localzuk Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 So, thought I'd run a poll to gauge what the community is up to. When do you think you will be migrating your school(s) to Windows 11?
paulkerton Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 We aren't, really. Only those that absolutely need Windows 11 will get it. By EOL, 97% of the school will be Chrome OS. 1
Guest ZFarnworth Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 So, thought I'd run a poll to gauge what the community is up to. When do you think you will be migrating your school(s) to Windows 11? In the next year I’ll move up the chain from windows 10. The current problem is systems not being up to spec. I’ve upgraded my admin machine and it works great but missing windows 10 I think
Cat_Jam148 Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 I can see myself pushing Windows 11 once it's had a couple of 'feature' updates, inevitably patching back in features that were taken out. Not too concerned about specs, we're due a refresh on most of our desktops over the next year or so.
synaesthesia Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Only when requirements are there; i.e. when windows 10 is no longer suitable because its EOL, no longer secure or no longer otherwise suitable. I don't expect that will be anytime soon, and I would certainly question anyone who's looking at making the move immediately! 1
hardtailstar Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Half if not all of our machines are not supported. Will need to spend a lot on PCs to upgrade to Windows 11. 3
thebatman Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Unless there is a need, we will stick with 10 until EoL. We may roll out 11 to a small area to see how it goes and testing ect.
Chaniel Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Unless there is a need, we will stick with 10 until EoL. We may roll out 11 to a small area to see how it goes and testing ect. Precisely this I imagine after a few feature updates I'll upgrade my own PC to test things but I have no immediate plans.
bald_pig Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 I'll start before Win10 is EOL, but will wait for 11 to have matured, even though it's basically 10 with a reskin.
Sheridan Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 We were planning a high chrome OS with Windows 11 mix, but it depends what direction the mat sends us as they are pushing 365 as the platform
PrimaryNetMan Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 We aren't, really. Only those that absolutely need Windows 11 will get it. By EOL, 97% of the school will be Chrome OS. Same as Paul here too. Our only Windows machines left are back office and aging staff laptops that won't be replaced when they die. None are new enough to be supported so will most like roll out as Windows machines are replaced over the next 12-18 months
chazzy2501 Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Unlike other versions of Windows, 11 requires hardware changes, so it'll be until when hardware refreshes and most PCs are able to take 11.
msi_school Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 I will be following the same timetable as I did with XP, 7 and 10. I will let all the early adopters find the issues and then schedule the move to end about 12 months before EOL to allow for slippage.
MartinT Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 I can see us starting from next year, putting new machines in place with W11 and upgrading the last two years' of purchased machines to W11.
Guest ZFarnworth Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 I can see us starting from next year, putting new machines in place with W11 and upgrading the last two years' of purchased machines to W11. I started using windows 11 on my admin machine, and I came to the conclusion that it’s not ready for production and for in my environment. so going to leave it for a year or so and take another look.
localzuk Posted October 18, 2021 Author Posted October 18, 2021 Looking at the responses so far, it seems my "wait for a long while" is the right way to go. I'm thinking at least 2 years here.
Oaktech Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 Starting now. I have 15% of one site active on it already, no issues. People have been way more receptive to it than they were going from 7-10.
TravisG Posted October 29, 2021 Posted October 29, 2021 Well, before Windows 11 hit GA, I ran a report and found 560 out of 870 machines that can't run Windows 11 (mostly 6th and 7th gens). I am testing it, but need to get printers working. I don't care about UI changes, because that's normal. I'm targeting Fall 2022 when I acutally deploy it. Definitely need to get some real-world testing, and have a few volunteers. One thing I'm looking forward to is WSL2 and finally getting rid of dual-booting.

I’m only running it on my admin machine and my admin laptop.
ITGuyNW Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 I'm going to update Windows 10 to 21H2 sitewide when that appears, then when that starts getting towards the end of its support window, I will probably look at it then. No rush really.
Disaster Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 I'll consider putting it out in September 2022 or maybe an IT room for testing. I've got it running on a 2013 (8 years old) HP. Note: I think Windows PC health Checker for W11 will automatically state your PC is not compatible unless you have TPM switched on, and this took two BIOS updates in my case, so I can't see spec being an issue for most of us!?!
CHiLL Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 One of my CPD targets for this year is to evaluate Windows 11. We have no intention of deploying it in the 2021-2022 academic year, but just to give us some idea of what we can expect, in terms of supported hardware, missing features, things that will need locking down, etc.
Dan2025 Posted November 8, 2021 Posted November 8, 2021 Wait a good while I think, then roll out it slowly and test the water with a teacher or two that will play around a bit.
Oaktech Posted November 8, 2021 Posted November 8, 2021 Just a quick question: have you had to make any gpo changes with windows 11? I’m only running it on my admin machine and my admin laptop. A few minor ones Registry hacks to remove the default icons on the taskbar and to remove the terminal shortcut from the right click menu. I've also chosen to abandon redirected start menus for staff, but they remain for students and they work. I've also removed most of the restrictions on placement of taskbar, pinning and the enforced start menu layout for staff. It will work for staff without any changes but they won't get the full benefit of the new start menu experience. Interestingly the complaints I've had most are dislike of the small copy/paste/cut/rename icons and the white taskbar. I've managed to create and enforce a custom theme to address people's dislike of the white taskbar - it's on by default, but optional for people to turn off. I'm also considering a reg hack to restore the original right click menu, but I'm holding out for a bit in the hope people will get used to it. 1
Guest ZFarnworth Posted November 14, 2021 Posted November 14, 2021 I’ve deployed it out to a few of the offices and had good responses, no problems yet [emoji1]
