localzuk Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 So, its been 7 years since we've had Canon copiers in our school and I would like current views on them. What are they like now? We had reliability issues with the one we had back in the day, but at the same time it was under-sized for the job it was doing and Canon seemed to be unable to provide engineers in any reasonable time to fix the thing. A lot can change in 7 years though. Plus, we're looking at a third party, so the engineers would be from them instead of Canon themselves. Anyone using Canon copiers, and if so, how do you guys find them?
mrbios Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 I wouldn't recommend them, had them the last 4 years, two swapped out 2 years ago, each one as bad as the next. Reliability wise they've been pretty shocking. They also have the highest per device license cost for papercut if i remember correctly. We're in the same process ourselves at the moment as our contracts expire on November, but definitely no chance i'd touch canon again. Who's the third party you're in contact with? (Don't touch a company called EBC whatever you do!) On another note: Epson have a 100ppm device that's coming out in the summer, it's RIPS based, so no warming up of a fuser, no heating required which = less to go wrong, and the ink bags last something like 100,000 prints. Probably worth a look at, it's just been shown off at BETT i think. 1

MrEprise Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 To be fair to BayTek, they're very good and they'll have an engineer out within a few hours. However, the engineer we have (who also lives quite locally which is handy) is rather too often out fixing our Canon photocopiers as they always seem to be breaking down.
Sylv3r Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 We've had Canon machines since January 2016 and we've been delighted with them. Reliability has been great and we have integrated them with the Uniflow software, we are finding staff so comfortable carrying out doing their own copying, that it's near enough made our Reprographics Manager redundant. Support is direct with Canon, and with the machines dialling home for toner replenishments and an engineer, we hardly ever have to pick up the phone and log a call. Not sure what models you were thinking about but our print room consists of 1 x VarioPrint 135 and 1 x Imagepress C800 and our satellite machines across the school consist of 5 x 6275's and 2 slightly bigger models which i can't remember the model number of. We've added hole punching and saddlestitch options to them all too. Staff love making A5 booklets !

win Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 We have the image runners with papercut. I would say they are no better or worse than others on the market. Used for scanning, copying and printing, staple & collate. Reliable when working but there are engineer callouts from time to time. Both staff & students using it here - staff ones having more problems than the student one of course!
Oaktech Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 We've got 2x 5200 series, a 7200 series and a 250 series, and an install of Uniflow contracted directly with Canon UK and I can't fault them. They've been very reliable - in a year we've had 2 call outs, both have been indirectly caused by user error. The contract is reasonable and Canon beat all of the other options hands down!

We didn't go through the framework directly, these were the prices they offered us as being their 'public sector' prices and when they came out 10-15% cheaper on hardware costs and offered us virtually free print management it became an offer no one else could get close to.

Being offered lower prices for the mono, but higher for the colour. Think I'll go back to the company and see if they can get pricing under the CCS framework.

We currently have Sharp Copiers, a real mix of big MX-6240N down to smaller MX-C310 and its a flat fee across the board. I've been given the job of looking at cost savings as we are paying, 0.31 for BW... and 3p per colour. We'd like papercut MF as we only have NG at present.

We currently have Sharp Copiers, a real mix of big MX-6240N down to smaller MX-C310 and its a flat fee across the board. I've been given the job of looking at cost savings as we are paying, 0.31 for BW... and 3p per colour. We'd like papercut MF as we only have NG at present. There are some big savings to make, just by looking around one of our primaries will save around £6000 a year. That's a set of iPads.
localzuk Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 We've almost made our decision on all this now. Whichever we go for, Ricoh or Canon, we'll be making about a 1/3rd saving on per copy costs compared to our current machines. That's a huge amount of money whichever way you look at it.

Hopefully will be able to make huge savings from our current supplier (who wish to charge us to leave the contract, even at the end) Never really thought about Canon before.

The 2 companies I'm looking at do it differently. Ricoh direct don't deal with PaperCut (I installed it on the machines myself last time, with the aid of the Ricoh install engineer who made the changes that their side need to make). Baytek would provide PaperCut and install it for us.

Tell me about it, they were paying actually paying a per page click for each scan to email. I believe the company ended up in the national news because of it. We compare all our schools on a per pupil per year and this one school were on around £50 p/pupil p/y on photocopying Edited February 1, 2017 by nathan
