Is the Queen's Gambit the spin off series? ;)

 

Ha, I'll be honest, I thought it was going to be another programme about the Royals :D

 

We just finished box-setting The Bay, Series 1 in preparation for series 2.

We are now box setting Marcella, series 3.

 

We are at now at episode 6, and what was confusing earlier is starting to clear up.

 

Ha, that's next for us too, watched them all before, but going to start with the last couple of episodes from S2

Lower Decks got better as it went along

 

Currently watching Spiral series 2 on BBC 4 catchup. French crime show. Very well done and fascinating to see how the French juditial system is very different to ours

 

Title annoys me a bit because it actually translales to "Gears" not Spiral

 

You can brush up on your french - it is quite fun to read the subtitles and shout " That isnt what he said" !!

You don;t have to brush up too much - I have been doing that since it started and my French was always rubbish

The Investigation - BBC Two - Excellent. Seriously excellent. Well worth a watch.

Lupin - Netflix - Really enjoying this one. It's a little like a french Sherlock, but with a master criminal who looks up to the literary character Arsene Lupin, rather than it being a modernisation like Sherlock.

Star Trek : Lower Decks - Well, I'm told the lead female gets less annoying as the series goes on, but is that because they tone her down or you just get used to her? Hmm!

More like you learn more about her as the series goes on and find out why she is like she is. I really liked Lower Decks.

Are we talking D'Vana or Beckett?

D'Vana doesn't really change all that much, but she's adorable, so it's fine.

Beckett doesn't change all that much, either, but you get a better feel for her and her past, and it makes her less of a "break rulz cuz reasons lolz" and more of a well-rounded character with actual motivations, experience and flaws.

Just finished Medical Police on Netflix. Apparently it's a spin off from "Children's Hospital" (which I've never seen). A couple of doctors are recruited to track down the bad guys who are planning on causing a global pandemic. This started airing in January last year... It's a bit like a Naked Gun style comedy (but with a lower rate of successful gags). One of those "bit early for bed, but don't want to go for a full length show" time fillers - nothing special, but watchable.

WandaVision (Disney+) maybe stretches its opening conceit for one episode too long--I don't have much personal nostalgia for those 1950s American sitcoms, y'know?--but from episode 4 on it becomes utterly compelling and gets really clever at points. One particular "recasting" is a genius piece of meta-narrative (you'll know what I mean once you see it). Well worth sticking with past that very strange opening.

It proper jumped the shark with the recasting...I was expecting Deadpool to show up too

The Gift on Netflix

 

 

A Turkish "artist" (all her art seems to be iterations of the same symbol) is drawn into an ancient mystery when a dig a Göbekli Tepe (an actual site in Anatolia) uncovers the same symbol.

 

Quite interesting, though the younger actors aren't as good as the older ones. (Or maybe I'm missing the nuances of Turkish acting). S1 ends on a Lost level cliffhanger/twist. Luckily S2 is already available.

Keep going. That is intentional.

 

I still feel it WandaVision was written to be binged but has been released episodically. I can see some people watching the first two cold, not knowing what it is about, and then not carrying on as it didn't make much sense, but if they had been all available people would have carried on out of curiosity. It is shaping into a really interesting series, though can't see how it is going to extend into more series.

I'm not sure that Marvel are going down the traditional "ongoing series" route with all their shows, which I think may be a smart idea. Too many shows get stretched out well past their natural life because people keep watching them in the hope that there might be a worthy ending (The Blacklist, anyone?) - in fact, I've seen a few trailers of late that I've thought "pass" as the concept seems fine for a film or at most a 2 or 3 ep miniseries, but not as a potentially ongoing show.

Totally agree and will be happy if Marvel do that. I do like Netflix's label of limited series, though people still clamour for more, Queen's Gambit for example. Tell a story and let that be it.

With book adaptations like Queen's Gambit, they have a built-in "stopping place", which makes it easier. I read the novel when it came out, so can't remember the end - though I remember enjoying it - and haven't got to the end of the show yet but I can't imagine it lending itself to more. Still, HBO obviously feel that more Game of Thrones is going to be a moneyspinner. (Oddly, GRRM's Wild Cards - which makes sense as an open-ended show - still has yet to make it to screen).

Got to the end of Discovery Season 2, I guess that explains how they retcon the Spore Drive (amongst other technology that I shan't elaborate on coz spoilers :))

The Klingons are becoming considerably more Klingon-y too, which cures part of my gripe from Season 1.

 

Really enjoying it now. Even if there are some reeaally outlandish things (Control.. Voq..)

However have been watching season 2 of Snowpiercer recently. Been wondering at the different ways Sean Bean could be killed off in it since his characters normally end up getting killed (apart from Sharpe)

They wrap things up nicely enough, leave plenty for season 3 and set up the "Pike and Spock have adventures on the Enterprise before Kirk shows up" spinoff which should go a long way towards pulling things together in a way that feels more like TOS.
