Watched the first episode of Season 2 of Locke & Key (Netflix). Was OK, but did seem more "teenage" than Season 1. Only just realised that Emilia Jones (Kinsey) is Aled's daughter. He hasn't taught her very well. In the ep she was walking on water, not air, and previously she's sung to a sun god rather than a snowman.

Yes, I've only watched a couple and it seems to have gone the way of focus on teenage angst more than the story. Though the bit in the movie theatre was a bit of a shock!

started off as a bit ho- hum

but has got better as it has gone on

 

clearly they have to dole the clues out slowly - if some smart - er - alec - solved the whole thing on week 2 it would be a bit of a problem

but it has been interesting

 

 

also watching Ambulance - wonderful insight to how it all works

not as good as the season before the pandemic - more serious this time

mind you they could never match the 2 old(ish) Irish women over in Liverpool for a night out calling an Liverpool ambulance crew - Mrs mikeprice nearly fell off the sofa laughing and I was in pain from it all

Another Life - interesting

 

It's quite poor, unfortunately, but could have been great. I do like Katee Sackhoff, but the script and acting are so over-the-top melodramatic. This is supposed to be a highly trained mission team but they all appear to be highly dysfunctional. It's typical of Hollywood's idea of good SF - put some needless drama and flawed characters into it when the setting itself is sufficiently dramatic.

 

It bears no comparison with the superb The Expanse, which shows how good SF should be written.

Snowpiercer on Netflix. Had never got round to the film, had never read the original comic. Thought it'd be alright. Turns out it's bloody amazing. Some great work by the cast, including Daveed Diggs, Jennifer Connelly and (in season 2) Sean Bean as an utter, utter barsteward. Wife and I have both loved it.

 

Now three episodes into Midnight Mass (Netflix) and thus far it's just as compelling as Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor (all from the same writer/director); not as scary as Hill House was, but the drama and character elements are as superb as ever. If you liked the others, you'll like this one. (And if you haven't watched the others, and are okay with spooky-creepy horror, I thoroughly recommend them. Hill House is one of my favourite things ever.)

Season 3 starts on TNT in the US in January (I think they had S2 on netflix a week or so behind the US network), and it's already been renewed for S4.

Been reading hard sci-fi for 50 years so have some experience of the genre

Quite enjoyed the Expanse (binge watched it in work during the lockdown last year alongside breaking bad).... I thought the last season was rubbish though.

 

Same with Snowpiercer... first season was good but Sean Bean is... cliched

The Expanse as a TV show is one of the better examples of Sci-Fi on screen. It's gorgeous to look at, pays attention to physics (mostly) and is both beautifully crafted and competently written.

The books are significantly better than the TV show, as is often the case. But then adaptations are rarely able to capture everything that made the book great.

 

I can't say that it's in any way pretentious though. It's good near-future sci-fi with a nice mix of action, politics and mystical alien shenanigans.

 

 

Speaking of adaptations... Wheel of Time is out a week tomorrow and I'm beyond excited to see that world realised!

Agreed, the James SA Corey (a nom de plume for two authors, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) books are excellent.

We have just finished the box set. It seems like anything I might say would be a spoiler.

Yeah it does feel a bit like that. They obviously bought some nice drones and want to use them as much as they can for the scenery.

I got a free trail of Apple TV so started watching some of their shows. Annoyingly the trial should run till January but has messed up somehow so I can't watch anything anymore.

 

Thought Ted Lasso was brilliant.. was really looking forward to watching Finch and thought Invasion was pretentious twaddle. (like a lot of the stuff on APPLE Tv)

I've had it as part of Apple One for the past few months. It seems to work OK, but out of all the streaming services I've used (Netflix, Prime, Disney+, iPlayer and this) it has by far the worst interface and the least content.

 

Still, For All Mankind was bloody good.

Binged the entire 1st season of Riot Games' Arcane yesterday.

Probably worth a watch even if you don't play League of Legends. It's a story of haves-vs-have-nots, the struggle of those born into the have-nots, and the machinations of a seedy political underbelly, featuring all the drug-pushing and under-the-table mafia goodness that typically comes with. Well written, believable characters; some damn good action sequences; and an amazing sound design to boot.

 

Definitely excited for S2, whenever that ends up being.

We binge watched Shetland and was gutted that it seems to have stopped at Series 6 Ep5. Unless its still waiting to be aired.
