We've been watching Lost Boys and Fairies on iPlayer (we've not watched the final episode yet). The portrayal of the adoption process, in particular the adopters' emotional reactions to it, are absolutely... spot... on.

 

Usually when watching a TV programme or film about something you understand better than most it can be a frustrating experience (e.g. CCTV 'enhancement'), but it was clear from about 20 seconds in that the writers had written it because they'd been through the adoption process and needed to communicate it faithfully.

 

We adopted recently and so many of the scenes are really hitting us. Plenty of tears.

Writers aren't techy in general.

 

Would be funny though "I'm here to adopt this child" - "We will give you 600 children just in case" - Adult has no problem with 600 children for some reason

Only watched the first episode so far but it looks good. Is the whole looking through a brochure of available children really a thing, because on the face of it that seems kinda weird (although I can't think of a better way to do it so...).

Yes. LinkMaker is used by loads of local authorities and agencies around the country, so our experience of it was more like online dating: searching for childrens' profiles and filtering for age, ethnicity, needs, etc. Hard work and you can't read too many profiles of an evening. As a potential adopter you have to really sell yourself in your profile and make yourself stand out to the social workers around the country who will be trawling through adopters' profiles. When you want to register an interest in certain children, you may not hear anything back if that child's social worker is pursuing other adopters, or just doesn't feel like you're a good enough match.

 

The scene where the children are reaching out of the pages of the brochure choked me up, because that's how it felt. You're told to hold in mind that most of those children will find a family that is suited to their needs - it just happens that it's not going to be you.

I know a gay couple who recently adopted. I'm betting that the way it's portrayed doesn't reflect their experience. Unless and have kept very quiet about writing a TV show.

Just finished S2 of "My Life is Murder". One of Mme LeMarchand's faves, it's an easy to watch cosy crime drama set it New Zealand (S1 in Australia). Nothing special, but it generally keeps me awake due to mainly being shot in the sun. Presumably Lucy Lawless is getting to use her actual accent for once.

Just finished Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+.

 

I did quite like it, but it was kinda slow and being (mainly) a prequel to the Monsterverse I can't help but feel that the subtitle is incorrect. Wasn't keen on the multiple time zones, which must surely be hard work for the writers to keep everything in track. As it is, there's a new reveal about the Under-world that the movies have yet to mention. If you have Apple and have been wondering about it, possibly worth a look. Not worth forking over a sub for, though.

Hijack Apple TV+

 

 

Idris Elba plays a corporate negotiator stuck on a hijacked plane. Well worth a watch. A bit far-fetched at times, but it doesn't suffer from "mid-season sag" and keeps the tension high. The "real time" aspect is a bit underused; I'd forgotten it was supposed to be real time until rewatching the trailer. Possibly the best plane-based show since the first season of "Into the Night".

And there's supposedly a season 2 of Hijack in the works. It'll be interesting to see where they go with it. Maybe a train this time...

As you seem to be working your way through Apple TV shows, I'd recommend Constellation if you haven't seen it already.

I guess Idris's character will be the white collar John McClane in that he keeps getting into unlikely situations? Either that, or the big bad might want revenge.

Norsemen (Netflix)

 

 

Just finished the first of three six episode seasons of "Norsemen", a Norwegian but filmed in English 30 minute comedy. Only occasionally laugh out loud funny, but always amusing.

Those about to die on Prime (even managed to sit through the stupid adverts - at least half of which were for other Prime shows!).

 

A decent series - attempting to be GoT in Ancient Rome (including randomly killing off characters for little apparent reason) - but just lacking the polish that GoT had/started with.

 

Characters are ... okay, but don't really show much development, other than a couple of them going in the really obvious direction they telegraph for a good few episodes. But even then, they're acted well - especially the main character (Tenax) played by Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton from GoT), although there are times when the two characters appear very similar. Some of the leading Roman characters differ significantly from modern interpretations of them, but are somewhat necessary for the storyline.

 

The action sequences, particularly in the Circus and Colosseum, are very well done, although one in sequence is a bit OTT in terms of the CGI.

 

Hopefully they'll make a second season, as it left the story with significant room for growth both from a historical/accuracy point of view and also from the fictional side of things as well.

 

Worth a look, if you can stand the adverts.

Bodies on Netflix. Finally got around to finishing this. Always intriguing, but I'm not sure the timey wimey stuff works (why would it make the mark, just for starters?). Also, I'm sure that we saw one "dead" character seemingly cheat their fate, only for this to be ignored from that point on. Takes a while to come together, but worth a watch.

 

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video. Seen the first four episodes, which I've generally enjoyed. The choice of a couple of actors to leave hasn't been too glaring in one instance (the prosthetics help), but the decision to kill off the other off screen rather than recast seems a bit odd. Not as odd as Galadriel's insistence that the rings can be used for good, though.

Couple of good ones this month

Midnight Mass - An isolated island community experiences a surge in religious fervour when miracles start happening.

 

 

A truly superb one-off horror series from the people who made the haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor and the Fall of the House of Usher.

Thoughtful, clever and just really good. We loved this one.

 

 

Kaos - Greek mythology made modern with an absolutely stellar cast. Absolutely loving this one right now and really glad it's already been picked up for series 2!
