Be sure though to report back any faults, comments or opinions via the communication channels that you have as I/We review this on a weekly basis and will ensure that we do everything we possibly can to give you an OS that you want (of course we can't please everyone!) ;-) I'm glad you like what you are seeing so far! :-) Thanks! At the moment we have a vbs script that runs at login which queries the DCs and then reports to the user in 14 days their password is about to change. The trouble is the box is just like any other information box, users don't read it and then complain. Also, when do we expect to see the new previews.

Yeah, definitely the way to go. After being used to IOS/Android/OSX I think we've come to expect free OS version upgrades for a couple of years after buying a product. It's probably in MS's interest anyway to get all it's customers onto the latest version with the included app store and start generating revenue! Seems to be the way things are going rather than trying to sell OS updates which I suspect the majority of it's customer base never bought except with new hardware anyway.
sonofsanta Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 There'd been rumours of a free upgrade for Win8 owners - one of my techs bought a copy of Win8 cheap on that basis - but I'm pleasantly surprised at the Win7 owners as well. They've got me on board, I'll be taking that offer up By limiting it to a year to encourage the upgrade, it's a great way of getting those adoption figures up fast and hitting a critical mass for developers - something that always crippled Win8. No more Internet Explorer either - I wonder if they'll keep the name Spartan for the browser, to tie in with Cortana... (and how long before Windows Media Player is rebranded Warthog? )

JRowley Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 We are still on Windows 7 as 8/8.1 really didn't seem suitable for the workplace. So we will be looking to move to Windows 10, either summer 2016 (brave) or summer 2017 (safe). Just need to see how it settles down in its first 6 months really.

That said, it shouldn't be as much of an issue to do such a roll-out - it isn't completely different to Windows 7, so user retraining should be minimal. Gotta make sure the server infrastructure is as stable and reliable as it needs to be before rolling it out. Might even do the upgrade at the same time we next upgrade our server hardware. At home, more than likely straight after launch to be honest!

The moment it becomes available on MSVL i'll be downloading it and doing everything i need to do to extensively test it for our environment Windows 7 took me from October to May to get that bit done, wouldn't deploy even to testing till i was 100% satisfied. Followed by two months of testing in our Library on 10 PCs. I'll probably go about it a similar way this time, except VMware workstation is going to make my life so much easier than my windows 7 testing was lol So long as all our software works and any software with support agreements cover it we'll be going for it. Gotta make sure the server infrastructure is as stable and reliable as it needs to be before rolling it out. Might even do the upgrade at the same time we next upgrade our server hardware. They mentioned making deployment easier in windows 10 last night, but never went into it in any detail. That's about the only bit I'm really looking forward to...the next SCCM! I wonder if you can request it in disk form to do a straight format rather than upgrade via the internet. I have been playing around with the preview on a laptop and I quite like it.. One of the first things I will be doing is trying to disable Cortana or as much as I can but leaving the search of the computer function. Not really a fan. At home - day 1. At work - when's Windows 7 EoL? For me Windows 7 is the new XP... Could be Windows 11 or 12 before we make the next jump. (That said Win 8.1 tablets are starting to creep in...)
sonofsanta Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 (edited) At home: end of this year when I build a new machine with an Intel 6000 series i5 (Skylake) and a PCI-E NVMe SSD At work: maybe Summer 2016, when the servers are due their refresh and will be updated to Server 2015 or w/e it'll be called. I know you can manage newer versions of Windows without needing the server OS in lockstep, but it does make it easier. I'll upgrade all our servers in advance of that. The big blocker for us otherwise will be capita/SIMS. Admit, I was a little underwhelmed yesterday. I came to watch a Windows 10 event, not an hour of a massive TV & some holographic stuff that'll be nothing like the demo. Edited January 22, 2015 by DrCheese
