparently I'm the only one who ever buys it! The food here is quite heavily subsedised by the school, you only pay £1.75 for a starter, main course and desert or drink. I think that's pretty reasonable. We also have a large % of free school meals amongst our students. Staff get a lunch for free as long as they eat it in the canteen. I tend to buy my food at break time and pay for it, that way I can eat it in my office Edited March 18, 2010 by maniac Spelling!
witch Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 We don't have a canteen Dorset got rid of all canteens in everything other than high schools some years ago. Current legislation is pushing hot food back into schools but it hasnt got here yet. The junior school I work in has hot food delivered and sometimes there are leftovers - but they arent very nice
