localzuk Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Wish they would go back to how it was with NT 4 / Windows 2000 and have Workstation / Pro and Server, thats its. No need for all this Basic, Home, Home Premium, Pro, Enterprise, Ultimate crap. They did (pretty much), with Windows 8. The only editions were 8/8 Pro/8 Enterprise and Server(in its 2 flavours - Standard and Data Centre) (I'm not including RT, as that was an abberation).. Its the split between Pro and Enterprise that doesn't make much sense still.
Norphy Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Wish they would go back to how it was with NT 4 / Windows 2000 and have Workstation / Pro and Server, thats its. No need for all this Basic, Home, Home Premium, Pro, Enterprise, Ultimate crap. They mostly did that with Windows 8. There is just a standard, Pro and Enterprise version (plus the legally mandated K/N variants). It's understandable really, the vast majority of people don't need all of the features in Pro or Enterprise so just having them there increases the support burden for them. I do think that having Enterprise and Pro is a waste of time though, the difference between the two is pretty minimal.
tmcd35 Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Its the split between Pro and Enterprise that doesn't make much sense still. Isn't Enterprise the Software Assurance edition that adds in BitLocker and a couple of other SA benefits?
Norphy Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Yes. Why not put those features in Pro? Not doing that makes Enterprise nothing but a cynical marketing ploy to sell SA to people who wouldn't want it otherwise.
tmcd35 Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Windows + enabling/disabling "feature packs". They could even sell some feature packs as extra, or make them available only to enterprise etc... I noticed 8.1 allows you to purchase additional windows feature packs. I pushed the button on mums laptop and apparently the ability to purchase additional features online isn't available in the UK (was just curious to see what those extra features were). - - - Updated - - - Yes. Why not put those features in Pro? Not doing that makes Enterprise nothing but a cynical marketing ploy to sell SA to people who wouldn't want it otherwise. Erm, I think that's exactly the point - to get people to buy into SA...
sparkeh Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Is there any word on release date for next version of SCCM? Literally about to start our migration from 2007 -> 2012 today, is it worth going ahead or waiting I wonder?
hardtailstar Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 I like the look of it, may download it and play with it!
localzuk Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Isn't Enterprise the Software Assurance edition that adds in BitLocker and a couple of other SA benefits? Kind of. Bitlocker was only available to Enterprise editions in Win 7, but is in Pro and Ent editions of 8/8.1 My point is - why does it require different "editions"? Why not just produce "Windows" and then have those things you want to limit to certain customers as "features" enabled in some way or other. SA features could still be SA features, but they wouldn't require some special edition of Windows.
sted Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) Another new Windows 10 video. This one shows what happens when you connect and disconnect a keyboard on hybrid devices like the Surface Pro 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=F_O-LrGL-YQ why on earth in tablet mode would you want/need the start bar at the bottom of the screen? so far generally looks good and some of the cmd improvements look cool but then i like metro anyway and personally think the return of the start menu is a bit of a backwards step and i like the fact metro apps run on their own screen so actually it really does look in some weays a backwards step to me Edited October 1, 2014 by sted
zag Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) Very underwhelming on the new feature front. Nice to see they fixed some stuff from windows 8 though that everyone was moaning about. Universal apps are going to be a big feature and may actually mean publishers get into it a bit more. What do the people who were such supporters of metro think now Microsoft have effectively removed it from full screen? Edited October 1, 2014 by zag
localzuk Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 why on earth in tablet mode would you want/need the start bar at the bottom of the screen? To easily switch between open apps? Its actually one thing that I hate about tablet devices - I don't want to have to do a multiple motion action to change between apps - I just want to tap and go.

There is only the media center pack available, chances are you already have it? Regarding Windows 10 I think in general it looks good, though it's the same as Windows 7 in some sense, it's everything Windows 8 should have been in the first place, little refinements to the design. My big hope is that they fix alot of the issues with it being used in the work place, like ditching the requirement for a Microsoft Account, or altering it to accept an Office 365 account or simply a domain connected account. That requirement in Windows 8 has never made sense in the work place. Edited October 1, 2014 by JRowley

Its actually one thing that I hate about tablet devices - I don't want to have to do a multiple motion action to change between apps - I just want to tap and go. but in tablet mode its wasted screen space where swipe from the left shows you your running stuff i just dont see the need to waste the screen real estate or remove apps from running on their own dedicated screen

I think it's just a relic of the pre-download era of the late 90's early 00's were it was about shelf presence in stores like PC-World. It wouldn't surprise me to see a Home/Pro split and that's it in 10, as I said 8.1 already includes the ability to pay for additional features so they must be thinking that way. Also, doesn't most Windows 7/8 install discs include all feature anyway and it's the activation code that determines whether its pro/home/enterprise/whatever? I thought they stopped specific discs for specific editions some time ago. Edited October 1, 2014 by tmcd35

I'd also expect the migration path from 2012 R2 to the next version to be less arduous than going from 2007 to 2012. 1

I'd go with 2012 too and wait for a few update rollups of SCCM as there will be a few bugs.
zag Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 From what I heard at a recent Microsoft demo, they are pushing Windows intune much more and cloud MDM solutions rather than the traditional active directory and system manager routes. Will have to wait and see I guess.

Last quote I had for it was for between £35k and £62k per year for our 550 pupil school... EDIT: One thing I've noticed with Microsoft is that they seem to be unable to realise that user choice is a good thing. Why not make more of the UI options customisable, rather than how Microsoft think you want it to be like? Edited October 1, 2014 by localzuk

Microsoft should make InTune free for education (or at least free with EES) in order to compete with Google.

pooley Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Why have they gone straight to Windows 10? Because Windows 7 8 9. 4
localzuk Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Can you not just buy licenses outright and not pay a yearly running cost? Its a cloud based service, so subscription only.
