MkII Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I've just taken out a 2yr PCP on an all electric Renault Zoe. Replaced my 03 Corsa. Was a bargain @ £134 a month for 2 years. House charger and breakdown included. No tax of course, insurance same. Servicing should be minimal. Regenerative brakes so physical pads get used very little. No gears and very nippy. Costs about £1.50 to charge. 80 mile realistic range which should get better with warmer weather. Coming from banger class I was nervous as hell driving down country lanes in case I pranged it. Over that now 2 months in. 3

difinity Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I paid 2k for my 57 plate focus estate 2-3 years ago. It came with a full service history and a list of every bit of work that had ever been done on it and a lowish 115,000 miles. Apart from regular oil changes every 7 thousand miles that cost me £50 and a couple of tyres it's cost nothing extra apart from a couple of MOTs it's gone straight through. It has a device fitted that means nobody drives in my boot and kids in their toy cars don't race me either, it does 70-80mpg on the motorway and averages 50mpg with normal driving. I'm on 150,000 miles and as long as i keep up with the oil changes i expect another 100,000 miles out of it.

Duranis Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Gotta say unless I had a lot of money spare I would never buy or lease a new car. I have had some cracking cars for under a grand that have done me really well. Then when I fancy a change I can resell for not too much of a loss and pick something else up for cheap. I used to switch cars a lot as well. If the worst happens and something big goes wrong on it then I can just scrap it and get something else for the cost of the repair. I have learnt to DIY a lot of the basics as well which makes me a little less worried about getting older cars. My last car (slightly modded 2.5L MG ZS) cost me £600 and I had it for 2 years before someone hit it and wrote it off. Never had an issue with it despite its age and it was a really nice car to drive. I guess there has never been a new model of car that I wanted enough to spend a bunch of money on, there is always a nice choice of cars in the 5year+ range when your biggest priority in a car is "fun to drive" .
eyetea Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 As much as I hate my £200 Fiesta (2000 reg) - I have a 10-15mins commute each way to and from work, and another 10min trip to the gym, I feel I can't really justify getting a snazzy car! Especially as my partner and I are saving for a new kitchen... and then a larger house! Dad's retired now so anything apart from welding / major stuff we can do ourselves, and even then I loathe spending much on it! Wish our maisonette had space to store a bike, then I'd cycle to work!

I have the sort of luck that if I park in an empty car park, someone will park next to me and slam their door into mine. Would be too scared to lease a car even if I could afford it.

We have been pleased with the convenience; we think it costs a bit more than owning, but the confidence of knowing exactly how much we would be paying with no unexpected repair bills was well worth it. On the other hand, handback time is stressful, though - need full valeting plus the tiniest scratches get looked for and charged for. One bill we had - for a car that was 4 years old and to my mind OK to go straight out for resale - was over £600.

Zero deposit/ other payments on that btw, and 10500miles pa.. Hefty Gov't and Renault grants too. Free charging most places although sadly none close enough to me out in the sticks.

Over that now 2 months in. @mark - Are you paying a battery rental cost as well or is that included? When I always look at these cars the battery rental costs more than it would to put some fossil based fuel in it which in my mind renders the whole electric car thing useless! Pete

Well with my anorak on that's be the GSI2000 with the C20XE redtop in, unless someone swapped the engine ofc. Mine started as an 8v C20NE SE5 but we put a Saab B204 turbo in it, on an F20 gearbox. Phwwoooaaarrr.

I put a K&N cone filter, Janspeed, PowerCap (replaced the SFI box and made the air flow better) and a Turbo body kit. Wasn't built by Cosworth just the design I believe. Apparently prone to block corrosion in the water ways which then seeped into the Oil ways. Edited January 12, 2016 by Davit2005

My cars are tidy and well maintained, but they were cheap enough to buy outright. Helps that I can fix then though, which makes a substantial difference to running costs. It is worth looking at getting something older but decent, from a cost perspective. Even with DMF, cambelts, steering rack, servicing, thermostat, tyres, etc it was still a cheaper year than any of these deals, and I get two cars for that.
