robsonma Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Hi, I have been asked to get a new laptop for our new head teacher when she arrives in January, She has requested a Sony Vaio with 1TB Hard Drive, I have found that Sony are no longer making them! there are a couple of Sony Vaio's about on Argos ect... Anyone have any good Places to get one? I am Looking for a HighEnd Spec like I said around 8GB Ram 1TB Hard Drive. Any Websites would be welcome. Mark.
localzuk Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I'd advise against a Vaio, for the precise reason that Sony have stopped making them. Instead, I'd say speak to @VeryPC_Colin_M, and see what they can offer. Otherwise, something as "pretty" as the Vaios would be one of the Asus range. 1

If she genuinely has 1TB of data it probably shouldn't be stored on a laptop - it's a lot to lose if the hard disk fails or the laptop gets stolen. I personally would try to persuade her to get a 500GB SSD. More storage space than she'll probably ever need and it will be a hell of a lot quicker than a 1TB mechanical drive. Maybe you could use that as a selling point? I use Very PC for my laptops. An i5 with 8GB RAM and 500GB SSD and a decent warranty from Very PC will be better than a Sony Vaio. 2
3s-gtech Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Don't buy a Sony VAIO, there'll be issues with warranties etc (even if it's just the duration). The new VAIO brand doesn't sell in Europe yet. An SSD is a far better bet than a HDD - from experience, she won't need 1TB of space (might be worth finding a machine that can take M2 and SATA though). What's the budget?

NB9457 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 No matter what machine you get, make sure it has an SSD. Even a machine for most teachers with a Pentium CPU and SSD would feel faster than an i5 and mechanical HDD.

I do believe the ones we just got support MSATA SSDs and a Standard HDD, so you can give her the space on a traditional HDD but the speed of an SSD on two drives. We have these machines with the same image as our others and they boot from cold boot to CTRL+ALT+DEL in under 25 seconds, and that is with GPOs being pulled down OVER WIRELESS!!!!!!!!!!! 1

Personally I would give the same laptop as all other staff get, keeping standards and support the same. Should not matter at what position they are are you are IT support and you decide personally. 4

So much this. We do provide a higher spec model to anyone who has a particular requirement, but all our laptops for all our staff and students are from the same range from the same supplier we buy everything else from at that time. It's impossible to support a mixed bag effectively.

Sony Vaio laptop were a pain we had to send them back for service (The failure rate seems high 20 machines I must have set back at least 3). I also worked with Dell the Dell NBD was always spot on. We have a over 100 new Lenovo E550 have been a bit of an issues getting parts even thought we have the extended warranty for some reason the supplier can not get parts NBD from Lenovo. MatthewL Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I do agree with the Sony stuff, I had to degrade one from Vista to XP a few years ago and had nothing but issues driver wise, the Dell was a much better spec that we had as a standard. It was a time before I was in a position to say anything too!!

Oaktech Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Every Sony laptop that has come to see me has left feet first. They are just awful and the remnants of the Sony support site are beyond a joke. I bought our executive head a 15.6" i5 probook from @ICTDirect_Dave because I refuse to waste money on something that is more pretty than functional. It's a good spec and costs very little. Her stated requirements were that she needed was a bigger screen and a quieter keyboard than the i3 Acer she was given by her previous school. 1
