When are you planning to move your school(s) to Windows 11?

gen 4 i5s mainly onsite here. I still have a dozen core2 duos in daily use. W11 is the least of my worries at the moment.

As with others, slowly moving as many as possible to ChromeOS/Neverware. We'll deal with specialist software when it becomes an issue. We are in the process of tendering for/moving to a cloud MIS, so that will reduce the need for Windows by quite a bit.

 

I'm not sure at this stage much of our specialist software or PCs will support 11.

We just invested in 350 laptops for staff. So I asked dell to send them with windows 11. May as well save ourselves the job.

I will also deploy windows 11 on any new kit that arrives. Otherwise I'm just setting us up to do more work in the future.

 

So far, even the dock seems to be accepted more than I thought it would.

 

We have loads of legacy kit across our schools, so I guess it will be as we replace. Hopefully in a couple years we will have most things replaced and on windows 11.

Luckily my workplace is getting a whole new building with new PCs so we're thinking of moving to win11 by next year.

 

Already running it on my Office PC with minimal issues. However the prospect of explaining the new right click context menu to some users is already giving me nightmates.

Do you mean 7010? As that's a very old model in terms of meeting Windows 11 requirements.

 

The latest ones would be 7080/90s~ etc

Yeah, I’ve upgraded it and it seems to run quite fast for what I’m doing but thinking upgrading to 11 I’m only doing General IT Tech stuff.

W11 runs well but I've not tried RSAT AD tools on one yet.

 

There is also the question of running something different from the users. I often send screenshots and helpsheets to users to help with tasks and that's not going to work with a different OS.

RSAT AD Tools on Win11 seem to work really well currently. Having a different OS to users has caused some issues for me but I just connect to a win10 machine and screenshot what I need using ShareX.

Over the summer we bought a bunch of refurbs to replace our decrepit devices (i3 3xxx, 4GB DDR3) machines. The best we could get for our budget was i5 6xxxx devices that aren't 11 compatible.

It turns out that the Celeron processors in the laptops the DfE gave us are compatible, but then again, the laptops the DfE gave us are barely fit to prop open a window, let alone support newer builds of Windows.

 

My impressions of Win11 are actually generally positive, outside of the stupid tiles replacement needing InTune to modify at all (there's bound to be a workaround though) and I have no objections in principle to migrating, it's just not possible right now, I don't have the money to make it possible, and I really don't want to mix environments because that will send our less technically-capable users completely west.

 

That being said, our Chromebook usage has been increasing without any complaints.

Honestly, at this point, if it weren't for SIMS, I reckon we could run this school entirely on G Suite. In principle, of course, not in practice. There'd be far too much user re-training needed. Far too many staff are married to MSOffice here and would have an aneurysm trying to figure out anything else. A good handful of them still make files in MSOffice, upload them to Drive/Classroom, and then the kids download them to their own user area and open them locally

We aren't, really. Only those that absolutely need Windows 11 will get it.

By EOL, 97% of the school will be Chrome OS.

Company environment here but for devices off the network we use intune/smartdeploy to deploy our our ops, but we have a few devices off our network so it’s pretty hard to deploy out to devices that aren’t locally with us. Edited January 10, 2022 by Deangelo_21

The trust I work for basically has said we wont be using any of that anymore. They have removed all Smartboards and just use whiteboards with a projector. As for other software they are looking at web based alternatives. However at the moment there isnt much on the market. I think it will be at least 5/6 more years before we'd be fully ChromeOS as at the moment the biggest pain is SIMS.

We don't do our computing through Pearson, so that I can't answer.

However, I know that AQA and JCQ are working on digital exams and Pearson in the US fully support ChromeOS for examinations.
