None so far expect EES to disappear entirely...but none so far know any details about what's replacing it or at what cost, either. Plus there was one rather bemused reseller who gave me the answers to 2 questions I hadn't asked, and no answers to the 4 questions I did ask?!?!

If MS doesn't have a plan to replace the current licensing model then we all need to look at worst case scenario of paying full price and act accordingly. With only 2 years effectively to plan anything we need to know now to get a wriggle on. Being more specific Gibson335's first 4 questions cover it really. What will there be, how much will it cost, what will we lose and what strings will be attached?

At current rate that will make an FTE cost around £220. A server standard licence will be about £250 and a datacentre licence could be around £1500. I've told our finance people to expect our licencing bill to be a choice between not paying, and losing a full time TA. 3

Thanks for that, I've been trying to get a rough estimate of what we are looking at. This is what I am talking about though, our Head balks at the current cost but telling him about the discount we get makes it palatable. Heading that way just isn't. Well I guess we could scale back what we do, things like per server licenses rather than datacenter per host, forcing us to think harder about spinning up a new host for a project or for a new service. Though having done a quick count, Datacenter would still be cheaper!

I still can't believe that MS would, at a stroke, price out most schools like this.
George_j Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Have you consider Buy out option..... it might be a bigger upfront payment but at least will have the perpetual licenses. That could be done at the end of your current agreement. Also that gives you automatically the latest version of the product which you are buying. Unfortunately that is only for the on premise licenses. There is no further information even from the Distribution about the Microsoft intension. It's too early at that stage.

Reducing the price when people have signed up to another program is one thing... hiking the price for everyone that has already invested is quite another
localzuk Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 The key here is that Microsoft need to clarify what's happening. Saying "we're going to be withdrawing this" without saying what's going to be coming afterwards is ridiculous. Schools like to know what's coming, so they can plan ahead. Rolling out a new OS can be a 2+ year process, for example! The reality will be - if we can't get clarity sooner rather than later, it would not be surprising if a number of schools move away from MS technologies. 2
