Apparently there is/was a major routing issue, causing problems nationwide.

BT customers all over the UK are saying they can't get online – with the apparent network outage possibly taking up to three days to fix.

The outage manifested as a packet routing problem, with some unfortunate souls reporting 100 per cent packet loss to various IP addresses – thus ruling out a DNS snafu.

BT used its official customer care Twitter account this morning to admit to problems in the south east, East Anglia and the East Midlands. No timescales were given on Twitter for any fixes.

Mine went off last night, came back but was slower than my old dial up.

Anyone else have problems?

BT only admitted there was a problem at 10am this morning. It seems to have improved a lot by this eventing, but there are still issues.

I don't know about BT, but my VM has been woeful of late, I think I am going to bin them in Feb when its up for renewal, the WiFi has become woeful, regardless of the channel I select on this Turkey cable modem they supply (lucky to have FTTC with the cab 100 feet away from my house here).

You're usually better to switch off all the gubbins in the VM box and put a decent wifi router of your own behind it. My VM has been rock solid and just been upgraded to a solid 70meg while trimming £20 off the bill - bonus!

First time ever that SWGFL was better than my home BT connection! I completed my earlier attempt to restart my RDS box at 11pm last night using RD for android because my EE phone had solid internet. My home connection could browse very slowly - about 2 minutes to open an ebay page - but couldn't manage youtube or the RD session. It seems better this morning.

Fine in Lincolnshire last night, and I was procrastinating online for hours when I should have been writing.

I do hate BT. Took me three days of phone calls before they'd commit to sending an engineer to fix my in-laws' obviously-broken phone line.

Day 1, Sunday 4pm: usual argument about plugging in to the master socket. Know full well the conversation won't progress until I do this. "Ok now we'll test for 24 hours..." ARGH.

Promises to call back around the same time tomorrow. I ask for it to be between 5 & 6pm instead as I'll driving back from work at 4pm. Agreed and booked.

Day 2, Monday 4pm: missed call from BT. FFS.

5pm: I phone them and--incredibly--get someone useful. He looks at the logs and says "oh yes, I can see the problems with your service" OH THANK YOU WHY DIDN'T THE FIRST BLOKE JUST CHECK THOSE LOGS THEN IF YOU HAVE THEM FFS

Problem needs to be escalated to second line. Call arranged for Tuesday 5-7pm.

Day 3, Tuesday 5pm: I turn up at my in-laws' house, ready for the phone call. I've been pretending to be my Father in Law because it's just easier. I watch Pointless.

6pm: I watch the news.

7pm: I find myself stuck watching Eastenders. I try to phone them, with my phone set to allow call waiting.

8pm: after 45 minutes on hold, and having finished my apple-pie-and-custard, and even gone to the toilet and still not prompted a phone call, which is usually a very reliable method of triggering it, I give up and go home for my tea.

8:20pm: BT man rings the in-laws while I'm at home eating my jacket potato and cheesy beans. Mother-in-law phones me after he hangs up to conduct tests. I abandon my dinner half eaten and race round there as fast as I can, expecting him to phone back any minute. I wait ten more minutes before he does.

8:40pm: BT finally agree that there is a fault in the line, as evidenced by the 2.5Mbps broadband dropping out continually and the hissing phone line they've been talking to me on, and tell me they'll send an engineer out. At last! I could have told them that 52 hours ago.

I go home. The cat has eaten my cheesy beans.

Virgin's issue was a Datacentre in London lost power and made a huge mess of things as one of our ISPs emailed us saying that if they were using a Virgin backhaul to our site we may have issues due to this and @Domino had fun with his Virgin connection yesterday....

They haven't improved then. We went through similar hoops for months when we were with them. We were getting 0.75Mbps and the connection dropped constantly... in a town. The neighbours were all fine.

Openreach eventually came out. Line stopped dropping. Speed failed to improve.

Moved to Sky and, as if by magic, we immediately got the same speeds as our neighbours. We won't return to BT unless we really have to.
