How do you give new students their logon credentials? e.g.

  • Give each one a printout with instructions on it
  • Do an inset / IT introduction
  • Ask someone e.g. form tutor to distribute them

Do you use a password generator and copy them to a handout or a generic password and force them to change it?

Start of year: IT introduction

Mid-year: via Tutor. But they often just turn up here

We use a generic password and require them to change it on first logon

Generic password they need to change on first login, and a little A5 sheet of paper handed out by tutors on their first day with all the login details they need. They then have a little induction during their first ICT lesson.

I printed some lovely cards with the students login information on, got them laminated, cut etc.....the teachers have only given half of them out. You had One Job!

I wouldnt do that - I just gave them a printed list - if they want to laminate and cut out, they do it themself!

This was their email details, that are given to year 7 as the school decided not to issue organisers this year. It sort of worked as this card goes into their ID pouch.

Not sure what to do next year though

Printout + autogenerated password for each kid.

We do inset/induction at the start of the year with ~30 kids at a time. If you're a mid-year joiner (and you come to collect your credentials), you get the short version of the induction.

If we send the credentials via the form teacher, it's in a sealed envelope.

We use powershell to extract data from the MIS, create accounts from that data and email tutors, ICT teachers and our helpdesk the credentials. Normally tutors give them out but sometimes they come to the desk to get them.

Yr 7 Get there logons in there fist ICT lesson, Mid year students normaly get pointed in our direction tho if they have IT they will tell them.

We use there admision number from SIMS as there logon and ther DoB for there password.

we use cjwdev password reset tool, it allows the teacher in the classroom to search for the appropriate username (we have a standard format based on the year the student starts). and from there the teacher is able to reset/issue the password.

that mostly used mid year.

yeah 7's se create using a powershell script, and issue the username/password to the ICT teachers.

I used to do mail-merge stickers to go in the student planner with the username and initial password for the new intake these were given to form tutors as part of the induction morning and worked a treat as often students needed to use IT before the first IT lessons.

All students receive an ID card at enrolment which includes their username. The account creation script sends off an email and text message with a link to the IT induction and instructions for activating their account online. Most students have activated their account before stepping foot into college.
