andyturpie Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Morning, We are losing a technician over the summer who is moving on to bigger and better things and sadly we will not be replacing him due to budget cuts. For personal use, I love team viewer for remote desktoping as I have used it for years and as my team has shrunk I believe that this would be the most convenient application for us to use in the school to keep us efficient. Just wondered who is currently using it in a school environment and how you configured it to lock it down to stop pupils accessing it or connecting and sending chat messages etc? Thanks in advance!

dry Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Just use VNC internally. User is none the wiser that it is even there, it's free and reliable. TeamViewer is overkill for anything other than connecting to the PC in your office from home imo. 1

fairm010 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I use Skeep VNC Console. Gives you a nice AD layout and you can deploy VNC and its settings easily. Its also free. I think all installers have been pulled but I may have one here somewhere. PM me if you want it. 2
andyturpie Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 Never used remote assistance but we used remote desktop connection mstsc.exe to connect to machines. The problem is it I have never managed to get VNC to work or deploy around the school (RM CC4 estate). I know that teamviewer works out the box and I did get a quote back in 2012 for V7. I can justify this spend if it helps us do our job more effectively.
localzuk Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 We have 2 systems in place that can allow remote access. 1. ABTutor - installed on ICT suite PCs, as teachers use it also 2. SCCM - allows remote control of all the clients, along with a pile of other network management tasks.

RichCowell Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 We've had Impero for several years now and love it... though it's kinda overkill if you "just" want it for remote assistance, the other features it has too are awesome, and will probably save you money currently spent on other systems... ANME members get a discount too, which always helps!
ITGURU Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I use UltraVNC - an MSI with the password embedded is deployed to new domain computers at boot up using GPO. As the firewall is enabled on all clients, In group policy I set it so that only our tech PC IPs are allowed to connect - this prevents any student/teacher who may get a portable app, connecting - not that they can run .exe files anyway. As for the remote viewing, the default password is stored in the viewer, so just enter the remote PCs name, press enter and your in, hit the ctrl, alt, delete button and log in as admin. Also have remote desktop enabled for when need to do admin work, but again locked down to only administrators.

Guest WMITTech Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 The free version of HP Classroom manager, although it's slightly locked down, it still works very well for what we want it to. Saying that though, the paid version is very expensive!! VNC is another good alternative and works very well.
medarta17 Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 SCCM works well enough, hard to complain about it, maybe a little sluggish for a remote assistance program but works none the less and is already locked down so not just anyone can use it. Being as you are with a school SCCM should be part of your Microsoft licensing agreement for free. requires a little set up if you've never installed it before. filehosting.org | Download | SQL-SCCM 2012 Installation & Configuration-Updated.pdf here is a little guide if you've never messed with it. Another good program that is WAY cheaper than teamviewer is Dameware. its a one time purchase (unless you want updated versions then you buy the updates as you want them) master installs on your machine, client on the rest, no need for lockdown as it only works from the master station.
wedemire Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 We have been using teamviewer for three or four years now. We recently upgraded from version 6 to 10. We have a team of two and three locations that we manage. Teamviewer has been a great support tool. I can take over teachers' school laptops even when they are offsite. We also use it with our servers instead of rdp so we can both connect to the same desktop at the same time. It didn't cost that much compared to other software (less than $1400 Canadian to originally purchase). We have it configured with a set password that's the same for all clients and we have the options locked so you need a password to get in there. There are no one time passwords so the only thing that shows up on the teamviewer splash screen is the id. The worst thing students could do is close teamviewer but all of our student machines are set to reboot on logoff (deepfreeze) so it will start again when that student logs off. We haven't had a problem with this though.

cpjitservices Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I actually recommend ScreenConnect over team viewer, its almost the same thing you get a web based central manegment console where you can group together machines / clients. Bonus is, you run the screen connect server. I have it running on an IIS 7 machine at one of the companies I manage. Running solid with about 15 machines. Simple install, just need either a Windows or Linux box that can run IIS or Apache, and database such as MSSQL.
liveman2 Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 I think ultraVNC is pretty decent. Free and can be customised/scripted etc. It's also been around a long time. There is also iTalc, i'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned as it's open source and free: iTALC
