I’m in exactly the same boat as you… Eclipse.net and over drive Though I have two primary sites also using junior.net But I have to say overdrive and the whole process is completely frustrating. First of all the setup comes via the USA, so they can only help me set it up after 2pm in the afternoon. I got all my techies together what I thought was going to be a very technical process… but 5 minutes into the process I asked her what was the point of this conference call, as I thought it was some technical configurations. All it was is part description of the overdrive market place and the other part filling in a form. She then asked me when I would like to go live with it to which I said NOW, to which she responded she need to get the website setup for me and there is training of staff, the normal time frame is about 8 weeks. This means it will of taken 3 months from placing purchase order to actually using the product. I’ve yet to complain to MLS, but there is a lack of communication between the two companies Overdrive wanted information from me that only MLS have since they are hosting eclipse.net for me. I would say now if you’re thinking about overdrive…. Avoid….

(twin--turbo) yes we will be using GPO to restrict year 10's and 11's as there laptops stay in school. 6th form were still in discusions regarding what the school wants... we then highlight what possible security threats or problems to the network.... as long as the school understands we then comply to there requirements.... we used to not allow staff to install software to laptops, now we do, it may be a case of using that restricted policy a kinda (power user access or something... still thinking about it at the moment) (Riki) the photocoping and securing printing was the only real viable option to our problems initally, but it seems other suggestions have come along, and we have settled with the null printer as default printer. this is working really well it just needs some tweaks. so no expense of buying or leasing any more photocopiers, faculties /departments cover the cost of toner. the only real over head is to the technician replacing toner or fixing printer issues liked jammed paper etc..... (robyholmes) i like that and may also look at that, though our problem is now covered with the null printer option as mentioned in one of my above responses. the only problem with it is that it still replies on the student selecting the correct printer for the room, but at least they wont be pressing print and not checking which printer, here there forced to choose the printer.

My senior techie managed to resolve our problem by the following: Getting students to install the printer drivers, by accessing them from the web printing list.... once they select the printers they require for the subject they can install the drivers themselves. that covers geting the printer drivers installed, so no waiting around for gpo deployment as the user is making the choice of installing the driver when they have the laptop turned on. every users laptop will have a null printer set as default. when they come to print they choose the printer for the room there in and can print. in gpo a schedule will run which will disconnect the printers and make them default to null printer at the end of every period. or even during periods depending how many schedules we set to disconnect.... to be able to print again they will need to select the printer if the schedule has disconnected the printer. null printer goes no where it drops it in a printer queue and then deletes it. it all seems to work very well in testing, its just now a matter of fine tuning the amount of disconnects in a period, some form of notification to the user that the printer has defaulted to a null printer and that they need to select a printer.

looked at the no mapping of any printers and having the dafualt as you say, the problem is and this is from a trial with a static classroom.... students will pick the wrong printer, even odd teachers make that mistake..... The AP was also an idea, but without further investigation, on the surface there seemed to be a flaw that they might not all be connected to the same AP. Every student has a laptop in school but how do we setup printers. Here is a dilemma that is facing us.... Students of 6th form and Year 11’s and 10’s are being issued with a laptop each (windows 7) 6th form will be taking their laptops off site and home, and as yet we’ve not decided what level of access they will have but it won’t be as restrictive as the years 11s and 10s. The dilemma were facing is the printing, as student will be moving around the school, how can we overcome the problems of students printing to different printers. What we want to avoid is this: English students’ print to English printer, but some students have forgotten to select the correct printer. Now maths printer receives some of the English students work. Some English students don’t seem to be getting any work on the English printer so they keep resending, not thinking to check the settings to see what the default printer is set at. What we need to have is a way that students don’t make the above mistake Toner is charged to the departments, so maths won’t want to be picking up the cost for English etc.... We have several ideas but all of them need exploring for possible flaws, and welcome any advice. Option 1: Buy a network photo copier for each year group and place these around the school, each student will have a print code. This is something we already do with staff... Pros: we have tabs on printing, and only one printer would have to be mapped per year group.. Cons: which departments will pick up the cost of printing, paper and leasing of photocopier? Students may be leaving lessons to collect work from photocopiers, queues may develop as students input their print codes at the photocopier. Option 2: Internet printing is being investigated by my senior techie tomorrow; neither of us have explored this before. Option 3: The reason behind me making this post, since i saw this as a possibility to our problem, and its been welcomed by my systems manager as a possibility. Solution Example Student with laptop goes to lesson, Maths with Mr T period 1. Student needs to print out graphs so they send to printer in classroom; laptop tells them no printer driver installed, not active, no permissions, choose printer etc... Whatever warning is required. Student realizes that they now need to access the GUI interface for printing which is found on the desktop of the laptop. GUI Interface The gui interface is designed with the option of typing in the printer code and clicking connect. The interface loads the script which maps the printer as the default printer, the student can then print. The script only remains active for 10 minutes and then if its need again the code has to be entered again. After 10 minutes it disconnects the printer. Gui interface backend Backend script could be configurable to allow time out adjustment and change of printer codes and adding and taking away printers. Interface would be compiled into exe, flash app or of similar with script embedded, or in the case of year 10 and 11 it would not be accessible. How do students get the code? The code will be displayed on the front of the printer and on lament A4 landscape in the classrooms. How easy will it be for students to input the wrong code? Rather than use TC-Print01 and then 02, or other forms of distinguishing that makes it slightly easy for students to remember. The code can be irregular so that students will be forced to look at the printer room code on the wall. An example would be: TC-mathsprint01 would be inputted as - 35927 TC-mathsprint02 would be inputted as - 196874 Tcmathsprint03 would be inputted as - 769252 Cons: The flaw would be that students might just copy and paste the codes to a desktop document, and rather than look up at the code on the wall will just copy and paste from desktop. But i would guess this would be less likely to happen if the codes are fairly short... it’s easier looking up and typing 3, 4 or possibly 5 digits. Student moves to another classroom and needs to print? A student leaves maths and goes to Music, the chances are from leaving one room to the next and getting around to printing the 10 minutes will of expires and the code will have to be input in again. Since we are in a new room the student does not have access to the previous code and therefore sees the new code on the wall and enters this. This now maps the printer in music. The final question i got asked about option 3 was, how long would it take someone to create the script and what would the cost me..........? so if anyone wants to answer that or offer there services great.......

I didn’t want to complicate my post, but to give you the background this is really only a temporary solution as we were in the process of setting up a new domain but with massive amounts of IT hardware to now implement we have had to put our single domain on hold. Once everything has settled down come sometime after November 2012, we will then have our single domain and exchange server 2010 with possible DAG. this solution allows us to keep the current exchange servers and accounts... thanks question: I may be back with another question shortly, as having tried something similar i did get an error about legacy and it would not setup the email address policy. but i will need to replicate that arror again.....

I’m trying to work out if this is possible, and rather than spend hours doing trial and error, I thought the best thing would be to ask for some advice.... Here is my scenario We have 3 schools = 3 domains all with exchange servers and trusts between the sites. School A = Exchange 2007 School B = Exchange 2007 School C = Exchange 2010 A new domain is to be purchased Example mydomain.net Requirements: All staff on all 3 sites will need to receive the new domain as there new email address. I can't seem to get the X to vanish from the setup page when inputting the Domain UPN / AD information. When i select the box for groups the Active Direcotr brower opens but nothing appears in it and the cross remains in UPN when i would expect to see a green tick mark. Intially i had some issuses with this and removed the standardpoint refrence in the web.config file at the bottom of the page, as well as a no graphics appear which i removed the mime svg reference. I've installed 7.6 and followed your video instructions. and I have Extranet Install which works fine and connects to AD fine, ive used the same username and password as the one i use for extranet and still nothing and I have even created another account to try with no luck. I could process the install again so i can run the program that will show the errors, but im guessing its permissions somewhere... This is my third attempt and trying 7.6 with no luck

I've also used this but it was a 3 way solution. 1 teache i know uses team viewer but leaves there laptop left on at work, the other teacher I know purchased ignition and does the same, however I'm not too keen to have these laptops left on at work and soon impero will control all machines in the school which will shut them down in the evening. The other thought is possibly installing HAP (home Access Plus) on a server at work and then using a browser to connect to it. but for me the simplicity of file browser is enough at this stage, whats a couple of quid....

would also suggest you read there site if your planning on getting file browser I quote: FileBrowser is able to connect to a wide variety of SMB file servers, but some are not compatible. Before purchasing FileBrowser we recommend that you try our free NetPortalLite app.

you can view documents, images, play music, pdf. and yes you can copy to and from your shared drives to the ipad. you can create folders. there was a few things it couldnt do that i found annoying especially on my head teachers i pad, as i installed one of the office products on there and there was no way to save a document typed in the product to the file browser folders. but that was back in November last year, so i would hope by now other products are working with file browser. I need to do some updates to file browser as im a little behind....

I can’t seem to get staff to access the booking system and helpdesk; I can remove and show the icons but when they try to access it the windows popup box appears for password authentication. I guess this is a permission issue, as initially logging into the HAP is fine, accessing mapped drivers and user’s home documents is fine. If I login as myself who is a domain admin, I can go everywhere. I also tried giving the staff access to the booking system admin rights hoping that might at least get me into the booking system. But that didn’t work. If this is a permission issue, would this be on the extranet folders, in the web config file or somewhere in with IIS7 Have to say I’m impressed so far...thanks

I think you need to check this because I had an incident at work so I contacted my local Authority who said I can not look at anyones email even students, but I could ask them to show me there email account if they refused I would then have to see the Head of School who would then need to esculate it to the local Authroity who would then give approval for the process. I could how suspend the account. I then asked if i could put this in an agreement and told no since its part of data protection and i think child protection. If any parents, staff or students challenge you looking at email, it could be senior management or ICT Technician who might find themselves in court.

Looks good Seems like some annoyed members here, it looks nothing like a wii remote other than its length, reminds me of our remote mouse we give to staff for power point presentations. The button configurations are nothing like the wii and look better thought out, the only decent buttons on the wii are A and B I hate it when games ask me to press button – or + or 1 or 2. Even more laughable when I have to turn the remote on its side and the + button becomes the main playing button. No one is being forced to use it and just like the eye toy it opens up a realm of family interactivity that even granny can play. I would like to think I will be purchasing more than one, but I’m guessing these will be at Sony ridicules prices.

I have been trying to put a powered on machine into my virtual environment without success, using VMware Standalone Convertor 4.0.1. I have a Terminal server 2008 which has a power issues, as a backup precaution so I can commence physical work on the server, and so it can still be used I want to drop it into my VMware Vcentre 4 system. Accessing the VMware Standalone convertor isn’t a problem, putting the information into where my source and destination need to be isn’t a problem. The issue seems to be when I run the conversion, after around a minute it gives me the following message. FAILED: A system error encountered during an operation. I thought i would try and transfer this server to my NAS drive, and it completes perfectly. I then thought ok i will extract from my NAS drive and place in my Virtual environment that way, but again errors were produced only this time it was. FAILED: Unable to connect to the virtual disk I do have massive log files, but struggling to understand where it’s going wrong, I just thought someone else might have encountered this, or suggestions. My next step is to try and import another server or desktop computer, or try standalone convertor version 4.0. The virtual environment is Vcentre 4 (vsphere) thanks
