jamesfed Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Hi all, The network manager here is asking me to see how many other ICT staff members work ‘Full Time’ (compared to Part Time/Pro Rata) at their place of work and for those who do how they justify the extra working hours. Many thanks, James

There's always something to do whether it's a slow PC or WSUS not updating properly or someone's whiteboard is not doing what it should or someone can't find a printer or some service has stopped running on the server..... or...or..... It's a costant drip feed of tasks, either scheduled or fire brigade! The network simply wouldn't run, and teachers couldn't teach to full capacity without constant IT support of one form or another.

dave.81 Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I think during term time it's common sense to work full time. During the holidays i'm mainly here to support our admin and finance team, also spend a lot of time working on the stuff i just cannot do during term time, server work etc.
Rydra Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 1 Network manager (Full time 37 hours + 2.5 hours paid OT at lunch), 2 Technicians (one of them me) Same hours as above, but I am Term Time only. We get more 'real' work done when the teachers/students aren't here than any other time. Simply because it's very hard to run a new network cable, or install a new whiteboard, or refit an intellidesk when there's 30 kids in the room. Plus things like full room rebuilds/software installs take a lot of time, and students/teachers don't like it when you decom a classroom for a day to rebuild it.

Could I ask how many members you have in the team and how many users there are in the school? 3 members (Junior Technician, Deputy Network Manager and ICT Manager). About 650 students 11-16 and then about 400 in a shared sixth form (technicaly half of them are our students). About 50 classrooms throughout the school, all with smartboards. 6 ICT suites, plus music and DT ICT areas with bother have other 20 pcs each. 6th form study area with 20 PCs. Teacher laptops for most full time teachers (probably about 70 or them). Loads of servers at the moment, we're moving to virtual setup. Wireless throughout most of our buildings (mostly unmanaged at present). Probably about 40 office computers. Printers in every department office. The summertime is primarily used for big infastructure upgrades. This summer we added 2 new ESX servers and a SAN. We also vlaned our selves off from our partner school (which was project we lead), and finaly started using DHCP. Installed 20 pcs into our music department.

Full time 35hrs a week Term Time Only. No problem with overtime if needed. But project has to be talked over with the HT and authorised. OT or TOIL available, and they will make me take it. Emergency OT never been an issue. I couldn't justify any more hours really, nor working during the holidays. penfold Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Full time, reason being maintenance. You can get more work done in the holidays when there is no one interupting you every 5 mins. Also used for testing/updating moving of equipment etc when rooms are free.
SteveBentley Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 37 hours, full time, 30 days annual leave plus any non Bank Holidays between Christmas Eve lunchtime and the 2nd Jan. Much the same as everybody else has said, the summer is the time when you can rip infrastructure out and upgrade it without inconveniencing too many people. Although that is becoming less and less possible with MSc courses that have students working on projects through the summer. If we get the summer work right - in particular making sure that the student lab image is nice and stable and fast - term time runs a lot more smoothly for everyone. That of course goes out of the window when somebody decides in the middle of August that there is money for new machines and furniture after all and you have to start again...

We are all term time only + 4 weeks. 1 person is in most days in the hols doing maintenance. We are a 1400 student secondary, 175 staff, 650 laptops/PCs and all the gubbins that goes with that + supporting a few feeder primary schools. We manage fine not being full time. If we do need people to work extra in the hols for a big kit refresh etc. they get paid overtime (I don't but I just accept some extra work goes with the salary)

sandeep2504 Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 full time, 9-5, 36hours a week, 24 days holidays + bank holidays etc three member team (ICT Tech, Senior ICT Tech and Network Manager) supporting nearly 1000 users. I dont think we could survive part time with the amount of out of hours jobs. We need to full time to apply windows update, cc3 updates, software reboots on server, rebuild ICT rooms and downtime during working hours in a big no no.

bossman Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 37 1/2 hours a week 52 week contract - 22 days holiday with 5 extra days for bank holiday's and 5 extra for long service that gives me a grand total of 33 day's........ :o It's good enough for me as me an webman rarely get to use our quota and sometimes we are allowed to take time off in school term time to catch up with our holiday's.
