LosOjos Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Sin City 2. I loved Sin City 1 and wasn't expecting the sequel to have such an impact but it was really good. Only bit I didn't like was that the ending to Johnny's story didn't really make sense to me? That's on Netflix now, was going to skip it but may give it a watch now. Last movie I watched: Mad Max Fury Road. Really enjoyed it, but I love over the top 80s action movies. It's very much that. [except the 80s bit, though it could easily have been]

I didn't notice it really, in a completely unrelated point I have recently brought 3 Mercedes' Kingsman: The Secret Service... utterly, utterly brilliant. Best film I've seen since Wolf of Wall Street. I do think we're past Peak Samuel L Jackson now, though. He's gotten to the point where he's just playing himself in films. Didn't really like it myself but I'm not replying because of that... SLJ, when did he become a grumpy old racist with a chip on his shoulder? Die Hard 3 being the example that pops into my head first. Loved him in Pulp Fiction.
sparkeh Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Kingsman: The Secret Service... utterly, utterly brilliant. Best film I've seen since Wolf of Wall Street. It is quite literally James Bond as done by the Kick-Ass team - both director and graphic novelist. The direction of the action sequences is different - a lot of speeding up and slowing down, like 300 but not taken to such ludicrous extremes - but it works really well and helps you keep track of what's happening. Funny, fantastically casted & acted, action packed, interesting. Loved it. I do think we're past Peak Samuel L Jackson now, though. He's gotten to the point where he's just playing himself in films. Watched this the other night. Enjoyed it lots but two things tainted it a little bit for me: The bit with Eggsy and the princess was just cheap and not in keeping with the rest of film. All us looked at each other and went "Erm.... that was weird". Samuel L Jackson's weird lispy delivery. Didn't work at all. Other than that it was great

It's novel in parts but the plot is wafer thin and the ending was a bit predictable so wouldn't recommend it overall. Trying to decide whether to go and see Terminator Genisys tomorrow? Initial reviews look a bit mixed with some saying it's great and others the worst one yet....

The trailer appears to have given away a major plot twist and probably the most spectacular stunt (the bus flip). Considering waiting until it's on Sky Movies.

Dark City was a bit weird, I'd expected a sort of world within a world plot with some sort of ruling group but it was interesting to see play out. Constantine was good as usual and reminds me I need to watch the TV series at some point.
flyinghaggis Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 (edited) Saw terminator genisys earlier today. Have to say I really enjoyed it despite the negative reviews by some critics! It's pretty dumb and you have to basically ignore the plot as the whole time travelling thing is bordering on the ridiculous along with some of Arnie's quips. In fact it has as much comedy as action and is chock full of in-jokes and spends plenty of time poking fun at the previous moves. Still, grab some popcorn, don't think too hard about it and I reckon you'll enjoy the ride if you're a fan of the franchise in fact if anything it possibly plays slightly too hard on the nostalgia card and anyone not familiar with the series will struggle to follow what's going on. Arnie's still awesome and it's not a terminator movie without him IMO. Emilia Clarke is also surprisingly good as Sarah Connor! Edited July 3, 2015 by flyinghaggis

It was like they sat down and thought "right, here's the plot for a disaster movie and here's a rejected script for one of the Taken films" $$$$$ Dwayne Johnson is the new Kevin Bacon.

Saw Taken 2 last night. Not as bad as I had read... I actually quite enjoyed it. Is that wrong? No. But Taken 3 is a bit lacking I saw "What We Do In The Shadows". Was OK, but can't see why people are raving about it.

LeMarchand Posted July 10, 2015 Author Posted July 10, 2015 Oculus Karen Gillan is determined to prove that an evil, perception-warping mirror was responsible for the tragedy that befell her family a decade ago. A sunny summer night (with a break to fetch the missus from the station) was probably not the best time to watch this, but I was thoroughly enjoying it... until the end. The film does such a good job of making you wonder what's real that the end comes as an abrupt surprise. Plus, KG needs to extend her range. If it wasn't for "Guardians" I'd be doubting her acting chops.

unixman_again Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Terminator Genisys. I thought it was OK but not as good as Terminator Salvation. It completely messes up the time line of the series. Of course, it could be an alternative time line in the a similar manner to the Sarah Connor Chronicles. The main problem with it is the complete miscasting of Emilia Clarke; she couldn't handle the recoil from a water pistol let alone the various weapons. Also, she's not much of an actress.
