The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

 

A young woman discovers she is a "Shadowhunter" - a race of demon hunters and is thrust into an underworld she never suspected existed.

 

Not sure why this did so badly a the box office (unless the Yanks realised nearly the entire cast was British). Its not brilliant, but would have liked to see how the story played out. The TV show looks like it's concentrating more on the "hot young people in tight clothes" angle, so don't really want to invest time in that. May just Wiki the plot of the next 2 books.

 

I'm concerned about the way all such stories have to have the main girl have an uncool but dependable suitor and a cool but dangerous one. If there was ever a chance that she'd pick the former it might be more interesting. (Even her Mum has something similar going on). There is also a strange plot device that prevents the two main characters from carrying on their relationship (apparently this plays out differently in the books) that makes you wonder what teenage girls are into.

 

Still, Aidan Turner: Vampire, Dwarf, and now Werewolf. Is there nothing this man can't play?

Watched the last hour and a bit of "Olympus has fallen" last night. I did think it was ridiculous that the Americans didn't just say "kill the president if you like, we're leaving our boats where they are". And also a self destruct on a nuke doesn't detonate the nuke does it, so what were they panicking about with "Cerberus"? I was quite looking forward to seeing London has fallen, but that put me off a bit.

Watched Jurassic World at the weekend. Not awful and enjoyable enough but I think I preferred Jurassic Parks 1 and 3. They didn't make me like any of the characters enough to make we want any of them to survive and the ending was a bit/very poor considering the film had been better than ok up until that point.

 

My husband commented at roughly the halfway point that the film he would like to see made would be Alien vs. Predator vs. Jurassic Park/World but the dinosaurs would have to be able to shoot lasers from their eyes to make it fair. I think his diet might be affecting his mind

Watched a preview of London has Fallen on Tuesday night. Was really good but a bit unnerving having security sat in amongst everyone. They insisted on a social media ban also!!

I was quite looking forward to seeing London has fallen, but that put me off a bit.

 

I enjoyed the first enough to plan to see the second next week. Loved the "Let's play a game of **** Off. You go first." line.

Going to put Spy on tonight, seen very good reviews for it, which seems to be quite rare for a comedy type film whenever I look them up

I caught up with The Big Short and Bridge of Spies at the cinema this week (they had a week of Oscar re-runs)

Thoroughly enjoyed them both. The Big Short had some delightful black humour and was very engaging.

Bridge of Spies was excellent, but one or two scenes were just a big too Spielbergy for my taste.

Fast & Furious 7. The Mrs likes the whole franchise, unfortunately.

At the end where Paul Walker's Mrs is pregnant enough to have had a scan to determine boy/girl, my wife points out that she has no bump and declares that's what made the film unrealistic.

LOL! We only started watching them when they started to get really silly (#5). Neither of us are petrolheads, so had avoided them up until then. Have since gone back and watched (and enjoyed) them all. Would consider the 1-7 box set when it drops to <£20.

TV movie sequel about a team of "postal detectives". This was their "Valentine's Day" special. Sweet if you like the rest, but probably too saccharin for most here.

The trailer totally ruined a major twist and the time travel elements didn't make sense to me, otherwise not as awful as I'd expected - but far from brilliant.

What could have been a tolerably entertaining dumb action movie is scuppered by both dodgy politics (it's OK to blow up a load of non-combatants at a wedding to take out one bad guy) and the sheer ridiculousness of the plot. How the heck did the terrorists plan for certain dignitaries being stuck in traffic or deciding to be "fashionably late" or seemingly deciding to stand outside Bucks Palace rather than go to the v. important state funeral? Not to mention the idea that every single branch of the UK's arm forces/emergency services (except the SAS, obvs) could be infiltrated by multiple terrorists. I could go on, but just don't waste your money.

The Assassin Nie yin niang Which has to be the slowest martial arts film ever. If you seen the trailer, it looks in the ilk of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but this is more Slouching Tiger, Sleepy Dragon. Endless shots of stunning scenery. It's 105 minutes long and the story, what little there is of it, could be dealt with in a third of the time. It's won several awards too - perhaps the judging panels wanted a little nap.

Escape Plan

 

Sylvester Stallone stars as a security expert hired to test a top secret prison by breaking out of it. It's all a set up and, together with fellow inmate Arnie, he must find a way to escape with no outside help. Tolerable B movie fare. If you had been considering this but not got around to watching it it's a reasonable time filler.

Watched The Witch (actually went to a cinema) on Friday evening.

I was expecting some sort of horror film based on my husband's vague description of what I was going to see which consisted of:

Nothing happens in the trailer - it must be good!

It looks scary

 

What I actually got was about 90 minutes of some superstitious people living on a farm and 5 minutes of naked women.

If you would like to picture a Downton Abbey halloween special where the film is the recreation of a "ghost story" told by the under staff then you will pretty much have the whole film (and accents) in your mind.

It is about as scary and interesting as that sounds unless, of course, you like watching period television (and it really feels like a television episode stretched to fill an hour and half) where nothing happens to the characters that you could give a sh*t about but you do appreciate the effort taken to make it look like they are in that time.

It is also encapsulated quite well by the phrase "is that it?" which was spoken a couple of times when the end credits appeared - the language used by one person was slightly more colourful.

 

On the other hand the acting was faultless, the recreation of 17th century America is very well done (although, to my knowledge, having not lived in 17th century america I'm not an authority) and the direction is superb but it would work better as an A-level Film Studies example rather than as a piece of entertainment.
