Duranis Posted July 2, 2021 Posted July 2, 2021 Loki (Disney+) is brilliant because it understands that all it needs to do is give Tom Hiddleston lots of time to be a little chaotic goblin...... We are watching this too and completely agree. Also watched Wanda Vision which I really liked (it has a weird start, takes a couple of episodes) and Falcon and the Winter solider which was "ok" but not amazing.

Is it OK if you just take it as a separate thing and forget that it is supposed to be a Pratchett thing?? I have discussed it with SWMBO (the one at home) and 'we' have agreed to give it a go when people stop hitting little green balls around lawns somewhere in London

Problem with adaptations is people always want them to be like the original, they often judged on how like the original they were. The original is 30 years old, lots of opportunities to update it for a start. And then you have the fact it's a different medium, visual. Meanwhile Carrot and Vimes are the same as the book, Sybil is updated and cool, Vetinari is fine, Angua is iconic, Cheery is the most changed, and the most interesting for that. Same kind of changes we saw in Sherlock's recent reinterpretations, which were well received. Also wasn't it on iplayer 6 months ago?

At risk of speaking about something I've not seen, only watched the trailers for: the promotional material had Vimes behaving more like Jack Sparrow than Sam Vimes, and I'm struggling to think how that could be further from the always-in-control-lest-The-Beast-break-free, always-aware-and-always-thinking, hyper-vigilant character in the books. 2

It's Vimes from the first book, a broken alcoholic who's given up on everything. The character in the series does develop but if you're a fan of the novels I would remind you that this is inspired by the Discworld and not Discworld itself. I was pleased with how they implied the complexities of the Goblin culture though. If you're looking for a Discworld interpretation that's worthy of STP then I would recommend searching for Troll Bridge. 1

Grant is a delight and perfectly cast. Best thing Marvel have done in years, maybe ever. (This may simply be because of Tom Hiddleston, but the writing is lots of fun too.)
Duranis Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 The Mrs started watching a series on netflix called "workin' Moms" initially this was one of those programs were I thought I would just leave her too it while I went and did something else (i.e. "chick flick territory"). I've kind of got into it though. Pretty funny comedy while feeling relatively grounded and real. The cast is pretty great and the writing and story is actually pretty damn good. Lots of swearing and "adult themes" so maybe not for everyone but I'm enjoying it and its pretty far outside of what I would normally watch.

Was a lot better than I expected, though I'm not sure about John Krasinski's acting skills and the episode where he was being a complete "aubergine" to the Turkish crim whose help was desperately needed wound me up. Also, what was the point of the subplot about the drone pilot? Worth a look if you liked 24 as it has a similar sort of vibe. If you enjoyed Jack Ryan and haven't already, I'd suggest Treadstone, it's very similar in style (and similar content in being a spy action thriller). 1

Finished Superstore which was really good - I didnt think I would like it but it reels you in Been trying to watch Intergalactic but not that impressed so far New Amsterdam is back this week too - yay!

With Anna resuming her career, they hire a young live-in nanny to help, Becky. Anna befriends Becky and is concerned about Jake's secretive behaviour. Charlie Brooks, Brett Tucker, Phoebe Roberts, Isabella Giovinazzo. Doesn't seem like something I will get into, but 5Foot2 is hopeful. We are just starting episode 2. 4 episodes in all.

It's not that it wasn't gorgeously produced, well acted and with superb gore. It's just that there's not a whole lot of variation in a Zombie survival horror story. There's a reason they make such good films!
LeMarchand Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Now watched both existing seasons of War of the Worlds (the Anglo-French co-production which takes a sliver of inspiration from the novel). A little sedate and obviously low budget (battles tend to be heard in the distance rather than seen) but generally worth a watch. That said, the reason for the invasion makes no sense at all and I have many, many nitpicks. Season 2 seems to bring things to a conclusion - it will be interesting to see if S3 sees the Big Reset Button pushed or if it will take a completely new direction.

6Foot2 Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 We have just finished the box set of Baptiste (Series 2) Tchéky Karyo resumes his role as retired police investigator Julien Baptiste alongside Fiona Shaw, who makes her debut appearance in the series as British Ambassador Emma Chambers, for a brand new gripping case which will take viewers into Budapest’s secretive and corrupt underworld. Series 2 began its run on BBC 1 on Sunday 18th July at 9pm. There are six episodes in the series, each an hour long. If you liked the series 1, I think you will also like series 2.
