Hi all, I am looking for some fast A3 Inkjet printers and a fast A4 colour laser for our Art dept and naturally they all use macs. Has anyone got any recommendations? They need to be good quality and cope with high volumes. cheers..

Just as a followup (I work with pixellip!) Even if you disconnect the mac from the network the cert reappears. This is driving me nuts as it is causing issues with internet browsing.

Thanks - Yes I was figuring on getting some sort of mac storage or sticking the settings folder on a dedicated bit of storage.. The guy I got in to look at all this is basically saying that redirection of settings is not supported any more so I am, to say the least, confused!

Ok I am a Mac dummy but I have to integrate our Art and Music depts who use them, into our windows setup. We had a project a few years ago and we effectively managed to spoof it somewhat using Acronis and Centrify but I didn't run the project and the guy who did has long since gone. What we have managed to do is to make the Windows home directory, on our servers, the mac home directory as well. The idea was that a user should be able to see all their docs in one place - a simple enough idea in theory but it has caused lots and lots of issues. Mainly having mac homes on the server causes massive amount of I/O and effects the overall performance of the server in general. As some of our macs are aged as well this has impacted on their performance as well so no one is happy. I am hoping to have a budget to replace the macs - around 50 of them and in effect we need to start again. So what approach to take - I have been hearing things from some mac mates that you cant\shouldn't even have Apple home folders on any server and that they always need to be local. What we are doing is the usual stuff - in Art they are doing mainly iPhoto and Photoshop work (with no regard to file sizing or resolution obviously), most of the macs in music are using logic and there are some admin macs used for day to day office stuff. I am not after specific technical help here - just looking for a roadmap. What I want is for our mac users to login and have access to their Windows homes and shares and for them to be able to "roam" with their Apple homes/docs. Apparently this is next to impossible. Basically I have annoyed our mac users and it seems now that any solutions I offer them is going to be a bit awkward.. Happy to provide more details if needed but I am struggling to get get to grips to with this.. Thanks

We are still using MLS (self hosted) but at least they have given up trying to persuade us to stay. We are moving to AccessIT. Anyone got the inside skinny on them?

What would have been good would have to have been notified that you were not going to ship html 5 versions for self hosted customers. No wonder I have had about 30 calls about moving to hosted before someone had the guts to tell me that I wasn't going to get it. Now we are stuck on Silverlight with no upgrade path other than hosted. Seriously unhappy.

They have just announced that they will not release the HTML 5 version to self hosted. This after me bugging them for the last 8 months about getting rid of Silverlight and moving to HTML versions and them telling me that they would release it as soon as possible. So I now have no local upgrade path and a buggy Silverlight version that they have obviously no interest in developing. I will speak to my account manager later but I am very pissed with them right now esp after reading your comments about hosted. Anyone know much about Oliver

Reporting isn't much of an issue - a DNS service would be fine. I was having a look at NxFilter but I'll take a butchers at PFsense too - cheers. I haven't had time to look closely at their setup but I guess DNS is provided by the Virgin router along with DHCP so it should be simple enough..

Hi I have just started helping out in a community run library and they are really only just getting started. Everything is a bit all over the place at the moment but they have 20 PCs for community use (which are being replaced this week with the some slightly newer models - Dell 780s!). They also have wireless access and business fiber broadband from Virgin. So they want a low or no cost basic internet filter. No real need for granularity of users just something basic to stop the children accessing inappropriate stuff. Ideally not a filter on individual PCs as they want to filter wireless too. This isn't really my area so any advice would be gratefully received - these guys are working really hard to rescue a library that would have been closed down by the council. Cheers

Hi We are looking for an A1 Printer for our Art Dept as we have been given a bung to purchase one outside of normal budgets. I think we somewhere in the region of £4K but we will need a stand and would like a decent (3 year?) warantee plus maybe an extra pack of ink carts. The main use would be for the photography course so I need to factor in ongoing ink costs so maybe a 6 or 8 colour system rather that 12. I have no knowledge of this area at all other than buying a canon for our DT which was mainy for graphical stuff and that was several years ago. Any suggestions on models\brands would be appreciated.

We have just installed Sophos UTM (moving on from an old ISA server) and have had a fun day sorting out filtering, web protection etc and generally it has gone really well. One thing that I cant seem to crack is publishing our Firefly VLE. I can get it sort of work but not fully. Essentially when you go to the site you are supposed to get a login form which allows you to login using either your network credentials or Firefly's own network credentials. However all you get is a standard pop up login box. I can login using that as a domain user and the site works fine but I cant login as a Firefly user as I don't get the login screen. Anyone out there using this combination and has got it to work. It's been a long day and I am probably missing something. Cheers

In an attempt to speed up login times I used tree size to check profiles sizes and file counts of some users on my 2008 R2 server. I found that Recent Items contained over 9000 files. The path according to tree size on my PC is profile.V2\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent However if I open that server location it opens profile.V2\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items and there is nothing there. If I right click on the folder "Recent Items" I get a size and count but there is still nothing visible in the folder. If I go to the server directly and navigate to the folder - nothing. I have system and hidden files set to view etc.. What am I missing here? Cheers..

Cheers - I had to add all our internal and external sites and now it seems to be fine and I can access sites internally and externally. Now to reinstall FireFly!

Cheers benjie - Sounds too easy! Does this have any knock on effects for other web services like http://www.myschool.org.uk, mail.myschool.org.uk, schoolbase.myschool.org.uk or will the DNS forwarders take care of that and forward upstream?

Hi all, We are setting up FireFly here it is setup internally on 192.168.1.80 - our internal domain is myschool.local handled by our local DNS server on 2008 R2 Externally this is known as learning.myschool.org.uk and this has been setup at the ISP who handles our external DNS on one my public IPs. However for several reasons we can't use the internal name learning.myschool.local in school (Due to friendly urls and auto login) so we use the external one which breaks autologin etc// The support suggested that I set my DNS up so that learning.mychool.org.uk maps to 192.168.1.80. Can this be done by editing DNS on server 2008 R2? I am pretty sure it cant other than by the use of a hosts file (which does work but is a terrible idea and wont work for tablets etc)

I have no issues with being able to prevent FF from running - I've been using a combination of Software Restriction Policies and Sophos App Control for a while. Sophos is very handy as you don't have to keep up with hash values. App locker looks interesting but I have only just moved to Win 7... Blocking the main download page is fine but you can download FF from so many sites it seems a bit long winded and then there is Chrome.. As I say I was just surprised it installed under Win 7 with no admin rights and I was sure there was some GP setting I had seen regarding preventing users from installing apps but it seems I am mistaken. Firefox doesnt care if you are an admin or not - every user can install Firefox and Chrome. Try it - I have just tested it on XP and 7 and it installs to the local user folder under a basic user. Its more than about the proxy - its about setting up what I want in group policy to control IE - Home page, internet Zones etc... GP is great if you use Software restriction policies or App Locker but the "prevent programs from running" is useless as all you have to do is rename the file - Sorry I should have been more specific on the uselessness of GP. I have Application Control sorted through Sophos but I was just wondering if it is possible (through GP or not ) to stop users installing FF or Chrome - it's not a huge issue more of a surprise when I found that it just installed for anyone.. Just wondered if anyone has an answer to preventing Firefox/Chrome installs as they do not require admin rights to install any more. I can block FF in Sophos (group policy is pretty useless) but I would llike a way to prevent them installing it in the first place.

Despite IE being in the non allowed list of apps to run for our exam logins you can still launch it through Word 2010 help by clicking on office.com links. I can still prevent Internet access buy other means but is there a way of preventing IE from running even when called from Office Help?? Cheers

Ok this is interesting but its late (plus beer) so I may be wrong. The site is up but I seem to have got my school removed. I cant search for my school and links that we had saved no longer work. This may be temporary or just a glitch but today I had used the contact form on LG to request institutional removal on the grounds that we dont have 18+ pupils.. Ill see what happens tomorrow..

As of now (15:57 22-12) The site is down. Hope it stays there - parents and the press have been on the blower today already asking about it. It was in the Evening Standard last night and the Mail today...
