I've got to the stage where I label all interconnects at both ends at home - makes life much easier if you need to make changes.

 

It'll add to the cost, but Silverstone do some cases that are designed to blend in more with home entertainment gear if you go for the "build your own" idea.

i live alone and dont care about the mess as the monitor/dreamcast/snes are all temporary (the monitor less so i keep finding uses for it) so i cba tidying them away to unplug in a few weeks time lol. and if you think thats bad you ought to see the rats nest of cables down the back lol

well out of curiosity last night started speccing up a pc rig and got to 1k with just board/chip(and as i was being lazy and just using ccl it was an i3 as thats the only 8 series they had)/ram and a 1080 ok i dont need an ssd as i have 1 512gb evo 850 sat in my old laptop doing nothing (and worse case a crucial 750 i can rob from my xbox one)but still need at least a psu and a case and unless i yank a really old drive from my microserver/last pc a data drive and an osso thats another £2-300 hmm i dont see it happening lol

An i3 and a 1080? That's going to CPU throttle a lot! You'll need at least an i5 for a 1080 or you know.... *cough cough* Ryzen

you cant add stuff they dont have in stock to the basket so as the only gen 8 cpu in stock i chucked it in just to get a result i was actually thinking i5 i7 seems overkill i9 for lottery winners lol. Not going back to amd been there before and their chipsets sucked and tbh last time i looked it wasnt that much cheaper (last amd machine iremember using was a laptop and it took over an hour to install office 2013 from its own hdd (copied from a pen drive)

I'd say drop down to a 1060 if you're on a budget.

We're running a 980ti with an i5 and 16GB RAM and it's more than adequate for us. We're console peasants so don't care for 60fps at 4k. Have a look out for second hand cards, you can save a bundle. Ours was used, but from a gamer friend, so you knew if would be ok.

Personally, i can't see why anyone would buy an Intel chip over a Ryzen chip at the moment (Obviously if you want integrated graphics you can't go with ryzen), Better value for money overall! And even at the top end Threadripper is raining champ for money/performance.

 

I've had 0 problems with my Ryzen 1800x, and people who did originally say there were problems, say it's now fine after a few patchs in the early months.

I'd say drop down to a 1060 if you're on a budget.

 

Agree with this also, if you have a low budget you don't want to splash most of your wad (oooo errrr) on just one part. Plus a 1060 will be less throttled with a i3

I'd be looking at 7th Gen i5 or comparible Ryzen and a 1060 if your on a budget. 8Gb Ram can start you off, and you can always get another 8Gb in a few months.

 

That said I'm still rocking a 2nd Gen i5 with a GTX 1070 and get smooth 60fps all day long but will get round to a 8th Gen CPU at some point

That's what I'm using and it does 1440p 144Hz with no problems at all.

Yeah, but awful cooling so it's a 1070 that's constantly thermal throttled

1070's are still pretty good, but it's the extra cost. All depends on your budget.

it was as much an exercise in im bored lets do something than a serious plan i wondered what i could get. May as well at this point if i was going to do it (i think ill just update to an xbox 1 x tbh for now)

 

i diddnt plan to have an i3 like i said it was just the only 8th gen ccl had in stock when i was adding parts so thats all i could use to get anything approaching a simple/quick result if i built it it would be an i5 at least

cooling on my laptop isnt actually that bad after an hour or so playing ghost recon wildlands it was still running same fps as at the start

 

as for screens its going to be what i have now so tv or a 24"asus screen thats probably 5 years old or costs were just going to go silly so diddnt even look

CCL are limited on 8th Gen stock atm as they are waiting for more to arrive from the US before they update their site and their pre-built product range.

These days I recommend 12GB RAM for budget-y builds. 8 just sometimes isn't enough. People complain about unmatched pairs but if you do 2x4 and 2x2 it's fine, and motherboards are smart enough to work with that without causing any problems (just make sure they're the same clock speed!)

Also if you want to save cash don't buy RAM with LED's on it That's a premium.

for good reasons its awful the less lights the better i dont get why anyone wants to light up a pcs internals theres nowt in there worth looking at ad tbh rgb reminds me of this stuff

 

 

and i will admit to once for 10 mins having a blue neon under my car (i parked next to my desk literally and had for some reason a 12v neon light so i shoved it under my car on boxes just for a laugh)

When you have a custom water cooling loop that looks lit AF you want mucho RGB to light the baby up!

 

Along with.. .rgb keyboard, rgb headset, rgb mouse, rgb mouse mat and most importantly... rgb coaster

Because it lights up all my hard work it took to build, plus the pipes look sweet as well with orange coolant, i probably looks at my tower more than i look at my monitor!

I think it's mostly because of the care and dedication that goes into building and maintaining a gaming PC. It takes time. It takes effort. It's not just 'a tool' that doesn't need to look good. A custom-built PC can be a reflection of personality. That might sound a little bit poncey but let me ask: How do you decide what furniture to buy? It's the same sort of thing. Unless you're locking it away in a cupboard never to see the light of day, then it's going to be out. And if it's going to be out, and it's going to always be visible, you might a well give it a bit of visual flair. Better a lit-up box than one of those dull beige cases we all used back in the early 2000's, right?
