LeMarchand Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Finished Season 2 of Jack Ryan. Started a while back, but Ryan was in full-on righteous ~hole mode for the first couple of eps and we almost didn't bother carrying on. Glad we did, as things got better. Even the padding subplot eventually linked back into the main plot (unlike the drone pilot in S1). The final "wrap up" two scenes, whilst emotionally engaging, were faintly ridiculous, though. Also, why no mention of Jack's gf from S1? Also started S2 of Into the Night last night. Not quite as propulsive now they're no longer trying to escape the sun, but they've already got a whole bunch of other problems. Shame the subs don't offer a non-Close Captioned option as I find "ominous music plays" a bit of a distraction, and the regular labelling of French as (In English) more so. That said, a lot of the dialogue is now in English due to the base being a NATO one. I probably should've watched a recap first, too - I was struggling to remember who was who, not helped by all the new people.
LeMarchand Posted September 12, 2021 Posted September 12, 2021 Schmigadoon (Apple TV) Joey and Melissa, couple with relationship problems, get lost on a hike and find themselves in Schmigadoon. Initially they think they are in some sort of "theme town" but then realise that they are trapped inside an actual musical - and they can't leave until they find True Love. Why hadn't I heard about this before the beginning of this month? This is the first thing Apple have made that I have ever liked and would recommend it to anyone who liked the look of the trailer. It helps if you know what the town takes its name from and have a passing familiarity with 40s/50s musicals (though there is a very rude version of Do-Re-Mi along with a character based on The Baroness and the final song edges into Godspell territory), though here's a handy list of the references (spoilers - so only read about each ep after you've watched it). It's also packed with Broadway stars if that's in your wheelhouse. Things occasionally get disjointed (they had to cut a couple of eps from the season due to Covid) and while the songs aren't my sort of thing - and it's nowhere near as sharp as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend or as brilliant as Galavant - I would have loved more of the show. Plus the ending, whilst predictable, was genuinely heart-warming. Anyone want some Corn Puddin'?

Loved it still, though if you think that all members of the armed forces are heroes maybe give it a miss. Also don't get too attached to anyone. Worst thing is that it ends on numerous cliffhangers and no official renewal yet. 1
LeMarchand Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Watched the first episode of Intergalactic a while back, and thought it was so awful that I was prepared to dump it (not something that I often feel based on a single ep). Mme LeMarchand wanted to give it a chance, and it did improve a little. The biggest problem was that most of the characters were unlikeable or annoying. If this is on your "watch when I get around to it" list I'd cross it off. 1

That's next on our list - got to finish Vigil first but the wife keeps falling asleep, which isn't a good advert for the programme but I'm enjoying it.

Sick of the close ups of Elisabeth Moss gawping open mouthed? To be fair, it is a well made show, but I put it on the back burner after starting Season 3 - though I haven't entirely given up on it yet. It seemed to be stuck in a bit of a Bad Things happen/A ray of hope!/Hope is snuffed out!/Bad things happen loop.

Duranis Posted October 13, 2021 Posted October 13, 2021 My Mrs watched a mini series on Netflix called Maid about a woman trying to escape an abusive relationship and make a better life for her and her daughter. It is actually an incredibly well written and well acted show. I hated it so much I couldn't actually sit in the same room while it was on. It is very much about the cycle of abuse and how this behavior gets handed down through generations and the difficulty of breaking the cycle. Having had people close to me going through similar in their lives and the little girl in it really reminding me of my own daughter it absolutely broke me. It is a good show but be prepared for some unrelenting bleakness.

LeMarchand Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 I was reading an article about K Dramas and came across Memories of the Alhambra (Netflix). Only watched the first ep, which was quite interesting, but every synopsis and the trailer (and the article I read) spoil it as the first ep's structure relies on you not knowing certain plot points in advance. I would imagine that, if you went in blind, you'd be much more appreciative of it. Have also watched the first 3 or so eps of My Life is Murder (UKTV Play). Lucy Lawless stars as an ex-cop turned private investigator in Melbourne. Can't say I'm overly impressed so far, but it is one of those "Don't have to pay that close attention" shows for when you just want to chill. 1

Quite fun spotting the Fire Fly references and all the Star Trek actors that show in it during the first 3 seasons. 1
