hallb15 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 This seems to be a recurring issue but one that I've never found a concrete solution for. iPad mini 2, when connected to a Windows PC (7 64-bit in this case but seems irrelevant which version) will not allow you to see the photos on it. You can hear the usual bing bong when the iPad is connected, but no prompts appear on the PC. All you get is an 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' in Devices and Printers. The 'Trust this computer' prompt does not appear. It doesn't matter what version of iTunes you may or may not have installed - most of the time the iPads are more than happy to work without iTunes installed at all so I don't include it in the build. Its only a small few of our iPads that do this, but when they do, they will refuse to work on ANY PC in school. PCs that other iPads work fine on, these few rogue ones don't. The only way I've found to get the iPad working is to completely erase them and start again, which I'm fed up having to do as it seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut type of solution. Any ideas?
DJ-1701 Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 Have you tried turning it off and on again? (No, really). If you have iTunes installed, then the full driver should be available to it, but sometimes I've found that they still don't work and need to be powered off and on again.

The best way I've found to get photos off an iPad is to use a MAC along with iPhoto. Plug iPad into MAC > Open iPhoto > Import the pictures you want to the MAC.
hallb15 Posted September 30, 2016 Author Posted September 30, 2016 @DJ-1701 really, you had to ask that?! @Kingstech We use Meraki for MDM. @RLR we only have one MacBook which we use purely for apple configurator. The rest of school is Windows only.

I meant no offence, when you have 15 things going on, all of them annoying basics can be missed, we are only human after all. Of course, logically if you have latest iTunes installed on Windows 7 x64, it has the latest driver for iOS connectivity. 1
duzzie Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 We use Meraki MDM and I have to remove the restrictions Tag off the relevent iPad, I can then see the pictures when plugged in to the PC. Maybe worth looking at.

PR-UK Posted September 30, 2016 Posted September 30, 2016 If it's setup with an Apple ID it may be using iCloud Photo Library, because the iPad is uploading content and keeping thumbnails on the iPad there's nothing to see on the iPad so it doesn't appear as a media device on computers. Had one like that this week...

Had one like that this week... Nope - not using icloud photo library. Have you supervised the devices using Apple Configurator. The iPAD may only work on the device used to supervise now. They were originally setup via AC but not supervised. All 35 have been setup exactly the same way so why does it only affect a small few? This morning I've erased one completely and updated to iOS 10.0.2 but it's still refusing to work with the PC. It did the usual 'Trust this computer' pop up on the iPad but still nothing appears on the PC. We are using the Wifi Photo transfer app as a work round, but it shouldn't be like this!
Kineas Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 Google Drive (or equivalent) is definitely the easiest way for staff to get their photos off. Just install the app, they log into it and they can upload whatever they want and then access it from their PC's. If you don't have Google Drive, you get unlimited storage capacity for an educational establishment. If I ever need to get photos off, I use Image Capture on OSX.
hallb15 Posted October 7, 2016 Author Posted October 7, 2016 We're an Office365 school so its OneDrive for us, but Wifi Phototransfer seems to be fine for most needs. I'm in the process of setting all staff iPads to static IP addresses so I can create a page on our portal with a link for each staff member, just to make it one step simpler.

Could be that if you are supervising using configurator.That option has never worked for me, the easiest way I've found is to keep an ipad out of the management system (normally one that has a cracked screen and is out of circulation) and use airdrop to send files from the managed ipads to that one which can them be plugged in to a windows pc.
north-ict Posted October 7, 2016 Posted October 7, 2016 I use an app the free version called File Explorer by Stephen Zhang. On the free version you can set up one share. I have mine set up so they can transfer pictures and movies over to the Media Nas over wifi. Works okay.

If you've not even supervised a school owned device or why this is so critical to any school owned iPad it's not really surprising you are getting problems...why on earth would you not be using One Drive for iOS on the iPads????
