Hi all Apologies if this is in the wrong sub-forum. I'm new to MDM, and i'm having trouble deploying the Smoothwall Root Certificate via Lightspeed MDM. The lightspeed system is working perfectly find by the way for things such as deploying apps and config changes, which makes me think i'm making a mistake with the cert. Here's what i've done so far. 1 - Downloaded the mitm cert from Smoothwall 2 - Logged into LS 3 - Selected the correct group to deploy from 4 - In the "Policies" section, scrolled down to "Certificates" 5 - Clicked "Add New" 6 - Click on "Select Certificate" 7 - Click the "+" symbol to upload the cert 8 - Give the cert a name of "Smoothwall Root Certificate", clicked "Add" 9 - Ensure that the cert is selected and press save. The certificate shows in the policy as present, but no matter what i do i dont seem to be able to get the cert to download and install. Note that the MDM policy will allow me to install it manually from the Smoothwall as a work around. Am i correct in thinking that once LS does correctly download the certificate that it should show up in General\Device Management on the iPad, alongside the LightSpeed Profile? Many thanks

Evening guys I'm soon going to be starting my study for the 70-410 exam. My experience with Windows servers is constant since Windows 2000 Servers was released, and i've been playing about with Windows Server 2012R2 for a while now (both at home and now more and more at work) I learn well with a combination of books and playing (on my test network of course), and so i'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of a good book they've personally used for the exam. p.s - Apologies to sound a bit blunt here, I'd prefer to have no replies to this thread over people suggesting books that they haven't read themselves.

Hi all I made a new years resolution to pass some technical exams this year. I've got a lot of experience/time-served in IT Support/Management in schools...but never really had any qualifications other than my degree. Since January 1st I've passed both the A+ exams, Network+ and Security+ My main reasons for wanting technical certs is to: 1. Have an achievement every once in a while (an exam pass) 2. To have a goal to work towards 3. To learn new stuff 4. To make myself as attractive as possible to employers when the managed service i'm working in eventually ends (yep, BSF), as i'd like to be a regular Network Manager again. My question is where to go next with my certs? The A+ exam wasn't a challenge due to my existing experience (i only really decided to sit these exams because there's a possibility that i might be in a position where i can teach the course at a local adult education centre), but i really enjoyed learning the theory of Network+ and Security+. I'm wondering if i should go down the Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, ITL or Prince2 route now. My experience of Windows Server, AD, DNS, DHCP etc is quite good, however, i've been stuck in CC4 land for a few years now. My ultimate goal is to again be an IT/Network Manager running my own team (i did this for 4 years prior to BSF), so what certs do you recommend next?

Hi all A school i look after has a simple AD/GPO design whereby students are directed to a specific folder for their desktop and then a different folder for their start menu. No problems there, yet. It has become apparent that students have write access to the desktop, which in turn presents their saved work to every other student (on their desktop) I've unticked the ACL to allow students to write to the redirected desktop folder, but the result of this is that an error message appears when the students logon stating that access is denied to the folder, resulting in none of the shortcuts appearing. I've checked the rest of the ACL's and nothing looks to conflict. The pupils group definitely has read and list folder contents rights. Any ideas?

Netgear DG834G I've been using this router on my KC connection for getting on for 10 years now. Never missed a beat. It's survived 4 house moves around the city of Hull, which has seen connection speeds up to the speed of 20meg downstream.

Personally speaking, i'd make a snapshot Msi containing the file(s) you want to deploy. I sent out our Crtl Alt Del background .bmp file using this method, and also a .Scr file. Works great, and its fuly automated for new computers to the network.

Long story short.....i've ust setup a new WSUS server. All the computers have checked in, 40 out of the 47 are showing yellow in the main pie chart, the other 7 are green. No problem there. However, when i've configured WSUS to boot out the updates....it just wont! Would any of you be kind enough to print screen your WSUS settings in the Computer Settings\Admin Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update GPO (the full screen of that GPO would be nice) and add it to this thread, or e mail me it? This is just to see if i've missed off something stupid. I've used WSUS with great success in the past, so i sut can't figure out what i might be doing wrong. The computers are all online and ready to go, i can ping them etc, and Windows Firewall is turned off. Strange one.

Hi Does anyone know off the top of their head what update category WSUS puts .net Framework 4 in? i.e Critical, Security etc. Many thanks

Coolio, i'll give it a go. Its the fact that the script moans about a software restriction policy which has got me confuddled....because i dont think we have any setup!

Morning team. Here's the situation. We're moving all the print shares from a 32bit server to a 64bit one. We think we have successfully loaded both the 64bit and 32bit drivers onto the new server, however, when i alter the VB script to ensure that the clients install printers from the 64bit server, it wont work. After closer inspection (when i run the script from a desktop), the script is complaining about a software restriction policy...which is preventing it from running. When we change the script back, and install the printers from the old 32bit server, the printers install fine. I'm going to spend most of today looking into this, but i just thought i'd throw this one out to everyone, in hope that someone has seen the same issue. EDIT - This issue has now been fixed. It appears that incorrect 32bit drivers were being used. After some more research, it appears that if PCL6 64bit drivers are being used, and then PCL6 32bit ones are also required. Sorted now. In my last job (NM of a secondary school), i deployed an Msi of VNC (made in-house) to every computer on the network. In my current job, where i visit many different schools, i find that the technicians get up and walk all over to the school for the smallest of problems. I honestly can't get my head round how and why they havent done something similar to what i did in my last job. Madness.

Any Malware on the PC which might have hidden all the files and folders? I've had a few laptops come to me like this. I opened the C: drive....to find nothing! All that had happened is that the Malware had hidden all the folders. I simply had to un-hide them once the virus was removed. Might not be this though.

Ah right ok, i see what you're saying. Strange one. I've now logged a call with the software maker to see what they can do to help the situation. Thanks for everyones help

Opening a .cip file in my situation does nothing when logged on as a normal user....it doesnt open a blank document as you say.

Hi Guys This is my first post on here I've come up against a brick wall with the issue of making sure that all .cip files are set to open up in Communicate in Print (software). At present, .cip files have to be opened using the File/Open method in the software, however, staff at the school would like to be able to double click any .cip file stored in a shared drive, and then have it open in the software automatically. At present, this doesnt work, and when a .cip file is double clicked, nothing happens. Because most of the users are restricted with CC4, they dont even have the open to select the correct application (Communicate in Print) from the list. Any ideas? I can imagine it will be some sort of reg change, but i dont know where to start. I'm happy with the process of pushing out the reg file with CC4, but i just dont know what to put in the reg file itself. Many thanks

I've used Wininstall LE for many years to create snapshot packages, and not once have i had an issue with it. I always use a totally 100% clean install of XP off the disk to create the snapshot. In my last school (I was the NM), before i moved into a new job, i had literally every software package being deployed via Msi apart from Sims. This meant that our RIS images were very small, and only included the OS and drivers. So, +1 for correctly made Wininstall LE snapshot Msi's

I have mine setup just like the above post. 1 server running 2003R2 with Active Directory, DHCP, DNS etc. My main desktop PC is connected to the domain so that i can play about with GPO's etc. My Media Centre in the living room runs Windows 7, and my NetBook is also running Windows 7. All my music, films, music and documents are stored on my server, and can be ran on any device. I'm even going to setup WDS soon, just to play/learn. I have to say that at least 90% of what i know about networks/windows is brought from my playing about with my home network. I remember when it started out about 11 years ago lol. I had 2 computers, one with Win98 and the other with Win95...and i managed to share files with a cross-over cable lol. This "network" grew and grew over time, and eventually i setup 2000 Server to play with Active Directory, then onto 2003.

Your Samsung NC10 (ideally a black one) for my Sony Vaio VGN-A497XP Spec and condition of my laptop is as follows: Intel Pentium (M) 2.00 GHz Processor 2GB RAM 100GB Hard Drive 54G Built in Wireless Wide Black-Back Screen Fresh and clean install of Windows XP Professional + Sony Wireless Mouse The condition of the laptop is very good. There is a small mark on the top of the laptop, but that has only come from an old carry case strap. The battery has seen better days, and doesn’t last long without the power lead (this has been caused by being plugged in all the time). That’s about it really, apart from those issues, everything else is in great condition. An image of the laptop type has been attached. Photos of the actual laptop can be sent on request...if you're interested. The NC10 must be in the same condition type (very good, with all keys working and no big marks or scratches). The operating system on the NC10 isn’t a problem, as 7 will be going on it anyway.

Personally speaking, i think it you "lock them down", it will make them turn against ICT. On the network i used to manage at a school before i change jobs to my new compnay, i used to allow staff to have local admin rights on the PC they were currently on. Staff knew the score when it came to installing software they shouldnt be.....i'd just re-build the computer with an image. It worked very well for us.
