  1. It turns out that the ethernet first mile RAD box is the cause of the problem. If its switched off then the network speed is restored and the thin clients boot fine. RM have been notified as they supply our internet service.
  2. I have a large number of thin client devices on my network that (up until last Tuesday) were booting to a windows 8 server and connecting fine. Since last week, some fail when connecting to the remote desktop servers yet some in the same classroom work. If i switch a thin client that has connected fine into a port where a thin client has failed, it wont boot and vice versa. The problem isn't site wide so it can be tracked to 4-5 switches which is displaying the error. I'm inclined to beleive that there is a rogue device or NIC card on the network that is broadcasting resulting in the slowdown. Can anyone offer any advice?
  3. Presently, my school does not have WIFI but with the advent of the tablets, smartphones and BYOD as a whole, I am trying to gather how your schools manage. My questions are: 1) I presume you will use a managed WIFI system, do you limit each mobile users bandwidth so that they do not hog bandwidth? 2) how do you get around PAT devices that are brought in? 3) do you get the MAC address of all your mobile devices and only let those devices that have registered onto the system? 4) have you found that standard desktop purchasing has fallen due to mobile devices? 5) is WIFI really that expensive?? Thanks in advance
  4. 1.) I did put the server into install mode and it installed fine 2.) Sims was installed into C:\Program Files (x86) 3:) I used simsinst to install it. The Problems i experienced are with the s:\ drive mappings on the rds server not always mapping. I resolved this by changing the shortcut path to 'pulsar.exe' I also have to manually update the servers when capita releases an update, although this isnt too bad as they dont release them that often and we only have 4 rds servers.
  5. The cert has 4 sans, the internal and external names of the exchange server, the auto discover name and the domain name. The problem is with internal accounts connecting to exchange 2010 via outlook 2007. The username resolves fine and the user sees their emails fine. The problem occurs after about 5-10 minutes when the login prompt appears with the external name of exchange. If the user clicks off the logon prompt, they can continue working with their emails.
  6. I recently upgraded exchange 2003 to 2010 and all mail flow (internally and external) is working fine. I have bought and installed a certificate and am able to connect smartphones to allow users to pick up their emails on their mobile devices. The issue I am having is that users are being asked to re-enter their login credentials to outlook when its been open for 5-10 minutes. Strangely enough, the login prompt box gives the external address of our email server. Does anyone on edugeek have a solution to this or have suffered a similar issue to this?
  7. Yes it only shows up on the ts servers, I've been considering allsorts such as perhaps the sims server has reached a set amount of connections and will not accept any more but this can be disproved by the s drive not mapping when theres as little as five connections. I think i will modify the connect.ini that way the user can connect to the sql instance without looking for an s drive. Cheers
  8. I have deployed 4 terminal servers on 2008 r2 and install sims onto them. My sims server is server 2003. when my users logon to a thin client the s drive doesnt always map meaning sims will not load. when i log onto one of the terminal servers i can sometimes browse to the sims server share by dns name sometimes not, so i try the ip address, again sometimes i can connect, sometimes not, I therefore created a script that attempts to map the drive firstly by dns, then try fqdn then if those two are unsuccessful then it trys via ip address. The problem is so intermittent its difficult to reproduce and the event logs simply tell me that the server share is unavailable. I have checked that there isnt a limit to the number of connections to the server share and that the user has rights to the share. Capita have been as useful as ever and i have logged a call with microsoft. Has anyone else had this strange issue?
  9. Whenever i click "start copy" the robocopy console appears behind the robocopy interface but nothing happens (the robocopy interface gets cleared of the source and destination paths..)
  10. I too am looking at getting the school's agreement so would also like to be quoted happy. 350 pc's (core cal pack) 200 terminal server licenses 1 external TS License 13 server os' Thank's
  11. Have you experienced this before on these workstations?
  12. I am using pxe to boot to a tftp server which in turn initiates a remote desktop session to the server so im sure its nothing within the windows enviroment.
  13. I know its a strange one but someone, surely must have experienced it also!
  14. I have a strange problem with some older pcs i have that i would like to boot from the network from. When i set the bios to boot from the network and restart the pc they connect to the network fine but when i restart the pcs, it doesnt even attempt to look for an ip address it just gives me a "pxe-mof exiting pxe rom" And it will give me this error messsage everytime i restart the pc. The only way i can get the pc to boot from the LAN again is to remove the power lead from the pc for 20 seconds> plug it back in then restart, it then boots to the network fine UNLESS i restart and the whole process starts again until i unplug the power cable. The onboard lan is VIA Rhinefast 2 fast ethernet and the bios has been flashed to the latest version.
  15. Thanks for all your replies and bigger thanks to microsoft for having me/us over a barrel!
  16. I currently have 335 pcs and was looking at getting a schools agreement to cover these pc OS and office. I also have sophos endpoint installed and i would have needed to get 335 licenses for antivirus as well In the summer I plan to migrate 200 pc's to thin clients using terminal services but am unsure if i then need to licence these 200 pcs as they wont have an OS installed on them and will not require sophos as it will be installed on the server they are connecting to. Could i just get the schools agreement to cover 135 pcs, sophos licenses to cover 135 pcs and then purchase terminal server cals for the 200 thin clients? All terminal servers will also be licensed..
  17. I am looking to create a backup/disaster recovery policy and was wondering if anyone could point me to a repository of templates (should one exist) or allow me to view theirs??

  22. Its a real shame the whole MST thing went belly up. Some great tools from those guys!
  23. Strangly enough, i dont know his name.....
  24. Totally agree on the point you've made with the engineer. Absolutely terrific guy who know's his stuff, just the fact that hes here so regular proves that theres something wrong. Although the engineer is on-site next day, the pc is still out of action until it is fixed then rebuilt!
