BrianG Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I travel around half a dozen primary schools so I've got: Laptop External USB HHD CD Wallet for software and driver CD's a couple of USB sticks a few notebooks ( paper type ) In the car i've got: An inkjet printer ( cant remember why) a couple of switches as spares tool case miles of network cable few power cables a couple of hard disks some blank CD's a broken CD drive oh.. and a hedge trimmer.. but that's not got alot to do with work, unless i'm having a really bad day

Unless of course I'm specifically doing the rounds and know I will need to fix something, I carry an old projector bag with: ::: 3 USB Pens configured as build disks (RM) ::: 1 External floppy with PC Check and floppy build disk (RM) ::: Variety of (cheap) screwdrivers ::: Variety of zip ties ::: About 6 mice ::: Pliers (no idea why, never used them yet!) ::: Cutters (easier than scissors to cut the zip ties) ::: Super glue ::: Compressed air ::: Whiteboard cleaning foam (brilliant for dirty, dusty PC cases) ::: Hand towel (for cleaning the cases) ::: Couple of network/USB cables

Jamman960 Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) When I was an onsite engineer working all over the country I had a box full of bits in the boot of my car - usually a few PSU's, heatsinks, hard drives, floppy drives and associated cables. I'd also have a switch & lots of patch cables for imaging... its never fun to turn up at a small primary with no easily reachable switches and 16+ laptops to image In my bag I'd usually have: Laptop Usb drive Fibre patch cable Cat5 patch cable kettle lead mouse Crimper & Punchdown tool lots of blank cd/dvd's Philips screwdriver USB-Serial adapter(absolute life saver - I couldn't believe how often I needed to use this) Serial cable Removable floppy drive(presuming I hadn't left it attached to a server somewhere....) Lots of rack nuts/bolts - no matter how many times I mentioned it these were never shipped to site before I got there argh Edited July 8, 2009 by Jamman960
sted Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 terrabyet external hdd for back ups 320gb usb hdd for ghost images and stuff too big to fit on my pen drive 8gb pen drive screwdrivers cat 5 leads network kit (so cat5 ends crimper punch tool for patch cabs) toolkit with allen keys sockets hammer etc (well its really for the car but is occasionally useful) 150w power invertor so i can work on laptops in the car if needs be as teachers seem to think flat batteries dont affect techs yes i can install the pile of software in the 5 mins batery you have left grrrr) aero duster captive nuts usb floppy drive multi card reader

alextreadwell Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 in my pockets HP Ipaq hw6851 mobile phone pda 5 usb keys - 1 4gb ghost boot, 1 4gb xpboot, 1 1gb drivers and software, 1 16gb for copying images on to pcs 1 2gb blank at mo in case others get full big bunsh of keys that no longer fit anything but make me look important! in my bag (Epson projector) 500gb firewire and usb HDD, lots of cables usb firewire and network patch, laptop hard drive in caddy (hard drive not working),firewire card, sound card, bluetooth gps adapter for Ipaq satnav, xp cd and ghost cd, 4 assorted screw drivers, assorted RAM and a bottle on water in car 1 switch with gbic slot as a spare, and mouldy sandwitches that I haven't had time to eat lol

Luckily the caretaker knew me well enough to keep a pack of cable ties handy for whenever I came begging (caretakers are an invaluable source of things like that) and I usually "borrowed" a pair of childs scissors from the nearest classroom whenever the need arose for them
Sirbendy Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 On my person: My keys, my SLT (heh) door release swipe, my 4gb and 16gb cruzer, with utilities, portable apache/SQL server onboard, a walking stick if I need it, my Acer Aspire One netbook, and my OPCOM Vauxhall interface unit (quite a few staff have Vx inclusing me, so I keep it to hand), and my iPaq Voice messenger/mobile. In the car: Full toolkit, gas soldering iron, lumphammer, WD40, jumpleads..sometimes handy for computers or staff vehicles.

Ditto, pretty much except for my trusty CD roms with such things as antivirus, whiteboard software etc, and an A4 folder with some notes on how to do things! (for those moments when you can't remember something really simple). I also have some other random cables such as VGA or USB, a powered USB hub, a load of screws and other stuff sitting in the bottom of the bag. I also have a pink hole punch - no, I don't know why either. Cable ties are a great idea though In the car, I have a pickaxe, but that is a different story
