dsk Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I used to be a bit of a Nokia fan, but of late ive found their handsets to be a little disappointing. I have to admit the iPhone 3GS does look pretty damn good, quite a few of the missing bits have been fixed, but the price is rather prohibitive (especially for an technician)! I dont imagine the Hero being much cheaper, but it should be more affordable (i hope). Enter the HTC Hero. Been looking at the specs and reading about it, watching every single video of it on Youtube. I have to say, it does look bloody fantastic! The SenseUI and the home screen is perfect! Everything you want, just there! What would you guys choose?
Diello Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Hero all the way - HTC make blinding handsets, & Android is a decent OS. You'll pay through the nose for an iPhone which isn't as blinding as people make out.

Ric_ Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Of the two Hero.. but neither have a keyboard... loved the keyboard on my HTC Touch Pro and the one on my Touch Pro2 is almost as good. Once you'ce had a keyboard there is no going back!!!

Must be a personal preference thing because I have had a number of phones with keyboards before the iphone 3G ( not the latest 3GS ) and I much prefer the on screen keyboard not having to slide a mini keyboard in and out etc

My Touch Pro2 isn't much thicker than an iPhone anyway. @dsk: I don't know if you've also considered the Touch HD... as a Windows Mobile smartphone to throw into the mix. Dos_Box loves his! (Being slightly older, you may find it's slightly cheaper too if budget is a constraint).

I had a play with the new iphone 3GS and that was a lot snappier with double the memory and a faster cpu so that was good enough for me yes my current handset is slower with the new OS but I still enjoy it again personal preference and as per the other threads on here comparing iphones / computers or whatever it may be its down to the user who purchases that phone because they are buying it for them not anyone else and am sure most people agree with that. Best way to find out which one you prefer is to go around the different stores ie orange / 02 / vodafone or just car phone warehouse and have a play with each of them and see which you prefer and buy it for yourself lol

pnlrogue1 Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 I've got a T-Mobile G1 (the first Android phone) and, having used HTC phones with Windows Mobile for ages, I have never had a phone I've liked more Android is excellent and while it is still lacking one or two features (namely Bluetooth file transfer), it's catching up rapidly and making updates for them I would seriously consider the G1 over the Hero though - the on-screen keyboard is rubbish for anything more than a short message - if you want to be using it for e-mails and long messages (or anything else which involves typing for that matter) then you'll grow tired of the on-screen keyboard very quickly PM me if you want to know more

I think im liking the home screen approach that other handsets are doing. Shame really the iPhone would be quite the device if it had something similar.

riskyburden Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Just been searching the web for a comparison and found a test with video footage of the Hero here: HTC Hero hands-on: Flash, keyboard and ruminations (updated!) I think it neat but I own the iphone 3g and thats all I can comment on. As for the iphone the plus's are: The App Store ITunes for backing up your data (Mediamonkey is better for organising and adding media to the phone) GPS for finding stuff near you with googlemaps Satnav when you get the Navigon app Fast browsing (better over 3g than wireless which is strange) Seems to have good reception and clings onto a signal (tested on the Isle of skye) Push e.mail (although I wish the printers would stop sending me messages as its such a let down) The OS is polished I've dropped it many times whilst on the booze and its still going strong The minus's: The cameras crap in lowlight Only 2 to 3 days of battery for me (Its not as bad as the blackberry storm that lasts less than a day) No adobe flash You need to take care of it I've scratched the screen when I put my keys in the same pocket and the shiney black back is peppered with scratches, so its not worth £400 more like £50 Try texting whilst mashed you'll get to know the backspace button very well The Yahoo weather is way off even as I write this its telling me that its raining when its sunny outside I've had to remember my phone number as it doesn't tell you If I think of anything else I'll let you know
dirtydog Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Well ive just ordered an iPhone 3GS upgrade and a HTC Hero offline today I want to stay on O2 for coverage reasons so ill be selling the iPhone as soon as I get it to use the Hero. The iPhone is a great phone but the Hero looks like it will be just fantastic (plus I dont like to follow the crowd too much) and Android is very intriguing not to mention exciting whilst it gets deveolped further. If anyones interested the in the iPhone 32GB 3GS in BLACK or my old O2 XDA Orbit II (in a few weeks) then maybe send me a PM? By the way have you seen Google Streetview using the compass on the HERO!?!?!?!? WOW
Ric_ Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 @riskybrden: I think one of your pros can also be seen as a con... I don't like iTunes... personal preference I suppose. Everything syncs with everything now - I sync me Touch Pro2 with Gmail for instance - so it's not really an issue.

Now if only I could find out how to change the text received tone it would be perfect! Anyone know?
