Do you provide teaching staff with their own laptop, or, do they have a computer in their classroom, or both? Or something else? Be helpful to know what sort of school you work in, and what age ranges are taught too.

ButterflyMoon Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Every Teaching class has a PC plus all the teachers have an iPad and Apple telly in the rooms. Very few have laptops as most of our laptop stock is now very old and most unusable nowadays. We also have Google docs and all reports are done on sims.

mrbios Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 PC in every classroom, about 60% of teachers have a laptop, many of the others decide they don't need one or have their own personal one already. Staff laptops are setup for offline files + soon direct access as well, there's also HAP with access to files, sims and sims discover remotely also via HAP. This is in a fairly big secondary with a sixth form

PC in classrooms with whiteboards/projectors attached [some exceptions here] Laptop/Surface: Teachers who work a given proportion of full time, I think it is about 0.6 or higher, get a choice of laptop or Surface. Each teacher gets their own laptop which is also assigned to a room and must remain in that room during the school day to ease cover and itinerant teachers. I have suggested a move to fixed desktop PC's but SLT believe if they expect staff to do some lesson planing at home then they can't expect them to use personal equipment so we are sticking with laptops for the forseeable future. I'm currently looking in to Win8.1 tablet hybrids for PE staff as part of the next refresh. Part time staff get 5-year old hand me downs from full time staff. Every classroom has a projector and all but about 4 have interactive whiteboards. All but 3 IWBs are Smart boards, the other three are Promethean. I'm currently researching a development plan to switch to Clevertouch LCDs over the next 7-8 years.
localzuk Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Laptops for all teachers here, with a couple of rooms having desktop PCs as well (due to the way they're timetabled). Some teachers have iPads as a kind of pilot program for them, with a possible full roll-out next year to all teachers. 600 pupil middle school.

clockend25 Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 All teachers and TAs are issued laptops, and we have a VPN setup for remote access. In terms of the teaching rooms almost all have Casio LED projectors and most now have Promethean IWBs.
Disease Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 120 Staff 900 pupil secondary school. Staff do not get laptops, we provide a desktop, projector and Smart IWB in every classroom. We use Frog Secure Gateway, to allow access to the network from home. We used to provide Laptops to staff but that has been phased out as staff leave and machines fail.

However there is a bank of laptops they and book out for a certain amount of days. there is also a 'Hot Desk' which staff can use at any time its free. Each classroom is fitted with IWB, laptop and projector Junior School Y3-Y6 All staff except cleaners have a laptop, The caretaker has a tablet. Each classroom has an IWB and Projector. Each member of staff has to use their laptop in classrooms while teaching. School YR - Y6 mixed year groups Computer, IWb and projector in each room, classrooms teachers have Ipads. a few staff have laptops. Staff room has three computers staff can use.

All teaching staff get laptops, specialist rooms (music, science, food) have permanent PCs in them. We have 3 mobile netbook suites, 1 tablet suite, and a 35 head ICT suite using multipoint (which is crap btw). All teaching rooms have full projection, sound and whiteboard facilities. Hall, staff room, SLT and admin offices all have fixed PCs. External access is provided by either RDP or DirectAccess.

We're a private prep school, ages 4-13, 400 pupils, around 150 staff. Currently, each classroom has a desktop PC connected up to a Smartboard at the front of the classroom. Most desktops now have proper dual-output graphics cards, so the teacher can have one thing open on their screen and something else on the IWB. However, after looking at this year's crop of all-ine-one touch-screen interactive LED displays at this year's BETT show, I'm thinking that this summer's upgrade is going to be to put an LED touch screen in the reception classrooms - an all-in-one self-contained computer device that can also be used as an interactive table. We would then need to provide the teacher with a separate computer of some kind, probably a laptop, but more for the lack of cables rather than from any expectation they will carry it around or take it home.
soveryapt Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Good thread and interesting to see what the current trends are. My schools vary. I have a couple of primary schools that still go through the process of buying staff new laptops every 3-5 years, but then also have at least 1 classroom PC per room (some have additional ones depending on the year groups and size of school). One of my schools bought teachers and HLTAs new laptops about 3 years ago and said that they were the last they were buying for them, which now means I struggle to get staff to bring them in for updates and such, but hey ho, if they stop working then it's their fault. However, this school is now entertaining the idea of whether they give staff iPads as we're on O365 so they could make use of them quite well really, so I'm investigating leasing options for them to reduce (well, spread out) that upfront cost. Does anyone have any dealings with iPad leasing for staff? Companies you think are great, any you think I should REALLY avoid. I think all my schools now have IWB and Projectors (of differing ages / models) in each room, but each site at least is 1 brand of board (so no mix of Promethean and SMART on the same site which makes things a bit simpler). The only differing touch screens are a couple of plasma trollies we have in a couple of lower ability classes at one school. My own personal view is that if you're going to give staff a laptop then they should be bringing that with them each day and it should be their main computer for use in the classroom too through use of a docking station, and any member of staff expected to teach too (HLTAs for example). I would be interested to know if anyone adopts this approach, and if so, how you cope if a member of staff is off ill - do you have a couple of spare laptops that cab be rolled out for instance? Would just seem to make a little more sense to me.
MrsSav Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 One form entry primary school. All teachers have laptop and iPad. Roughly 5 iPads per classroom, pc and Clevertouch or Smartboard, visualiser and camera/s for each classroom too. Also access to an iMac and 2 study centre research/SEN pcs.
