mikeprice Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Just been to Tesco - quite quiet and people behaving well - and shelves better stocked than the last few times I have been there people are funny though quite a few people wearing gloves - couple with masks weird when people go to the trouble of wearing gloves but happily wander around close to other people also annoying used the shop and scan (as usual) partly because it involves less people things damn thing wanted to do a check and when the lady did the check it came up with a screen no-one had seen before - and with no apparent title or message???????? so I had to go to a normal till anyway still the people in the queue were all keeping their distance -
jmak Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 (edited) Coronavirus (COVID-19): MOTs for cars, vans and motorcycles due from 30 March 2020 (gov.uk)And I had mine done this morning.... Edit: but mine was due on the 28th, so wouldn't have been exempt. Makes it slightly less annoying. Edited March 25, 2020 by jmak

Ketlane Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Sainsbury's well stocked today with minor exceptions - broccoli, soap, though handwash was in stock. Cashier told me that the over-70s session had been completely manic, though. Local small shops well stocked. our village shop is increasing the number of lines on sale. Looks like things are calming down now and we just batten down the hatches for a while (the length of a "while" being a bit as unpredictable as a Microsoft "minute")
StevieM Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Modified Morrissey song titles and given a Coronavirus isolation slant: Oh, I can give you a whole slew of those! Panic (buying) Hand in (latex) glove You just haven’t caught it yet, baby Please, please, please let me get what I want (before you clear the shelves) Back to the old house (and stay there) ...and many, many more (Perhaps it’s a good time for the return of my old Smiths covers band, named after another song, ‘Still Ill’!) 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Local small shops well stocked. Shopping local has been a big success here. For those in the Preston area I suggest trying the farm shops around the edge of town. Honeywell's was well stocked with fresh meat, veg and cakes. Plus their access restrictions are to be commended. Max one person per car may enter. They've industrial sanitizer everywhere and they expect you to use if before picking anything up. Tills are manned, but you scan the barcode and load the bag, the gloved operator just there to do a receipt. They're also only taking contactless. Milkman has been on form too. Now getting a dozen eggs weekly in addition to milk and juice. 1

ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Used Honeywells for years, it's always good stuff if a bit more expensive! They're definitely not the cheapest around, but it is quality stuff and they have a consistency of supply that only comes from having your own farm.
Theblacksheep Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 quite a few people wearing gloves - couple with masks weird when people go to the trouble of wearing gloves but happily wander around close to other people When the online stores cannot deliver until late april, there is no choice but to venture into the shops.
mikeprice Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Keep seeing things about the wonderful response to the request for volunteers to help out delivering food etc Which is really annoying as I feel I should be going along and helping - but I can't afford to do so while my wife is 'shielding' I just feel a bit useless on that point - when they talk about shielding am I the only one who thinks of and think she should be going for a shower??? No??? just me probably 1

People in town are finally taking it seriously, though: crossing roads to avoid each other, waiting rather than squeezing through gaps in aisles etc. Though the worst people for ignoring distancing advice and stay at home advice (going out in couples etc.) are the over 70s! The whole country has literally shut down to protect them and they're trying to carry on as normally as possible. I know it's hard on them too, but good grief.
FishCustard Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 From my brief adventure to a local shop today: Good things - person in front of me in the queue was correctly observing physical distancing. Bad thing - even from 2 m back I could hear her phone conversation about "which essential oils she should use to treat COVID-19 if she or her child got it". Only in west London. 1
LeMarchand Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 L(E)A swapped over one site's filtering (a week late) so my remote software couldn't get out. Another site wasn't able to print and the printer support guys were understandably reluctant to send someone out. As there was little chance of being able to talk anyone through setting up an ad hoc client so I could get in and fix things at the first site, I headed in and ended up at my third site as well as the fix I found for the printing seemed a good shout for a separate problem they were having there. On my round trip the roads were quiet, but it was hardly "28 Days Later". As for the schools... One was fairly quiet with a skeleton staff, another had one staff member who was holding on for me, while the other had loads of kids in and 3 staff sat next to each other in the computer suite preparing resources - surely this should have been done at home?
hardtailstar Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 First afternoon working from home. Did all that training you're supposed to do but you ignore as other things are more important! Tomorrow starts all the documentation I need to write!
Dos_Box Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 Coronavirus (COVID-19): MOTs for cars, vans and motorcycles due from 30 March 2020 (gov.uk) Just picked my car up from the garage and the owner there tells me there may be a bit of a sting in the tail for this. If you choose not to get your MOT done on time, you have to inform your insurance company beforehand and they may bump up your premium for the period. 1
Dos_Box Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 (edited) This may not help everyone, but I read this on Money Saving Expert today - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2020/03/uk-coronavirus-help-and-your-rights/?utm_source=MSE_Newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=24-Mar-20-50599075-2990&utm_campaign=nt-hiya&utm_content=1 Mortgages are getting cheaper Exactly what happens as a result of the base rate cut depends on what type of mortgage you have: Tracker mortgages: Here you'll get the full 0.65 percentage-point base-rate cut (from the two cuts combined), worth roughly £40/month per £100,000 of mortgage outstanding. Use our Mortgage Calculator to see exact savings. Variable-rate mortgages: Here you should definitely see a cut, usually by the full 0.65 percentage points. See our lender-by-lender rate cuts table for amounts and timings. Fixed-rate mortgages: If you're on a fix, as the name suggests, your rate won't change during the fixed period. Rates for new mortgages, including fixes, are likely to drop over the next week, so check to see if you can get a cheaper deal on your existing mortgage. As Caroline tweeted: "@MartinSLewis thanks for the kick about mortgages – I've just saved almost £11,000 by changing to a fix for the next seven years." If you have the means and are after a mortgage (or can change yours), now may very well be the best time to jump on to these very low rates. Edited March 25, 2020 by Dos_Box
timbo343 Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 If anyone is interested, a doctor on Youtube (Dr John Campbell) is producing video blogs every day about the COVID19 virus. Here is his latest video - The past videos explain how the virus works, what is working and what isn't, etc.
FishCustard Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 A bit of humour - "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond came on the radio today, and one refrain is basically an anthem for what not to do during a pandemic. To wit... Hands, touching hands [nope - no thank you!] Reaching out... [er....] ...touching me, touching you [oh God definitely not!]
