Hi After many months and hours of work...we still havn't found the problem or a solution. This is what we've worked out and our partial fix. -Using a GPP to map printers for pupil accounts, sometimes this fails with the usual 'the specified port is unknown' error in application log. -If you then manually try to add a printer you get the same message. -If you restart the spooler (via Task Manager as pupils don't have access to services.msc) and then manually add the printer...it works!!! -So the fix...In Computer group policy for the machines the pupils use, I allowed the ability to restart the spooler service. -I then created a logon script for the Users group policy to Stop and then Start the print spooler. The script then runs gpupdate to reapply the GPP settings. -The result...(in I think just about all cases) the printers are mapped. If they aren't, then if the pupil logs off and then back on again then the printers are mapped. The problem is that many teachers don't realise a logon/off fixes the problem. So frustration still exists in the classroom. But no matter how hard I try I can't find what is causing the problem. It is only Windows 7 that the issue occurs with and it's a totally random when it will strike. We have imaged a room of 33 machines identically, if you log into them all with the same account then anywhere between 5-10 will fail to map their printers. I just can't explain it...

Fixed it myself. An upgrade to the the 5308xl firmware did the trick. Can't say why though...

Hi I have a strange problem, which appears only to have started over the weekend. In short, DHCP requests over wireless are timing out in the majority of cases and so IP addresses are not being renewed. The DHCP server is a Windows 2003 machine. I have installed Wireshark on this, as well as a few wireless clients. What I see is that DHCP DISCOVERS are always received by the DHCP server from the wireless cleints, but DHCP OFFERS are not always received back at the client. They appear to go missing. I suspect a VLAN routing issue perhaps (especially as wired DHCP requests are always dealt with and sent/received correctly), but I can't see what. The wireless module is a HP Wireless Edge XL Module, situated in Port H of a HP 5308xl switch. I have included the config of that switch below. Any help much appreciated. Hi There must be somebody else out there who also has this problem! I'm using Logic Express 9. If I create a new project and save to a network share then all of the Audio Functions of that project (except Change Gain) are greyed out. If I save locally, then none of the Audio Functions are greyed out. The network uses a 1gb link. The problem is that I'm the administrator of a school network and students need to save to a network share so that the teacher can access and mark work. (The test I did to show this problem was to log into two iMacs next to each other (as administrator). I loaded Logic and selected 'New Project'. After pressing record, you are prompted to save. One I saved to the administrator's user profile on the local hard disk, the other to a share on our MAC server. Both saved ok, and a recording was made on both. However, the functions are greyed out on the one saved to the MAC server and not greyed when saved locally. I checked permissions on the file on the MAC server and the administrator has Read/Write access. I didn't do anything more complicated than that. I've never used Logic until I was shown this problem to investigate by the way!) Any ideas?? Andrew

another update: After some testing I've been unable to find what is causing this issue. However, the only solution that appears to cure the problem is to change the Home Folder path in AD so that the IP address is used instead of the DNS name. For example, if path was \\server-1\username$, change it to \\192.168.1.1\username$ Can't explain it though...

Hi, thanks for replying. Are you having the same problem? I've spent a lot of time attempting to work out what's going on here, and it really has me stumpted. The randomness of the problem and the total lack of anything in any logs is a real pain. I've managed to work out that that it appears the ACL is removed - and only from the the top folder in the Home path. For example, if I have a user with home path: $, randomly (and you can watch it happen), on login to a Mac the owner details are removed on the windows data server the home drive is located. If you then reset the local admin to be owner of this folder, you can gain access to the home area and view that all permissions/owner details on sub folders are unaffected. Even stranger, in all cases where this happens, the 'Library' folder the mac profile creates here is part complete - but always it seems at a different stage. So it seems that the mac can write ok to the home folder (as the Library folder demonstrates), and it can set the permissions on this folder ok. So why randomly does the top level shared folder occasionally lose it's ACL? (By the way - in the system.log file on the mac, there is no difference logged between an occasion when the problem doesn't occur compared to when it does - so the logs appear useless.)

Hi Don't quite know how to explain this one... but here goes. Server is XServe 2.26ghz Mac OS X 10.6.4 and I have a suite of 16 iMac 21.5" 3.06ghz Mac OS X 10.6.4. The organisation here is a Windows 2003 domain, and it has only been in the last fortnight that the Mac network has been integrated using the Active Directory plugin on the Xserve. I'm new to administrating the Xserve/iMacs. Our users can log into the iMacs using their windows logon. Each windows Active Directory account has a home folder set. On logging into the iMacs the first ever time, all is ok, with the home folder being correctly mounted and access being achieved. However, presumably on logout, it appears that the ACL is removed from the home folder on the windows server, so no permissions or owner is visible. The next time you try and login into an iMac using that account, you get the error message: "You are unable to log in to the user account "" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred." Now I know that this error is being caused because access to the home folder for that user is being denied, but does anybody know (or seen before) why the permissions are being removed from the home folder on the windows server. Incidentally, although we have only being using the iMacs for a couple of weeks, this problem doesn't occur with every user every time they log in. Although, in the last couple of days the problem appears more frequent. It is this randomness which is making it harder for me to understand. Any ideas? Thanks Andrew

If these are the type that lay there eggs just above the waterline in a cluster then yes, have had these before. They can lay infertile eggs, but you should be able to tell by the colour. If they go a whitish colour they are probably not going to hatch, but if they stay a nice shade of orange you should be ok as long as they stay in a humid enviroment like your tank lid Jon

We have just implemented this using smoothwall and its 'per location settings' very nice solution! We have created a user account that only has access to enable and disable each room in per location settings, what i am interested in is, can i pass the username and password to this from a link on our staff intranet? I want to make it as easy as possible for the users. Thanks Jon
