People are just terrible at statistics.

 

Do we know the long term risks of a vaccine? nope

Do we know the long term risks of covid? yep, a lot of death, really screws up your long term chances being dead

 

Do you want to live in a society with food and roads and very little crime? Then stop being an arse, or go live by yourself on an island

I do despise that term 'live with covid'. What does it mean? I suspect those who use it mean "abandon masks, testing, self isolation and social distancing as fast as possible", but it could also be interpreted to mean "live with masks, testing, self isolation and social distancing".

The article quotes "a senior Whitehall source". The same was true in October from "a senior Whitehall source". I wonder if it was the same one? In October it drew criticism because case numbers were running at over 30,000. Given current numbers, I don't see it changing in the immediate future. Of course, when it says free, it isn't really. We all pay, it's just a question of when and how. Related, who knew most employers stopped getting free texts last July, bar a few recent exceptions? I didn't until today's news.

Novak Djokovic has won his appeal against being denied a visa to enter Australia.

 

Djokovic has been detained at an immigration facility in Melbourne since Thursday morning after his visa was cancelled following scrutiny of the medical exemption for the Covid vaccine he had secured to travel to the Australian Open, the first tennis major of the year.

 

The Serbian’s legal team filed papers to appeal against border control’s original decision confirming that Djokovic tested positive for Covid last month and recovered. He used that as grounds in applying for a medical exemption to Australia’s strict vaccination rules.

 

And following a lengthy hearing on Monday, Judge Anthony Kelly quashed the visa cancellation and ordered the Australian Government to pay legal costs and release Djokovic from detention within half an hour.

 

The decision means Djokovic, a nine-time champion in Melbourne, now has the chance to defend his 2021 title although government counsel Christopher Tran notified the court that the minister for immigration, Alex Hawke will now consider whether to exercise a “personal power of cancellation” of Djokovic’s visa that could ultimately see him banned from Australia for three years...

Surely that seems a little excessive?

I mean I don't really have many thoughts one way or the other about the guy, and I couldn't care less about tennis, and as much as I'm all 100% for everyone who can be being vaccinated.. If their government has exemptions, and he meets those exemptions, and then the courts say he meets those exemptions..

 

Surely it's a bit vindictive to cancel his visa anyway?

(as much as he has been a git about complaining about being in the same hotel as asylum seekers.. or was that someone else?)

The main problem of the story, it wasn't always reported fully. In lost of articles I read there were missing information. I heard the full story on the radio , from local the journalists:

- his exemption wasn't issued by the federal government (home office), but by the state of Victoria - that should not have happened, as the national restriction of Australia don't count having been infected with the Covid in the last 6 month as an exemption

- the case wasn't exactly won, but Australian gov lawyers decided to drop it, as there were problem with procedures, how Djokovic was treated by the border control staff.

 

On the personal note, not sure exactly why he doesn't get vaccinated, but it is not a very good look for him.

My daughter's best friend's husband died of Covid yesterday

He was 30

He wasnt vaccinated not for any particular reason but just because he was too lazy to sort it out

So now she is on her own because he was a bit of an idiotic man who was also hugely overweight

I am sorry to hear this news being a young widow is horrible.

 

It so unfortunate people do not go out of the way to get the vaccine. I traveled 50 minutes to get my first two. I was then offers my local centre for the booster.

The Aussie authorities have not handled this well and we will have to see how things proceed, but questions remain. No matter the outcome, this will rumble on.

 

Given recent events, which country in the world suggests to their citizens that they go and mix widely after a positive PCR test. Remember, after he tested positive test in June 2020 he (sort of) apologised for organising a tournament and spreading the virus. It doesn't look like he's learnt any lessons and I'm afraid as a role model beyond tennis, he's failed utterly.

I have avoided really discussing my personal feelings/opinions on this thread or in public generally, but I feel I'm in the company of 'mostly sane adults' and I'll also be forgiven for not reading the whole thread hopefully (I did read the opening post about being nice and not political though)... so, forgive me if any of these points have been covered somewhere in those 338 pages.

 

I briefly saw on the news this morning about the lady who is keeping her child from school (and the fact that fines or imprisonment are threatened) and the figures she quoted on child deaths and 'long Covid' (figures that could not be corroborated at the time by the presenters or even Dr. Hilary as these figures are apparently not published)... were quite surprisingly high considering the previous general feeling about this mainly being only deadly to the old or those with underlying health conditions.

 

It confused me that the presenters (who may have just been playing devil's advocate or trying to get her to say something controversial) were asking what her problem was about children being in school. Have these people ever had a child (or one that has gone to school)? Has their child ever got nits? No amount of hand washing or opening windows will stop the children congregating (let alone the fact that 30 of them are in a small room together most of the day without masks - and it is predominantly an airborne virus).

 

I do feel very bad for the teachers, in my opinion (even bearing in mind that Covid is reported to be a 'very mild' disease in children), schools are still a breeding ground and are right at the top of transmission environments. We had done reasonably well previously (we are a small school) with only the odd teacher or TA being off, but when returning from the Christmas break at least 10 staff had reported testing positive days after we broke up for the holidays.

 

I have a few Covid deniers/ant-vaxxers/conspiracy theorists on my Facebook (don't ask... mainly anti-government/old punk friends from my youth) but I don't really see any validity in anything they post (although some of what they say could 'possibly' be true). Yes this is a 'new' vaccine, but the underlying technology is not new. Yes there have been mistakes with all sorts of medicines and vaccines in the past and indeed there are quite a few reports of even the Covid vaccine producing reactions that result in death. I'm not sure honestly if I would change my mind if I was personally related to someone who had died from the vaccine, if I would be the ethical/altruistic/empathetic person that puts the good of the world above my own personal tragedy... and against the fact that vaccines have all but eradicated many previous endemic diseases.

 

They also don't want to be told to wear masks (muzzled) by the Fascist state... or told where and when they can go for a beer...

 

I also see a lot of misunderstanding from them about why you would want to be vaccinated (to protect others, not yourself) and why children should be treated as a major source of the spread. Initially the argument was that children being infected didn't matter because for them it appeared to be a mild disease, but nobody seemed to be taking into account the fact of onward transmission to other more vulnerable people in their family. A few of them say that they have even had Covid and recovered as they are young (ish) and fit with a good immune system, so what's the problem...? I do still find it quite a mind blower that the same virus can cause a disease in one person to be asymptomatic and yet cause another's death (even those who would be considered not 'at risk' if you took 'influenza' as a comparable disease).

 

Unvaccinated people also seem to fail to take into consideration that more infected people raises the likelihood of producing a variant. This may or may not be a good thing as I have read that a lot of virus variants tend to produce milder disease as they 'evolve' (aka - don't kill your host or at least not until they've transmitted onward), but of course this may not always be true, there are many virus' that have been around a long time and not evolved to not kill their host (but I guess not many of them have reached pandemic proportions) the earlier concerns though was that it could mutate into a vaccine beater... I suppose you could counter argue that vaccines don't actually completely stop onward transmission/disease/death, but it at least helps...

 

Along with this goes the 'herd immunity' argument, but if the UK figure of 150,000 deaths is indeed factual (and that is WITH vaccines), I can't see anyone really putting that forward anymore if they have an ounce of human decency/integrity... I mean look at Spanish Flu deaths, that is what is needed to get herd immunity...

 

For me personally, although I work in a school I am mostly cut off from interacting with children and able to fend off teachers (politely) to a large degree. I don't go out, I don't have friends or family that I have to see (my mental health doesn't suffer from any of this as it is just actually how I lived before the pandemic). My OH isn't quite so lucky (although she can work from home) as she does the shopping and her mother is in and out of hospital for various reasons (so requires regular visits) and one reason that I'm being very careful at work and fully vaccinated and boosted. But I do look at the general infection rates with some kind of incredulity and wonder what all these people are doing everyday (rates peaking at c218,000 per day and these are only people that have tested and reported, so presumably a lot more)...

Some nutter mistook me for "being awake", dude, I'm so awake I sold my bed.

 

An hour later after I'd hit him with facts a few 100 times he stopped messaging me.

 

When the antivaxxer tries to argue both that dying within 28 days of getting covid shouldn't count, but dying within 28 days of getting covid vaccine should count.

 

Let's see 52 million get the vaccine, and let's say 0.1% of people naturally die in a month anyway. So that's 52000 dead. But according to the vaccine side effect website you pointed me to, 72 deaths have been correlated with the vaccine.

 

And there's 5.5 million dead from covid, but that counts anyone who just randomly died. So that's only 5.495 million people dead, that's fine then.

 

Also he really wanted us to be like Sweden, but strangely had no idea what happened in Sweden, like....schools closing, limits on numbers of people meeting, mask wearing, vaccination, working from home, etc etc.

 

Playing the internet on easy mode is relaxing.
