burnsyb0y Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Hi Guys and Gals, Was just wondering what everyone does to keep boredom away and look busy when you have done all your jobs and have nothing to do? So far I have rearranged the entire office and repographics room, cleaned up the network drives and AD and made sure everything is up to date. So now I am just twiddling my thumbs and trying not to get caught on techcrunch-like sites by tabbing to a -t cmd box

Particularly things like those from sophos about stuxnet etc. They are sometimes hundreds of pages long, actually pretty interesting, and suitably technical that if someone comes in you don't look like you're just shopping! 1

Hid in the server room the other day (with the lights off and curtains closed) to get stuck in to an issue with the SIMS server. Was still found and given a directive to show a MOS how to print photos taken on a digital camera....

Especially if the head doesn't see IT as a priority! I don't stop until I start here and go home at 4, even then I can be doing work from home or thinking about things at home for work the next day. Is there not projects you could be thinking about, upgrading your machines, server. New software implementations, Network diagram, setup an ICT club etc....?

You'll probably get more things to do this way then watching your helpdesk/manning your phone!

What I'm trying to say is his job could be insecure due to the points I raised earlier so he might want to start looking elsewhere. Just a suggestion mind. 1

Power goes down, server is hooked up to UPS And I do the a partial network check manually, checking all accounts hard peripherals, VM server etc.... My job book has been signed of completely. Any other suggestions welcome
JRowley Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Documentation is how I fill my time if I have some spare, though ultimately this is just another job that happens to be one that can be put aside when other jobs come in. Running out of jobs really isn't a thing in my view, you should always be able to find something to do even if it's just research! 1
