Proxy On Proxy Off App

I wrote this small app that sits nicely in the top right hand corner of your screen as some of the teachers were using there laptops at home and at school.

 

It gives them the option to turn add and remove their proxy settings with out having to remember how to do it manualy (as we all know some teachers arent the most technical people).

 

I also intergrated an admin logon button as some of the senior teachers were having laptops that are not on the network.. but they still wanted to run things like PARS and SIMS when in school.

 

I am going to put together a .NET version of this soon which have just the proxy on proxy off buttons.

NOTE: Once you have downloaded the file Unzip it to your desktop then run Quick Install.bat.

 

You will then need to go to the C:\UtilBar directory and edit th VBS files to suit your network.

 

 

It may be useful for some of you or it may seem a complete waste of time.

 

Let me know if you are interested in the newer (.NET) version as it will prompt me to get off my backside and write it.

I happened to be looking for something similar today and came across this freeware

I have thought for a while it would be useful to change network settings based on physical location, like OSX has done for ages.

 

This sounds like it does just that. Haven't had a chance to test it yet. But could be useful if it's more than just the proxy that needs changing.

Thanks for the replys so far anyway, I do realise I have re-invented the wheel though haha. Even still, it passed some time and if it helps someone out at the same time thats a bonus.

I've been using Proxy Switcher Lite, which is free and works well - BUT only if the teachers/kids actually remember to switch when necessary (and don't delete/turn off/remove settings from the app). This software is at least a bit more "visible".

I've been looking at this; is this using a proxy.pac? I've copied scripts folk have posted here and elsewhere, but can only get the http proxy to autoswitch. Is there some way to do them all?

 

What I would like is for the proxy to automatically turn on for all protocols at school, but off for home.

I am using a pac file that will set the proxy with no user intervention.

That sounds like a good idea, although like anything possibly has flaws and doesn't teach teachers that they need to make sure there proxy's are in etc. Plus teachers tend to pass applications between each other to resolve issues, where as something thats not seen is harder to explain.

 

Just my take, and also the browser will not require a restart when turning the proxy on or off.

I think ProxyPac requires you to restart the browser before it takes effect.

If you download it and extract the rar ( I think its the one I am thinking of that includes 2 registry files and a batch file or two )

 

If you ammend both registry files using notepad you should be able to ammend the text to change the server and ports etc and it should do the trick.

 

Then its just a case of creating 2 short cuts ( one to each bat file ) in the all users profile or where you need them and give them there own icons and the rest should be fine.

EAZProxySwitcher doesn't appear to put the IP in for the School Network though?

I'm assuming this requires RUN AS administrator on Vista?

I don't see the point of this. If you use a pac file, you can load it from your webserver and have it determine whether or not you are on the school network. It works on IE, FF, opera, safari.

as mentioned by other poster, it requires no user interaction.

 

I don't mean to be too negative, but what is the point of ProxyCLC other than a wheel reinvention of a problem that was fixed years back.

I see where your coming from CyberNerd, just simply making a point to how easy it is to have alternatives. Sometimes its nice to see how the wheel was inventied .

PS: Not all companys use proxy.pac for one reason or another mate.

I use Firefox (automatically detect setting) at home and internet explorer at work with proxy setting because some of the school software runs better with it for the teachers.

Will have a look at the bat file
