What Web Filtering Software does everyone use?

What Web Filtering Software does everyone use? The reason I ask is that the school I work for uses Censornet and that crashes more often than Stevie Wonder driving a dodgem.

We use Astaro as our firewall and content filtering solution. Works very well at the current time its been up over 56days without issue

here quite happily - regularly 100+ days uptime, generally only lost to extended power outages. All the extra patches from the support site applied. What issues are you having?

That made my day. Thanks. Incidentally, 56 days is kids' work. Because I am too lazy to apply kernel updates I have had 350-day *connection* uptimes on my home smoothie! Only a powercut/cheap UPS prevented me hitting the 1 year mark.

Same here. Excellent product and pricing.

current uptime is 84 days. and not a single problem with it.

Corporate guardian here as first step filtering before lea connection.

 

If anything smoothwall is too powerful and feature rich so you can get a bit lost but it is a great solution.

 

Support are great.

My usb stick might be like the real person though as it's a bit legless one fell off.

Well we were using Censornet which, yes, is about as stable as a very unstable thing in high winds balancing on a large sphere rolling down a hill....

 

Now have Smoothwall and it's excellent. It is very feature rich but once you get used to where to find what you want, it has pretty mcuh anything you want - plus any feedback usually gets incorporated straight back into the product. It's also got the rather impressive flash filter, and is the only solution that's BECTA approved iirc from other threads.

 

Used to use Smoothwall 1/2 at home, got several 200 day uptimes with that.

I wish I had the go ahead to get SmoothWall... it looks very, very comprehensive.

 

We use a Sophos WS1000... it's OK, it's just not that flexible.

 

We have used a CachePilot, that was dire++

 

OpenDNS is a potentially free option but not very customisable & not really a filter but offers some filtering.

We use A Barracuda 410 Webfilter appliance. Until late this let week we had some issues with filtering by Ldap syncronization with Active Directory, but after some time on the phone with their tech support folks, it's working very well. We migrated from Smoothwall.

Well, until May anyway with RM taking over in September, I doubt SLT will renew - hell they cant even agree to get 50 additional licences [at reduced rate too!] then complain cos the staff can access facebook, etc...

it's been up for 102 days and pushing around 15mbits and 200 users at peek time.

I just wanted to say, which is hopefully useful to other members, that CensorNet v3.x hasn't been updated since 2006. It is end of life and no longer in development as an open source project. There is a migration path to the new version if people are interested. There are still many people that use it and we have kept the web site live for reference and historical reasons. It is based on an old version of Debian which no longer receives security updates so it should not be used in production if at all possible.
