ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 5, 2015 Posted June 5, 2015 Saw Mad Max: Fury road last night. It's a stunning film, even if it is basically one long chase sequence and lacking in plot at times. It's exactly what I expect of the franchise and a very welcome return!

The end credits feature cards with additional missions/covers/weapons which will keep you amused until a post-credits outtake. The Bond team should consult so that maybe Spectre has a decent theme (unlike the tuneless bobbins of Quantum or the Skyfall theme, which seemed to have been created by a computer that had been fed in all the existing Bond themes). Also saw the much-mentioned Kung Fury when we got home. Amusing, but I preferred the similar Danger 5 TV series. By a weird coincidence both the above feature a scene in which a blond guy is ridiculed to tears... played by the same actor!

I do quite a lot of research on the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin and was surprised to find that Colour Sgt Bourne was there too, with an honorary commission at the Musketry School in Dollymount.

LeMarchand Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Not sure if this counts as a "movie" as it's more an "episode" in a series of TV films that follows a series, but I saw "Signed, Sealed, Delivered: From Paris With Love" at the weekend. Only of interest if you've seen and enjoyed the preceding series/films, but it went down well at Château LeMarchand (though not enough emphasis was placed on "case"). Quite amusing to see the efforts to disguise the fact that guest star Poppy Montgomery was heavily pregnant at the time of filming.

Still, kudos to the marketing team: I haven't seen the cinema so full for years. I know that there wouldn't be a film otherwise, but I do find the idea of actually opening the park and then deciding to create gene-spliced super-dinos a bit far fetched. They know damn well what has happened before! Plus I was hoping the Justin Beiber kid was going to be munched from his first scene. What an annoying, self-centred little brat! (I also couldn't fathom why he seemed to be catnip for teenage girls). At least he eventually stepped up to the plate.
LiamH Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Ill white out this bit underneath for spoilers.. -- The older kid annoyed me, had a super clingy girlfriend at home and was a pervy hound dog for the first half of the movie, I wanted him to get eaten! the whole family dynamic seemed forced, that whole scene with the "mum and dad are getting a divorce" which was never touched on again... JP3 did that better and that's saying something! It would have been much cooler to cut out all that forced family stuff and show some flashbacks to Owen bonding with the infant raptors, the only family worth getting to know in this film! -- I enjoyed the film, and it was always going to be a hard sell to me being such a huge fan of the original's.
Dos_Box Posted June 20, 2015 Posted June 20, 2015 Just saw JW this morning. Thankfully I hadn't read the write-ups here! It was a bit of a disappointment tbh. Far too much running and screaming, very flat characters and almost zero 'wow' factor. I did like that they nodded to the orginal quite a bit and didn't try to bury it, but in the end I was just waiting for the film to end. Oh, and just how much product placement was there?!!!!

Also watched Kung Fu Dunk on Netflix with a few friends. It's one of those films that works best when watched with friends and probably a few beers, doesn't take itself seriously and was very watchable for the sheer wtf factor that kept popping up.

sonofsanta Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Kingsman: The Secret Service... utterly, utterly brilliant. Best film I've seen since Wolf of Wall Street. It is quite literally James Bond as done by the Kick-Ass team - both director and graphic novelist. The direction of the action sequences is different - a lot of speeding up and slowing down, like 300 but not taken to such ludicrous extremes - but it works really well and helps you keep track of what's happening. Funny, fantastically casted & acted, action packed, interesting. Loved it. I do think we're past Peak Samuel L Jackson now, though. He's gotten to the point where he's just playing himself in films.

A DVD to buy your SMT, perhaps. 2

sparkeh Posted June 25, 2015 Posted June 25, 2015 Sin City 2. I loved Sin City 1 and wasn't expecting the sequel to have such an impact but it was really good. Only bit I didn't like was that the ending to Johnny's story didn't really make sense to me?
