do we get a mention oh forgot we have been ditched.

Yeah, no updates since 2014. What's up with that?

There is certainly some interesting reading in this thread, especially since our librarian is currently being pushed by MLS (the company) to update and change over to MLS Eclipse 'Reading Cloud'.

Yes quite a few disgruntaled users. Its the fact that we have been left with a product that the company dont care about. Using underhand tactics to get schools onto a cloud service that does not work correctly. But we are schools and they think we will accept it. They would not get away with this in the private sector.

Hi,

I have some information that I hope some of you might find useful. The last update for the locally installed system was version 16.11.21.1014. This was released in November 2016. There is another one due this year and I'll post on here when its available. It is still based on Silverlight and has an HTML5 front end, and has not yet made it to a complete HTML5 version. We have not yet made a decision on how or if we can provide a full HTML5 local version. As soon as we have I'll let you know and post on here.

If you want to check the versions you have and see if its the latest, then if you need to upgrade, just drop a line to [email protected] with your account number and the team will get the latest version to you.

Its certainly not good practice to bite too hard the hand that feeds you and having started to look at MSL I get the impression that they are doing just that along with a fuzzy pricing structure.

We all know school budgets are under pressure and MSL don't appear to appreciate their excessive / inflated quotes and marketing pressure actually makes their captive customers start to investigate their shortfalls in depth. If like us, then schools start to look at the other alternatives that are available in the market place, ask what facilities they really need and establish true running costs.

just got my renewal quote over 800 quid the documentation says price includes upgrades erm dont think so. i am not paying that no chuffin way. how dare you send that garbage out to customers of self hosted.

you have no respect for your customers

Hi Colin,

Glad you've taken this on board. However, this has been a problem for us for a long time so it's a shame that MLS are only just now appearing to take this seriously.

Complained about the speed, so they offered it being moved to a different hosted Azure server, sadly seems slower now. They're coming to do a remote session, but I'd love to see how fast it runs at MLS HQ.

Just been looking at https://accessitlibrary.com/ seems a nice fast system, anybody else seen/heard of it? They'll even move the MLS across. We're stuck with MLS until Feb, so just seeing if worth writing off these last few months and just shifting during the holidays.

How is the cost of this compared to MLS? I personally think the only advantage to the cloud version from them is that they can charge you an ongoing fee.

I work in KS1/2 and frankly pretty much all we need is a database with an easy to use front end that checks books in and out to staff/pupils. All the web/fancy features never get used (that may change in a few years, but I can't see it happening sooner).

We were quoted £1000 pa, which is £500 a year cheaper than MLS. I do agree with you though, I think our librarian would like a non-web version as the kids never use the online part anyway, but then maybe that's been down the the speed of MLS.

Thanks for the info. That's still £1000 more than our current rate as we're still on the non-browser version of MLS.

Wish we were! That actually worked :)

We originally moved to the online hosted MLS running on Silverlight 5 as part of BSF, and it always seemed sluggish at the best of times.

Since we've now been switched to the HTML5 version, our librarian has been complaining about the slowness of the system, and continuous warnings, and I had been asked by MLS to add the website to our AV (Sophos) (As MLS claimed AV could be scanning the scripts they use as they are now no longer hidden by Silverlight and this can slow the site down), which I have done, and it's not made any difference!

I've now been sent links to four different MLS support pages ranging from deleting temp IE files, to whitelisting URLs on our Proxy (Lightspeed).

Has anybody had any look with this?

OK, this is rearing it's ugly head again. It's now running slow again, and MLS are blaming our network speeds, AGAIN. I've whitelisted all of their URL's and it's still running like treacle. Has anybody been able to resolve this issue? Our librarian is being fobbed off by MLS support and just keeps sending us the emails with the same info, despite me explaining that we've done all of this and it's made no difference!

The amount of people who have left (or want to but are tied in) because of how painfully slow it is.. it must be nearly 100% of people. There is no way the problem is with every single school's network like they claim. Before we cancelled I tried it in the holidays with just my PC plugged into the router, direct connection with no filtering, bypassing the proxy etc and it was still ridiculously slow. If a 100Mbps line dedicated to a single PC isn't fast enough then what do they expect people to use?

We never resolved it so just left. In our case the librarian had stopped using it and reverted to an excel spreadsheet a couple of years prior (probably not long after we moved from the self hosted one) so it annoys me that they had a few years worth of renewals out of us with the product not even being used. When we changed librarians (and I found out about this) I tried to get it going again with the new librarian but it was just so slow, and support so useless (I had a ticket open for months about importing users from AD with no useful response) we just gave it up as a bad job.

With that level of competence, I wonder just how competent they are to store all that data...

The story I could tell you on that front is shocking. I would advise anyone on their hosted solution to take your own backups.

Lord this software is shockingly slow and I mean 10 mins to check a book back in to the system.

Awful, it won't be renewed next year I can tell you that much.

We are still using MLS (self hosted) but at least they have given up trying to persuade us to stay.

We are moving to AccessIT. Anyone got the inside skinny on them?

Looks like @enjay is using it http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-software/176611-library-systems-what-others-there-4.html#post1621822.

I'd be interested to see what @enjay has to say about it too as we are looking to move away from MLS too if the right product is out there. We are still OnPrem and have very little issues with it. Reading all these stories on here just makes matters worse though we were told they are looking at moving to azure for their platform.

Well this thread has made interesting reading. I've had contact from MLS (3 times) in the past 2 days again trying to push us onto the Reading Cloud system. We've said no for the past 3 years and they only told me on Wednesday that there would be no local HTML5 version despite promising it was on the way in the summer.

Those on hosted, is it still running slowly?

I can see no reason to move away from the local at the moment. I'm obviously worried about browser compatibility but we don't use it enough to justify paying so much for the cloud version.

Here's my response to the same issue:
