Charge up the battery in an identical laptop (or pinch a charged battery from another one) and try turning on without the power supply attached. If it works without the PSU but with a charged battery, they've probably snapped the connection pin on the motherboard, or the whole unit has broken lose from its solder points.

I know you've stated DNS is running fine on the servers, but have you double checked the IPs being dished out to the XP clients? Can't find the KB article but I know we were having massive login time issues till I spotted DNS had switched round so the primary DNS was our proxy and not our PDC - switching it back took the time down by 90% at least.

Most days, Derby -> middle of nowhere, about 17 miles but mostly on A roads - 30 minutes or less out of rush hour, up to an hour in it. Few days a week it's Barnsley -> same middle of nowhere which is about 50 miles, less than an hour on a good run, up to 2 in rubbish motorway traffic.

I was using Royal TS, then came across the free version of Remote Desktop Manager - can't remember what it was that niggled me about this, but I went on to use mRemote which does an even better job - or at least, whatever it was that was bothering me, doesn't now! http://www.mremote.org

Might be a silly observation, but isn't it better it stays there unless you're doing multiple copies by week etc - otherwise when they come and say "I deleted X from my laptop last week, can you get it back?" it will have been nuked by the mirroring process...

Had major issues here this morning with copies that had grabbed 5418 then played up so much they couldn't get to 5419. Fingers crossed it's settling now - the file linked in the thread is (I assume) the same tool offered by Eset in their knowledgebase if you want to get it from an official source. Sounds like a variant on one of the old P2P/autorun viruses that presented itself as a folder full of keygens? If it's one of the rootkit style ones it will have neatly disappeared under the radar - depends on what technical level your newsletter is aimed at but using a rootkit scanner/remover app may be beyond them and a backup and format may be the only solution for a home user. How about suggesting that they upload the keygen app to virustotal/jotti.org and then go on to look for a removal kit on the basis of what the scanners pick up?

We have 2 IT rooms full of the AL1716 (4:3 hard glass 17" model) and they've been no trouble at all - also survived direct hits from footballs and various other items. Look nice in terms of both aesthetics and image quality.

I was just about to add a batch file version then scrolled to the end of the thread - any chance of posting your finished/working script? Looks like a very handy tool for tidying up at the end of term

Hi Michael - It's not the end of the world, just found it worrying that they'd vanished, I always tried to keep myself up to date with them every month for emergencies/PC builds etc. Plugins, XP Post SP3, Compatibility and .NET were what I usually used but the XP Post SP3 one was the one I was after - last version I have is April, if there was a more recent one it would be handy to grab it but don't put yourself out! Does anyone know what's happened to Michael's brilliant update packs? Just about to do some imaging and thought I'd grab whatever the current ones were and they seem to have completely vanished from the website. Can't find any announcements on here or the logistix site about them being pulled - hope they've not gone the way of the original Autopatcher

Do a factory reset on the WAP then connect it directly to a laptop with a network cable - it'll most likely have DHCP on by default after the reset which should hand out to the laptop, you'll then be able to see the gateway IP and off you go

Splitting a single 10gb archive over 2 DVDs which have the potential to go bad sounds like an easy way of losing a 10gb archive If you repack the existing archive with any modern archiver, you should be able to change the compression method to storage only - so it doesn't try to recompress the file just very quickly chops it up into more manageable chunks. If you're archiving something you really don't want to lose, I'd recommend creating some PAR files to go with it on each disk. You may end up using 3 DVDs to burn but at least you'll stand half a chance of getting it back when you need it!

Aren't you skipping over the extra letter in the acronym there? COEM = Commercial OEM = building PCs for resale. Think someone at MS has mixed up your query...

Got sorted in the end, think it must be a wierd and wonderful glitch in the chipset on this board - for reference if anyone googles this up, I ended up plugging the failed drive back into the sata raid on its own which stopped the reboot loop and displayed the expected post POST raid config screen. Bizarrely after that it quite happily copied data from the 'failed' drive to a new blank drive to recreate the array!

AAARGH. If I hadn't had a bad enough week already, this morning, 1 server's Intel matrix console showing failed drive in a mirrored set on a vanilla 2003 server install. Shut the server down, unplugged failed drive, plugged in a new sata drive, restarted, added drive back into volume set and left it rebuilding. A while later, about 80% through rebuilding, beep beep beep from UPS as power drops and it runs briefly before shutting down the server. As far as I know, this shouldn't do any harm to the working drive which the mirror was being rebuilt from? As soon as the power's back on properly, restart the server again expecting it to continue rebuilding or restart from scratch on the new HD. I never get far enough to find out - the server is now rebooting immediately after the first POST screen before the raid controller option rom kicks in. If I unplug both drives, it will show the screen (with no drives, obviously) and continue to fail to boot since there are no drives present. If I plug the original working drive back in, reboot loop. I'm not 100% familiar with where all the raid volume info is stored - I know I could plug the drive into another machine and rescue the data from the volume but I don't want to have to do a whole server rebuild Couple of q's for those more up on this than me - If I clone the working drive, will that pick up everything it needs so that I have a working copy as an initial backup? Is there any way to get the raid 1 info off and reset the drive to a single sata HD so I can attempt to get the server back up in a hurry then worry about reRAIDing later? Any other ideas? Motherboard is an Intel 865 chipset, onboard sata raid was being used (not my choice, stuck with the servers we had) so I'm not sure whether I could track down an identical one on ebay and whack the drive on that to continue if the raid chip has died somehow? Already had a failed router, dead proxy and a million other things go wrong this week, not happy!

Have you done a directory listing on the command line to compare? Explorer seems to have a lot of exciting quirks when one of the hidden .ini files that makes special folders special gets copied somewhere it's not expecting! I've had a few that appear as "Joe's documents" when the actual path if you navigated down through it is still /home/joe/stuff etc
